Prince Everrett sighed as he looked out at the gardens. "He's never gonna like me."
Damien, the prince's best friend, scoffed. "Of course he will, Rhett. Everyone loves you. Even my old aunt Wilhelmina likes you, and she doesn't like anybody."
Rhett frowned, a little confused. "But you just said she likes me. Therefore, she does like somebody."
Damien rolled his eyes in consternation. "Not the point, Rhett. If you're that worried about him liking you, use an anonymous masquerade ball as a reason to get to know him."
Everrett surprised Damien by actually thinking about the idea. "That's actually not a bad idea. Well invite everyone in the kingdom, that I may show my love to him! Thanks, Ian for the idea!"
Several months later:
Sam sighed as he fixed his tie for the seventh time.
Adrian shook his head. "Think you tie is this right this time? Dude, it's just a masquerade dance! No big deal!"
Sam scoffed. "No big deal? The prince might be there!" He then underwent a multitude of emotions, finally settling on joy. "Oh my God, the prince will be there! I can see it now, yes I can see how, the way we'll first meet! His golden hair, so strong and fair, he is, he's such a treat! We'll fall in love, and dance together for hours and hours and hours! And then he'll send me tons and tons of beautiful flowers! And we'll live happily ever after on a little golden lake, far from the ones who would claim him! And-"
"Sorry to interrupt you're little song," Damien said, not looking very sorry, "but we have places to be."
And so it was that Sam came to the masquerade dressed as a black panther, and the prince arrived as a golden snake. Immediately the two found each other. And they danced and they danced, and they danced some more. Then they heard the forbidding sound of the midnight chime, as a blue portal appeared in front of them, sucking them both in.
When they regained conscious, they realized they were stuck in a strange new place, full of flying creatures, new sights, sounds, and smells of all kinds. And, surprise, surprise, a house on a little golden lake. There the two lived for many a year, friends, lovers, husbands. Oh, and don't worry, there was some clothing colored after their masquerade suits in the house. Then, one day, a fairy arrived bearing a gift. A box that said in big bold capital letters: RETURN TO SENDER. As soon as Everrett opened it, a purple portal opened, sucking them both in - and spitting them back out exactly where the whole adventure through that alternate land had started. He gardens.
A month later:
"I now pronounce you prince and husband! You may kiss the groom!" The priest proclaimed, to the joy of everyone. (This priest had a habit of being rather long-winded, and this joy was mainly out of the end of his nearly four-hour monologue.
Later that day in the prince's personal suite:
"I love you, Everett," said Sam.
"I love you more," responded Everrett.
"Shut up and kiss me," sighed Sam.
And Everrett, for he first time, followed and order. He shut up and kissed Sam.

Happy ever after right? Well, no. There's more to their story, and if you want me to write it, then comment so on this entry. Doing so would also mean expanding on this story to include more detail, and more story than this very CliffsNotes version of the tale.
