Walter was the first to reach the plaza. Crashing down right in front of the large, hexagonal plating in the center that could open up for the reactor to be brought above ground. There was no one in sight. No private security, no guards, no Silent, and no Warmonger. He looked around for a moment, completely suspicious, before he powered up the blaster in the gauntlet of his exo-suit and aimed it at the plating. If the reactor wasn’t going to be brought up to them, then he would bring them down to it. As soon as the energy hit the metal it began heating it up, quickly causing it to become red hot.
Right as he was about to start using his other gauntlet as well, aiming it down as it charged up, Leviathan was sidelined. Tackled in a flash and slammed into one of the decorative walls that circled around the Praxis plaza. He barely got his gauntlets cut off in time to stop the energy blast hitting Sentinel. Wailing on him, punch after punch, was Warmonger in her own exo-suit. Char on the chest of her suit from where Tate had knocked her back, but it clearly hadn’t slowed her down even a bit. Each hit was so powerful that it caused Leviathan’s interface inside his helmet to start overloading, unable to track all the trauma being done. Just as Sentinel started to charge towards the two, he was cut off by three Silent dropping down.
Just outside of the plaza Conduit, Spitfire, and Total Eclipse were trying to make their way to it when Silent attacked them as well. A rope dart came slashing towards them, with Total Eclipse knocking it away before she even had the chance to look in the direction it came from. Clashing katanas with another immediately after, deflecting every vicious swing the best she possibly could. Four stood between one of the tall plaza walls and both Spitfire and Conduit. Not bothering to even slow down, but rather pick up the pace in their sprint, both of them continued to run head first towards them all. Deflecting kunai that were thrown at them by hardening their skin, it was Spitfire that made the first move. She jumped, using the gauntlets that Gio had given her, and while pointing her fists straight down used energy blasts to propel herself higher. She launched entirely over the Silent and even the tall plaza wall, landing on the other side with a roll to dampen her fall.
Conduit was the next to make it over the wall, though far less gracefully than his sister had. Rather than blast himself over, he used one of The Silent like a spring-board. Jumping and landing on them, kicking off and making the long jump to the top of the wall. He grasped it just with his fingertips on one hand, hanging there for a second as he watched Total Eclipse parrying a katana and rope dart back to back. She glanced up for only a moment, giving him a nod to confirm she had it under control. He easily pulled himself up and stood on the top of the wall, looking back to see three of The Silent beginning to scale the wall as well after him, climbing up it like it wasn’t a smooth surface. Looking down into the outdoor plaza didn’t reveal a very serene scene either.
Leviathan managed to knock Warmonger back just as Spitfire landed and punched one of the heavily armed Praxis guards in the chest. Leviathan brought his foot up and ignited the thruster on it, which sent the exo-suit full of rage flying backwards and slamming into The Silent that Sentinel was fighting. The pair crashed through a glass wall, sliding until they came to a halt inside the Praxis Industries lobby. A siren began blaring from inside the building after that, an alarm that was probably installed to prevent break-ins. This time it was just alerting every guard left inside the building that the team had finally arrived. Sentinel turned to ready himself, preparing for anyone to come from the building.

Coming over the commlinks that he’d made sure everyone was outfitted with, Sentinel’s voice sounded in the entire team’s ears. “Walter, Tana, you two focus on getting that reactor above ground! We’ll hold everyone off as much as we can.” Shortly before his comms cut off grunting could be heard. Gunshots sounded shortly after, which Sentinel managed to easily dodge behind cover to avoid. He tossed an EMP grenade into the building where the armed guards were pouring out of, disabling their high tech guns momentarily and their interfaces.
Conduit came sliding in from the other side of the plaza, putting up a large, blue energy shield that encapsulated himself and Sentinel. Bullets practically bounced off it, but with each hit small cracks began appearing in the bubble. Just before it shattered completely he pulled the energy back into himself and shot it outwards, hitting a large group of the armed guards in the process and sending them all tumbling away. Warmonger quickly got back to her feet, seeing the drop in Conduit’s shield and using it as her chance to charge. Attacking both Sentinel and Conduit, with them both attacking her back.
Fending off both of the heroes from either side of her, she easily spotted Spitfire and Leviathan both working on getting the metal plating open. As soon as she saw the girl grab it and begin to pull it back, bending it slightly, Warmonger let out a scream in a fit of rage. She smacked Sentinel away, hitting him in the stomach and knocking him back. Conduit barely got his own hand up in time, catching her armored fist. She forced him down onto his knees, not letting back as she put all of her weight into the next punch. Not able to catch or counter that one, he took it straight to his face. Hardening his skin right where it made contact, but still being hit away from her by the sheer force of it.

