There was a time I wasn't like this as I am now. An immortal wearing at all times a mask of deception with a grin and giving off my sense of humor. As a detective solving cases where humans don't know where else to look. Remaining the same from my appearances as the world changes on without me. Horse drawn carriages turn into motorized coaches and now aiming for speed to win against time, yet their lives are still too short. So was mine before all this.
Here I am, protecting the life of a mortal who is swift at stealing but never hurt or killed anyone in her line of work. A false accusation has been put on her for murder that she never committed.
As life and love would have it. The element of surprise. Even in immortality; I thought of nothing special about the case or the woman. It turned out a lot more. The woman, Fia Olafssen or also known as 'Magpie' has the similar face as that of my deceased beloved, Klara. As I saw her for the first time I thought I was dreaming or hallucinating. Blinked to be sure and held my breath.
Her large clear dark green-blue eyes like the sea looked at me with suspicion and caution. Quickly turning her head slightly away from me that few wavy reddish-brown hairs covered partially her face and eyes. My glance must have been unpleasant for her to react so. A stranger gaping in surprise.
A burning urge burned through my throat to call out her name as I knew, reach out a hand to touch yet I kept it all under composure. Balling my fists into my trench coat pockets and clenched my teeth. I knew all too well this was what I hoped or dreamed vainfully and foolishly for so long. The reality is different. The living has one chance, one chance only and that's it. As a clear fact I watched her die in my hands before I became what I am now. A vampire. I remember her words too well. Although I want to forget them because of the pain it is one of the very few things that will remain unforgotten. Forever.
"Gregor. No matter what happens. I will always love you. F-farewell my love."
I know Klara was always true to her words and never broke a promise but if she saw me now. I would understand why looking away in disgust and starting to hate me. No matter what I love her, I can't hate her; never. I'm not the Gregor she has known all those centuries ago. So it's farewell to that old Gregor, that life, I once knew and loved. On New Year's Eve 1900 Gregor Menard was born, detective Gregor Menard from Cologne. Offering a hand to those in need and support the innocent. A vampire concealed behind the mask of deception as a detective.
"Remove the shackles." I pointed to the shackles behind Miss Olafssen's. She blinked of surprise to my words.
"But she would attempt to escape, detective." Whispered Officer Hartner in suspicion.767Please respect copyright.PENANAy4usLNBjPR
I shook my head. "Voluntarily walking to the police and confess and asking in return protection, hardly. Especially when noted her life is at stake." I smirked and stepped closer to Hartner. "Above all, I would be curious to know how the police would be able to protect a suspect who is cuffed in cell when the mafia is after?" I whispered to his ear.
"De-detective, how did you know that, that they are after her?" He blinked and was amazed.767Please respect copyright.PENANAfY1F3flbhJ
"It's my job to know. I'll tell you once I have all the necessary facts collected."
Soon Officer Hartner unshackled Miss Olafssen and walked out of my office with the other officers.767Please respect copyright.PENANAnDID0f3Wmd
She massaged her wrists and remained seated on the wooden chair. "You must trust me greatly to unshackle me so soon, detective. What is it that made you trust me so?"767Please respect copyright.PENANAPRuaTgN0U6
"I am not like these police officers, I'm different and I believe you are actually quite capable of keeping yourself well hidden, Magpie." I seated myself at my desk and lit a cigarette.
Her eyes widened of surprise and was for a moment at a loss of words. Her expression was priceless and reflected with such innocence. Although a thief but different to her kind and I have encountered worse sort of people or rather monsters. I smirked to her reaction; I could not hold back a smile entirely. Soon she recollected herself as she blinked and looked for a brief moment to the floor before her. "I-I suppose you're right."
"The mafia wants you dead, what is their reason?"767Please respect copyright.PENANABPpiAEphoJ
"I thought you would know." She looked at me bewildered.
"Sorry to disappoint you Magpie but I am not Sherlock Holmes in person. I have my own methods."
"Methods? I guess we all have our own." She paused in thought.
