Chapter 4
Six months had passed since we first arrived at the orphanage, and life had settled into a familiar rhythm. Each day dawned with the same routine - chores in the morning, followed by lessons in the afternoon, and finally, a meager meal shared amongst friends in the evening.
Despite the hardships we faced, there was a sense of camaraderie amongst the children. James, Olivia, and I had formed an inseparable bond, becoming each other's confidants and companions in the midst of uncertainty. Together, we navigated the challenges of orphanage life, finding solace in each other's company.
"Hey, Lillian, did you hear about the new kid?" James asked, nudging me as we scrubbed the floors of the common room.
I glanced up, curiosity piqued. "No, what about them?"
"They're from the next village over," James replied, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "I heard they're pretty good at skipping stones."
I chuckled, shaking my head. "Is that all it takes to impress you?"
Meanwhile, Emma, Ethan's twin sister, approached us with a mischievous grin. "Are you two gossiping again?"
James and I exchanged guilty looks before bursting into laughter. "Maybe just a little," I admitted.
Emma rolled her eyes playfully. "Well, save some gossip for me, will you? I need something to liven up my day."
Despite the routine of our daily lives, there were moments of change and excitement. Every now and then, we would hear whispers of other children being adopted - taken in by families of nobility or kind-hearted individuals looking to provide a better life for those less fortunate.
These moments filled us with a mixture of hope and apprehension. While we were happy for our friends who found new homes, there was always a nagging fear that we would be left behind, destined to remain at the orphanage while others moved on to brighter futures.
Despite these uncertainties, there were moments of joy and celebration as well. Recently, Emma and Ethan had celebrated their seventh birthday, and though we couldn't afford much, James and I had managed to scrounge together a makeshift party.
As we gathered around the table, laughing and sharing stories late into the night, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the friends I had found in James and Olivia. In a world filled with uncertainty and hardship, they were my constant companions, my pillars of strength in the face of adversity.
And as we drifted off to sleep that night, wrapped in the warmth of friendship and love, I knew that no matter what the future held, as long as we had each other, we would be alright.