Igniting her thrusters and heading straight for Spitfire, no one stopped her as she grappled the younger woman. Despite the fact that Warmonger had the advantage, both tactically and having the ability to currently fly, she quickly learned an important lesson. No one fucks with Montana Crawford. Unable to break her grapple, Spitfire did the next best thing. She pulled her head back and headbutted the older woman square in the forehead of her hardened helmet and mask. She did it two more times before they both went crashing down into the ground, still barely inside the plaza. Rolling right back to her feet, a red streak went arching out towards the winged exo-suit and struck it, again, right in the head.
It was a feat that they’d seen accomplished on Leviathan’s similar mask, the cracking. Everyone around was impressed that the brother and sister duo had managed to crack one of the strongest materials known in the world. It was seen again as Warmonger lifted her head up to look at the red attired hero, a crack clean down the helmet with a radial crack inside the lens of the eye socket. Though they had never succeeded at fully obliterating their father’s mask, everyone was willing to bet that if anyone could do it — Tana could.
Both of the women looked back at Leviathan, who was still working on ripping back the metal plating himself and making no real progress without super strength. The moment they both looked back at each other, locking hidden eyes, it’s like they both knew what the other was going to do. Taking off at the same time back towards the center of the plaza at dash, Spitfire made it just moments before five of The Silent did. Three went after her father, causing him to divert his attention towards getting to the reactor and on blocking a flurry of blows. Warmonger was hot on his daughter’s heels as she clashed with two others of The Silent. Seeing the armored woman rushing at her, Spitfire did a move she hadn’t used in a long time.
Jumping up to dodge above the oncoming attack, she punched down and hit one of the ninja’s in the back of the head. She brought her legs up as she jumped, kicking them out in a perfect split and kicking both the other ninja and the older woman charging her square in their faces. It was powerful enough that it caused what was left of Warmonger’s mask to crack completely, sending her backwards with enough force for her to hit the back of her head on the hard ground. The mask split open and fell apart in two pieces, revealing she was completely unconscious from the kick.
Across the metal plating was Leviathan, fighting three ninjas on his own. Though he performed an unthinkable feat. Watching as his daughter carried out a perfect split kick while dodging and hitting a third enemy, he mimicked her motions easily. His legs kicked out into a split, allowing his feet to make contact with two people at the same time, while he dodged over and punched the third in the back of the head. Landing exactly how she had, gracefully on his feet. He looked up at her, impressed with himself that he could still even do a split. Perhaps that motion mimicry of his was helpful after all.

“Heads up, we have about twenty more on my heels!” Total Eclipse's voice came over the comms next. She cut a sharp corner around one of the plaza walls, knocking a thrown kunai away with one of her katanas as she made her way towards the rest of the group. It seemed as if The Silent and Praxis security were pouring out from everywhere, surrounding the group entirely and forcing them all to put their backs to the center.
Before anyone had time to make the first move, the ground began to shake. Violent enough that it caused some people to lose their balance and cracks to begin forming in the ground around the plaza. Fault lines formed in a radius out from the metal plating, which began to open as the glowing reactor was raised from the ground. A different alarm began blaring from the Praxis building, until a power surge happened. All the lights around the building flickered, eventually going off completely, until the only thing left glowing was the reactor itself.
Leviathan tackled Total Eclipse just as a large chunk of debris from the cracking skyscraper came smashing into the ground. The ground shifted under everyone’s feet, rolling as if they were standing on water and not something solid. Another power surge, this time coming from the reactor itself, rippled through. An energy blast shooting out from it, similar to how Tate and Tana’s powers worked, slammed into anyone left standing and sent them tumbling away.

