Is a child.
No, really. I'm being serious. It's not an ordinary child, but it's a child.
It's pitch black, a living shadow. It can walk through anything, even you, but when you reach out to touch it, it stays solid.
It always has its eyes closed, or almost always. When it opens them they're completely neon blue, emitting enough light to illuminate an entire room at midnight during a new moon. Most of the time it will ask you to play games with it, or maybe make it something to eat. After all, the poor child has no parents.
When you refuse, or it senses you growing bored, that's when it begins.
You don't even notice it at first. It's a trip here, a stumble there. Maybe your hand feels like holding a pencil is a bit clunky. But soon it's terrible just trying to move around your house, the best you can do is toddle to the nearest object that will hold your weight, lean on it, and calculate where you have to fall into next.
Then your speech goes. Hard words first, long ones, then even simple words get you tripping over your tongue. Any childish speech patterns you'd thought you'd grown out of come back full force. You can't speak to anyone because it just sounds like a toddler babbling about something or another that they dreamed up one night.
And then you can't control when you have to go to the bathroom, and resort to staying in your house, curled up and wearing a diaper and miserable, and then it comes back. And you beg it to just finish the job, make you look like how you're acting and that's when it smiles and giggles, and it sounds exactly like a little child who just got a new playmate, and everything goes black. When you wake up, everything about your adulthood seems like just a dream, and you've gone to this child's world, to play around with them forever, never realizing it's your own childhood that you cut short when you decided to grow up and leave anything childish behind you.
