We’d been walking through the woods for god knows how long, and after another minute or so, Damon slowed to a stop.
He turned toward me, lashes lowering when he took in my small form, and he stepped closer.
“Here,” he said then, pulling something out from his pocket, “I got this for you.”
I blinked when he let go of a chain, and a long, silver-chained necklace dropped out from his hand. There was a pendant containing a wolf standing on a crescent moon, and under there was a glass teardrop with some sort of leaf in it.
Damon just stepped toward me and clipped the necklace around my neck, making me gaze up curiously.
He caught the pendant and ran his thumb along it, but he just smiled and set it on my chest. “So, now you’ll be reminded of me every time you try to escape. Maybe giving you second thoughts will prevent that.”
I gazed down at the necklace before looking back up at him. “Damon… why are you giving me presents if you’re just going to kill me?”
His eyes flickered up to mine. “Is there a problem with that?”
“You’re… you’re making it seem like you care about me,” I said then.
He smiled. “And what if I do?”
I stared for a moment. “But… you said yourself you’re going to show no remorse when killing me. You will show remorse if you care about me, right?”
He suddenly stepped toward me, making me back off, but he just pressed me to a tree.
His face was inches from mine, but I kept eye contact with him, nonetheless. “You are mine.”
“I am yours?” I echoed.
He nodded before looking back down at me.
“Am I yours or is the wish yours?” I asked him then.
He just leaned closer, making me suck in a breath. “You are mine. The wish is mine. It’s both.”
“I don’t understand,” I said then.
“I am obligated to protect you, Winter Williams,” he said then, lashes lowering. “I am bound to you by blood,” he raised his hand to expose the scar from our pact, “so therefore, I am yours, and you are mine. We are one.”
“And you’re going to kill me?” I said then, feeling my eyes sparkle.
“Yes,” he said then, smiling now, “and don’t look so bummed about it. Jesus. You’re insane.”
“I know,” I said then, staring down at his chest. “I don’t care if I die. I just want to find who killed my father. I want to make them pay.”
Damon tipped my chin up, making me blink.
He just smiled. “We will, Angel. We will find him.”
“And we will hurt him?” I added.
He chuckled and nodded.
I blinked hazily before smiling. “So, you do care about me?”
“You’re my kitten,” he said then, smiling slightly, “since elementary school. It would be a sin not to.”
I felt my cheeks glow. “I never thought that the person destined to kill me would ever say that.”
“The least I could do would be to make everything worth it, right?” he said then.
“Yes,” I responded. “And… I’d rather you kill me than other wolves seeking wishes.” I gazed up. “You and I both know that I’m bound to die—I am a spirit and it’s my destiny—but I get to choose by which hand and who will be grated my wish at death. And I choose you.”
His eyes softened.
“There will be others who will come after me,” I told him. “And I only want you to get the wish. So protect me until it’s time.”
He nodded, gazing down at me. “I will.
“Until the end.”