“How radioactive is that shit?!” Walter’s panicked voice came over the comms next, static spiking shortly afterwards. There was no response for a moment before grunting could be heard as another shockwave came blasting out and slammed into anything in its path. The Praxis Industries building began to rumble, threatening to cave in on itself already.

“You really don’t wanna know!” Gio responded through the static. “Small enough it shouldn’t kill us yet!”

“YET?!” Walter’s exasperated tone was clear even through the crackling. He began ranting in broken intervals about how they were definitely all already dead at this point. Fighting off any of the ninjas left standing that were hellbent on killing them before the reactor did.

While everyone else was either being attacked or struggling to get back to their feet as the shockwaves got stronger, Tate was fighting to keep himself standing upright as he walked towards the reactor. Having to hang onto anything he could with each energy surge that slammed into him, almost losing his grip at one point but regaining his purchase and continuing forward shortly after. It was like the reactor had a heartbeat. The pulses were rhythmic, allowing him small gaps to move freely before he risked being knocked back.
“Gio, Nia, you two get the hell outta here!” Tate shouted over the comms, looking back to see his sister fighting her way towards him through the pulses as well. “Walter, get them both outta here!” He knew there wasn’t any chance that anyone other than him or his sister made it to the reactor at that point, not unless they had a death wish. None of the ninjas nor the Praxis guards had any known powers that could allow them to make it there either.
He didn’t even wait for Tana to reach him, sticking his arm into the reactor and feeling the pure energy burning through his veins as it began coursing through him. He held on the best he could, afraid that if he let go he’d lose his footing and be thrown away as it continued to grow stronger. The pain was unimaginable. It felt like he was being ripped apart at a molecular level. Burned away until nothing was left as he tried to keep absorbing everything he could.

Walter didn’t hesitate, doing exactly as his son told him and snatching up both Nia and Gio. Carrying one in each arm, awkwardly, as he flew them both towards where they’d stashed their motorcycles over a block away. They could hear Tana over the static, trying to call out for Tate while fighting her way still towards him. It was only a matter of moments before her commlink went completely dead, not even offering crackling static any longer. As he dropped them off, Gio pulled his own mask up and looked at him with a panicked expression. “Walter, if-...” He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself enough to properly speak. “If he tries to absorb all of that by himself, he’ll die. They both will.” He watched as Leviathan’s mask opened to reveal his face, staring back into the younger man’s eyes with a steeled look. Walter pushed him towards the motorcycle, watching as he got on it.

“I promised.” Was all Walter said before closing his mask and igniting his thrusters. He went soaring into the sky and then quickly turned towards the direction of the Praxis building. Having to avoid debris falling from other buildings beginning to crack and crumble.

