They had shared a night, but what would it cost them?
It cost them the little things, the smiles that were turned at the ground to avoid miscommunication, cost them the good mornings, good nights.
That little slip of the tongue, that little ‘I love you’, what should have brought them together, had instead pushed them apart.
Vera spent her days in bed, getting up once in a while to try to walk. She was getting better- but alone. She wasn’t standing there at her side, that smile wasn’t there to push her along.
The little note cards Harper had made to ease conversation lay unused on the table, gathering dust.
Vera healed, and she was gone.
Gone like the dark when faced with a light.
Because in the end, that’s what they were.
It was abrupt.
Totally without warning.
Harper woke one morning, and out of the corner of sleep-hazed eyes she saw Her there, saw her like she hadn’t in weeks, not in the soft greys of the clothes she’d been lent, but in the sharp lines of black.
Something seemed different, though.
Golden eyes were dull as Vera fitted her sheathes to herself, their weight somewhat reassuring, considering what she was about to do.
Harper sat up, golden hair ruffled but eyes alight with worry as she took in the sight in front of her.
“Where are you going?”
It was the first words she’d said in days.
The other girl seemed to deflate a little bit before picking up a set of pre-prepared cards, and holding the first one up.
Away.
“Why?”
A little more deflated.
I can’t be here anymore.
I’m a danger to you.
You’re…a danger to me.
This won’t work.
She turned to face the door, then turned back.
Walked over to where Harper sat, alone and confused, violet eyes wide.
Cupped her cheek in a hand, touched her lips to her forehead because if their lips touched again she didn’t know if she could pull back.
Leant to her ear, spoke a final word.
Goodbye.
And then she was gone.
And Harper was left there, mouth ajar, words left unspoken dying in her throat as she realized what was different about that girl, that Queen.
Her scarf, those wings.
They were golden.
A strand of her own hair fell into her eyes and she stared at it, willing it to go away, be gone, it can’t be true.
But it was.
She was gone.
And she’d taken part of Harper’s sun with her.
But that’s to be expected, when they were how they were.
One was the shadows, and one was the sun.
One the bright, blessed day.
One the dark, sacred night.
But when they meet, those two fleeting moments of dawn and dusk, when they were allowed to mix for just a brief second, each could truly think to themselves:
What a wonderful world.
A/N: And the hiatus is begun! Ehe hope you enjoy the suspense, i'll be back into the swing of things pretty soon, most likely.
Until next time,

(Sept. 6 2016) Hey guys! I'm so sorry it's been so long, and I'm not even sure if this edit will show up as a notification, but I was considering just ending this story here, and starting up a new one following V and Harper as they go their own ways. Let me know what you're thinking! I'd love some input.832Please respect copyright.PENANAr1NbT8zUtK
