Gunshots filled the air, along with the sound of birds flapping and an almost inhuman scream. Lucy Gray watched on silently, hidden in the trees. Coriolanus fell to his knees, the gun finally running out of bullets. She looked down at him, unseen. Taking a shaky breath, Lucy Gray waited, watching the boy she thought she loved get to his feet, stumbling through the forest.
He's delirious, she thinks to herself, the snake isn't poisonous, but the pain will get to him. Yes, delirium. That was why he was acting like this. Lucy Gray tried to reassure herself, though in the back of her mind she wondered if this was the real Coriolanus Snow. Snow, who had seemed like such a nice guy, offering her roses and cheating for her to win the games. But that game was one he had fought, as well.
He's a killer, Lucy Gray tried to tell herself, he doesn't care about me. But try as she might, one thought kept ringing in her head: I'm a killer, too. But she had killed to protect herself, to keep herself safe in the arena. Snow killed for power, for gain, for greed. She was not like him.
Hours passed, as Lucy Gray sat in that tree. She told herself that he would come back, that he would bring a whole squad of peacekeepers to hunt her down...unless he already thought she was dead. He had shot at her, but none of Coriolanus' bullets had made contact. Lucy Gray was unscathed. But Snow didn't know that.
Finally building up the courage, she climbed down the tree, silently making her way through the woods. Her breathing was shaky, her body buzzing with fear. Even though he'd left hours ago, Lucy Gray could still feel his anger, could still hear his screams.
Stumbling through the woods, Lucy Gray thought. She had to run away, had to get as far away from here as possible. She was going to set out on the journey she had intended from the beginning.