Back at the reactor, as he struggled to continue to absorb it all on his own, Tate saw his sister finally climbing up the large hill that the reactor had caused. She reached out for her brother’s hand, but the intensity of the energy threatened to send her flying back completely away from him. Their fingertips brushed as they struggled to grab each other, eventually her hand was knocked away as she lost her grip and went tumbling backwards. Just as he was about to lose all hope and let go himself, he saw Tana’s head reemerge over the cusp of the hill. Leviathan behind her, holding her up and pushing her towards Tate. His thrusters were maxed out, barely even holding him in place against the shockwaves that came in quick intervals.
As soon as their hands touched, Tate yanked his sister towards him. She began siphoning off the energy he’d already absorbed, the blue energy bubble surrounding them both quickly turning purple as her own red energy grew. The pulses from the reactor finally came to an end as one last, large wave shot out. It crashed into what was remaining of the walls surrounding the plaza, obliterating them entirely. Just inches from touching Leviathan before it quickly rushed back towards what appeared to be the reactor, crashing into both of the siblings and knocking them both away from each other in a bright energy blast.
Tate went one way, Tana the other, tumbling down the hill away from the now dark reactor. Blue and red glowing from where they were both lying. Part of their suits had burned away from the intensity of the energy, revealing that their veins were glowing under their skin as the energy bounced around and tried to find a way to escape. Straining to keep it contained, it was Tate that managed to get to his feet before he doubled over. Walter landed beside him first, watching as he held his sides and struggled to keep himself from letting out what would still be a devastating surge. He looked up at Leviathan, staring into the green lenses with his own glowing blue eyes.
Picking his son up and quickly grabbing his daughter as well, Walter ignited his thrusters again and flew all three of them up into the sky. Going high above what was left of the Praxis building, even well over the height of the city’s tallest building, he eventually just hovered there as he held both Tate and Tana under his arms. “Let… let us go…” Tate grunted out, reaching up to grab his father’s hand that was clutching tightly onto his abdomen.

Walter responded by opening his mask again and looking down at both of his children. “This is no time to be a hero, right?” He smiled at them both. “Go ahead, just let it all out.” Tate gripped tightly at his hand, closing his eyes as the energy sparked off his body and came out in a massive surge.

From down on the ground all that could be seen in the night sky were two large explosions of red and blue. They blossomed outwards and made purple right in the center. The shockwaves were massive, but didn’t even get close to reaching the ground. From just inside the police line Gio and Nia watched helplessly as three bodies went hurtling towards the ground. Losing sight of them completely as they disappeared below the skyline. Starting their motorcycles back up to head in the direction that they’d watch them fall.
Unseen to them, as Walter seemingly lifelessly hurtled towards the ground, his suit sparked back to life in a flash of green. Thrusters ignited again as he managed to tackle both of his children mid-air, hitting the ground hard as he shielded them with the wings much like he had Gio inside the warehouse. It wasn’t a graceful landing by any means. All of them hit hard and rolled, with Walter being thrown the farthest away. Lying out in the street, just outside of the plaza, it didn’t take long for Gio and Nia to reach them. Gio threw his motorcycle down, not caring how hard it hit the ground as he ran towards the two siblings at a full sprint.
He reached Tana first, hearing her gasp for breath as she jolted awake. He dropped to his knees and propped her up, pulling what was left of her mask off her face and wrapping his arms tightly around her. She was pretty beat up, but otherwise seemed to be fine. It took her a few moments, but soon she began frantically searching for her brother. Seeing him several feet away and lying face down, not moving at all.
Nia quickly reached Tana as Gio got back to his feet and stumbled towards Tate. Helping the younger woman to her feet, both of them watching as Gio rolled her brother over and pulled him into his lap. It was very reminiscent of the night at the dock with Warmonger. Clutching at his chest, and shaking him to get any form of response. His mask was shredded, barely covering any part of his face, so it was easy to see as his eyes shot open and he let out a loud gasp. Unaware that he’d even been holding his own breath, Giovanni exhaled loudly as he choked back tears. Where the energy had been coursing through his veins had left patterns faintly burnt into his skin, especially on the arm that he’d held onto the reactor with.
It didn’t take long for Tate to sit up, looking around as he held onto his side. He saw his sister was fine, which was a relief, but there had been another person in the sky with them. Once his eyes finally found the person he was looking for his breath hitched. Lying propped up against a wall, head hanging down and the wings of his exo-suit clearly embedded in the brick behind him, was their father. The reactor in the chest of his suit was cracked and completely dark. He didn’t respond as his son called out for him while staggering to his feet. Gio reached out, trying to catch Tate, but missed as he started sprinting towards Walter and collapsed to his knees beside him.

“Dad?” He asked sheepishly, feeling the tears well up as his face grew hot. “C’mon, you asshole, you don’t get to die like this!” He reached out and grabbed the chest plate of the suit, gripping it tightly with one hand.

