The expansive field was littered with dead trees and covered in a thin browning layer of grass, but Tim was nowhere to be seen. His campsite was already setup, an unlit fire-pit and all, he did say he might come a couple of days early. I pulled out my phone. Great, no reception. Maybe he's out getting more wood, or supplies? I suppose I'll wait.
~~~ Later that night ~~~
I heard something by the tent's doorway, and so I shot up out of my sleeping bag.
"Tim, is that you?"
The doorway parted, as if by itself. It was him, his head upside down and poking through the door.
"Haha, you joker, how are you even doing that? ... Tim?"
His face was slack, as if he were sleeping, and yet his eyes were wide open, and milky white. His body flew towards me, collapsing the tent's door frame. I screamed and ducked under just as his upside down face flew over me. The entire tent ripped at the seams, and it began to drag, with me still in it.
I hopped out of the tent and encircled the fire-pit, keeping the fire between us. Tim's upside down body hovered in the air. What remained of the tent still hung off of him, and as it slunk to the ground, the body slowly rotated back towards me.
"What is this!?" I yelled. "Who's doing this? Stop it!"
His body rocketed forward over the fire. I sprinted away from the fire-pit, towards the winding pathway that led back to the car. Just as I was about to reach it, another body appeared in front of me, floating at an odd angle but still facing me like the other. The two bodies corralled me to the right, along the opposite direction of the path, and into the bush.
I scrambled through the shrubs, occasionally glancing back to see even more floating bodies trailing behind. If it weren't for the eerie light up ahead, I'd be completely blind. As I burst into a clearing, my ankle tripped on something solid. The source of the white light dissipated.
I rolled onto my back and sat up, peering back into the bushes, hoping to spot the ghostly figures before they spotted me. Nothing, they were gone? I glanced back into the clearing and saw a great, hollowed-out tree in it's centre. An odd hum reverberated through the air.
Back by my feet, I tried searching for what had tripped me and spotted a tree root. It sprung to life and leapt at my position. As I backed away in panic, it managed to coil around my legs. Once it had wrapped me up, it jerked me towards the dead tree.
I screamed and yelled, hoping that someone would hear me, but there wasn't a soul around. As it dragged me through the brush, I clawed at the grey dirt, hoping to slow it down. It didn't stop, soon it was clear that the root trapping my legs belonged to the tree.
It dragged me through a small, hollowed-out opening at the base, and down into the darkness. More roots surrounded me, I couldn't move. I tried to scream but another root gagged me. All around me were grey bodies, buried in the dirt. They were me and I was them.
