The night shift was underway, at a large yet relatively small company. As the day-time workers had exited, the night-time workers came and clocked in.
Amongst them was an employee called "Kurt" shortened for Kurtis. Known to be the only employee of color. At an average height of 5'9". Yet considerably overweight (350. lb). He likely was what one would imagine a man living in his parent's basement was like. Even more offsetting he was autistic with ADHD. Giving the assumption by others that he was slow Amongst other things.
It wasn't his first time working but he hadn't been working there long either. His job was a bit more unique, though, rather than being an office worker in a cubical or what have you. His field was cyber security. There were sub positions to the job but finding that he couldn't fully commit to a single he kinda did a little bit of everything within the position. Given only partially easy tasks on account of his autism.
He didn't seem to do much but he did enough. When the night shift ended he notably either clocked out first or last depending on how fatigued he was despite what most would consider a light workload.
To get to work he had to take 2 buses and a train. He Couldn't drive, not because he didn't have money for a car but because he didn't have a license for 2 reasons. He had a difficult time reading threw the required driver manual claiming it didn't hold his attention and because the idea of having to pay insurance on a car in order to drive it never sat right with him, frankly, he was content with public transportation as long as he could afford it.
Once he got home the usual routine was to surf the web and cycle threw the same 10 sites or if he was really tired just head to bed. His Labode of residence was a one-bedroom apartment. Still, he was blessed with this setup. In this day and age, the economy of the United States was only becoming more and more corrupt, gradually but surely, most were struggling more than they ever had, to afford their basic needs. employers and corporate were more greedy and clueless than usual so naturally, most land lords got it in their heads the increase the price of rent over time.
Kurt's landlord however was a lucky breed. because he remained the be a decent human being as most would call him. the rent was reasonable, the utilities actually got properly repaired when damaged, and to top it off he occasionally worked out a compromise when a tenant found themselves short on the rent depending on how often and reliably the tenants seem to be able to pay it forward.
for Kurt, it was probably something of a miracle that he could live in a place at all and despite the crippling despair that was crushing most people, to him it seemed to go almost unnoticed. he spent a great deal of his time either, being at home or at work, and for the time being nothing prompted him to reach beyond this unhealthy lifestyle... though hopefully in time that would change.