The other three watched on in silence. Tana covered her mouth, the only thing still holding her up was Nia as she began to cry herself. Tate looked down at his hand that was burnt, balling it up into a tight fist as his tears fell onto it. Finally they heard it, the choked wheezing. There was no distortion to it, saying that his suit was truly, entirely dead. His whole body shook, but it was clear he was struggling to breathe. Reaching up with a shaky hand to find the emergency release on his helmet and hitting it to open and reveal his face.
He was bleeding from the head wound that Tate had given him inside the warehouse and his nose, but otherwise he looked completely fine. His suit had taken the most damage, charred until it was nearly unrecognizable. He hit the other releases, allowing the wings and gauntlets on his suit to fall away. He fell forward afterwards, crashing against his son who was using all of the strength he had left to hold him up.

“No need to cry for me, kids. I’m still here.” Walter chuckled, which led into a coughing fit. He brought his hand up to cover his mouth, pulling it away whenever he felt something warm on his palm. Looking at it revealed a handful of blood. He took in a shaky breath, trying to clear his throat afterwards. “Well, for now, at least.” He added.

“We need to get you to a hospital. Gio, help me get him up!” Tate pushed his father back, adjusting his position so he could shoulder part of his weight on his good arm. Gio quickly came over, rushing to the other side and squatting down to prepare to lift Walter. Although the older man wasn’t having it, waving one of his hands dismissively at both of the boys.

“No-” he started, coughing again and failing to cover his mouth as the blood came spraying out. He swallowed hard, shaking his head this time. “There’s no need for that. I’m afraid it’s too late for me-”

“Don’t say that!” Panicked, Tate interrupted him. He gritted his teeth, refusing to listen to what his father was trying to tell him.

Again, he chuckled. Reaching up with his hand that wasn’t covered in blood and grabbing what was left of his son’s mask. Once he pulled it off, he ruffled his hair, smiling at him proudly. “I don’t get to risk my life and let it make up for everything I fucked up, kid.” He let his hand rest on the top of his son’s head, looking over him for just a moment. “But there is a place you can take me that’s better than any hospital… I want to go home. One last time.”

Maybe it was because it was his final wish, or maybe because he’d just literally thrown away his life to save so many others — but Tate gave Walter what he wanted. This time Nia helped them, leaving dealing with the police and the press to Sentinel. Getting back across the police line somehow, and to where the Capitanis often stored many of their vehicles. They loaded everyone up into one of Gio’s SUVs and drove to the Crawford residence. Trying to make sure they all didn’t just look like they’d stopped a nuke from wiping out part of the city. All of the radio stations and news stations were already reporting on what had happened. Videos going viral of the explosion in the sky. Rumors that Warmonger had been involved and gotten away again, as her body was again not found in the rubble. That wasn’t something any of them could think about at that moment. They were more worried about getting Walter back to the Crawford residence. Nia helped the brother and sister get their father into the apartment building and up to the third floor, standing in front of the apartment door that he’d once been used to seeing every single day.
Leaving Tana and Nia standing outside to keep holding Walter up, and also watching for any nosy neighbors, Tate went inside first. It was so late that everyone was asleep, but he woke them all up and prepared them for what they were about to see. Ky and Julia sat on the couch with their mother and baby sister, waiting to see what was on the other side of the door. When Tate walked back over and opened the door, it was obvious by the shock on all of their faces what their reactions were going to be.
As soon as they got Walter inside the apartment and shut the door, Julia was the first to do or say anything. She jumped up and immediately sprinted to him, crashing hard into him and wrapping her arms around him while excitedly shouting “daddy” over and over. She nearly knocked him over, but he placed his hand between her shoulder blades and patted. The next to do anything was Penelope, who walked over to him and hesitated. She looked far more sickly and thin than she had the last time they saw each other in person, but she could tell that he was unwell himself. It took her a moment, but eventually she reached out to him with her slender hand and caressed his cheek. She crashed into him as well, wrapping her arms around him and letting out a sob. He wrapped an arm around her and buried his face into her hair, taking in a deep breath as he held her.

