Meet me at that old, abandoned warehouse on main street.
It was a text from Damon that I got only an hour ago.
Be there before eight.
Or else.
Despite my internal-self screaming to disobey because it was fun to irritate him… I decided it would’ve been best to listen.
I was too curious, anyway.
My mom was at work… yet again.
She always worked her night shifts from eight in the evening to four in the morning, and she’d leave at six because her work was so far downtown.
It was good for me, anyway… because I could sneak out!
I just gazed up at the abandoned warehouse in the middle of this sketchy street, and I gazed down at my phone.
I’m here, I typed.
He didn’t respond at first, but eventually his thinking bubble came up as he typed:
Come inside.
I blinked a couple times.
Inside? Like where inside.
The doorway, dingus.
Hey! This is a bully-free environment! I will have you arrested, sirrrr.
I could hear him chuckling, I swear.
Just come inside before I decide to come out there myself and tackle you.
I smiled then.
What if I want to be tackled?
His thought bubble popped up again.
If I do, no pancakes.
I gasped then, typing frantically.
Okay! I’m coming! Don’t bring the pancakes into this conversation!
He just responded in amusement:
I love how threatening to tackle you doesn’t scare you in the slightest. But the thought of having no pancakes for breakfast is absolutely horrifying to you.
I replied:
I like pancakes…
Just come inside, Kitten.
I sighed and gazed up, watching the clouds drift over the tops of the building before I stepped over to it.
After pushing open the doors, I gazed further into the entrance, glancing around nervously before I stepped in fully.
It was dark in here… just little rays of moonlight beaming through the cracks in the ceiling and lighting the place with a soft glow.
There was dust everywhere, although nothing seemed dangerous or “trip-worthy”.
The doors slammed shut behind me, and I yelped in surprise.
But before I could turn, my sight went dark.
I sucked in a breath, feeling a blindfold tie behind my head.
Damon let go, gently running his fingers along my neck. “I want to play a game with you.”
I gazed up into the darkness of my sight. “A game? What game?”
Aren’t we going to play a game at midnight?
“Marco Polo,” he stated then, pulling my hair over my shoulders. “Would you be okay with that?”
I nodded briefly.
“If you catch me, I’ll do anything you want.”
Anything?
I heard his shoes tick around me, and I gazed up, lips parting when he stopped in front of me. “You have two minutes. You must find me.”
And his pretense suddenly vanished.
I breathed uneasily for a moment; all of my senses intensified as if shielding my eyes make me ten times more sensitive.
I could feel the dust on my skin… I could hear the soft blows of the wind on the walls.
I just swallowed something hard. “Marco.”
His voice came from a distance. “Polo.”
I turned in his direction, starting forward as my shoes crunched on some rocks.
As I walked, I held my hands out. “Marco.”
His voice suddenly came from my right. “Polo.”
I spun around in his direction, starting toward him. “Marco!”
He was now farther away. “Polo. You have one minute, Winter.”
I then ran in his direction. “Marco!”
He was now behind me. “Polo.”
I spun around then, sweat sliding down my temples. “How are you doing that?”
He just chuckled, in the exact same place.
I stepped over to him then. “Marco.”
He was farther in front of me, clearly taking steps backward. “Polo.”
“You’re fast,” I whispered, “I can’t win this.”
“Sucks to suck, doesn’t it?” He was still farther ahead of me.
I stopped then, coming up with an idea.
I resisted smiling. “Marco.”
He was behind me again. “Polo.”
I spun around then and darted straight for him, and despite knowing he slipped out of the way, my shoes suddenly hit a dent in the ground.
I yelped then, falling forward.
But he suddenly caught me, making my breath shake when he helped me back onto my feet.
“Are you alright?” he said then, untying my blindfold.
It fell from my eyes, making me wince despite me being in the darkness.
I gazed up at him then, blinking when he stared down at me with those cautious eyes.
And his phone suddenly started beeping, signifying the end of the two minutes.
He gazed down at it, and then back at me.
A wide smile spread across my face. “I win.”
His lashes immediately lowered when he realized I had been gripping his arm. “You tricked me, you little shit.”
I gazed up at him then. “A deal’s a deal. There were no rules, Damon.”
He just sighed and gazed down at me. “What do you want me to do?”
I smiled sweetly. “I’ll think about it.”
He just let go of me and shook his head, smirking. “You really know how to get me on my knees, don’t you?”
“Yes,” I said then, gazing up, “it’s better this way because I’m short. And you’re too tall. So now you’ll be my height.”
He just tapped my nose. “You’re a trickster. I must keep that in mind.”
“You wouldn’t have let me fall anyway,” I said boldly. “Not even if it mattered if you’d win the game or not.”
He just stared down at me. “I like you.”
“I know.”