“I know it means nothing, but I’m sorry.” Walter let out a shaky breath, tears streaming down his cheeks as well. “I’m so sorry for everything.” He looked past his wife and daughter, looking at Ky and Emmalie still on the couch. His youngest didn’t really know who he was, as Walter had only been in her life for the first couple of years and now she was nearly six years old. Ky stood up, with Emmalie hiding behind them. They walked over to their father, staring at him for a moment. “Kyla…?” Walter squinted, trying to decipher if this was his second oldest daughter standing in front of him. They had the exact same two beauty marks under the same eye that Kyla had, after all.

“It’s, uh, it’s Ky, dad.” Tate corrected. “They go by Ky, now.”

Walter’s eyes softened and filled with obvious pride as he held out a hand, smiling. “But you’re still my child.” Ky’s eyes widened at the support, then they frowned deeply as they looked away. Trying to hide the tears as they threatened to fall. They took a step forward and took their father’s hand, refusing to get any closer. For Ky, someone that never did physical touch and was typically very emotionless, it was incredible they even did that. “I’m so proud that you found yourself, my precious Ky.” Walter squeezed their hand, finally directing his attention down towards his youngest. Julia and Penelope let go of him as he knelt down to Emmalie’s height.
“And it’s hard to believe that this is my littlest girl.” He smiled at her, holding out his hand again. She just stared at it before looking back up at him again, thumb in her mouth as she gnawed on it. “Tate’s taken such great care of you, hasn’t he?” Slowly she reached her hand out as well, grabbing one of his fingers and hanging onto it while nodding her head. “That’s good. I’m glad that you’re all doing well.” Once he was finished, Tana and Nia helped him stand back up straight again.

“Why don’t you stay a while?” Penelope asked, wiping away her tears. “Just… just until morning?” Walter couldn’t help but smile at her, gently stroking her cheek one final time.

“I don’t have until morning.” He replied sadly. “It’s easier this way.” He took a step back towards the door, taking one last look at his children and wife. Tana went over to hold their mother this time, having to stop her from reaching out for him as Nia and Tate walked him out of the apartment. Once the door was shut again, he let out a sigh. “Let’s go to the park. The sun will be up soon.”
Again, Tate did as his father wanted. Nia helped walk him into the park, sitting him down on a park bench with his son before she quietly left them there. It was close to the apartment, as it was the park that they always went to play in whenever Tate and Tana were kids. Walter loved taking them there and watching them run around in the grass. For a while they sat there silently, looking out into the emptiness of the night. It was Walter that broke the silence first, coughing again.
“I don’t want you to cry for me.” He smiled, nudging his shoulder against his son’s. “I know that I’ve caused you… all of you so much pain.”

“Dad-” Tate began, but Walter held up a hand to make him stop speaking.

“Let me finish.” He smiled, looking over at his son again. “I made many promises to all of you, ones that I’ll never get to keep now. Add that on to all the other things I’ve done to fuck up colossally.” A joke, at a time like this, which caused him to wheeze out a chuckle. “Listen to me closely, Tate. Do you remember that ice cream shop I would take you to sometimes? It closed down a couple of years ago and no one has bought the place. Look inside the wall behind the cash register and… take everything that’s inside.” He reached over and took Tate’s hand, giving it a squeeze. “I promised… I promised to give you all college funds. You’re a smart kid, you’ll know what to do with it.” This time he leaned heavily against his son’s shoulder. His voice had gotten so quiet that it was barely above a whisper. “Keep taking care of them…”

His hand slipped from Tate’s as he let out a shallow breath, not taking another one in. Tate swallowed a sob that tried to escape, covering his own mouth. He continued to sit there, feeling the deadweight leaning fully onto him, for several long moments. Just as the sky started to lighten he finally stood up, gently laying Walter down on the bench and closing his eyes as if he were sleeping. He found the first payphone he could and quickly dialed 911, making a report that he believed Leviathan was sitting inside the park before he finally returned home.
