Brief backstory
Emery is Buffy's twin sister (obviously non-identical). When Angel moves to LA, Emery goes to live with her father in LA, but after they have a falling out, she ends up with the Angel Investigations crew. Where Buffy finds her family with the slayerettes/scooby gang, Emery finds it with Angel Investigations.
The twin to a slayer is extremely rare and in cases when that happens, the twin is granted a protective aura to stop them from becoming a burden to the slayer. The powers can also be trained to shield others too but it takes training and focus. Her power can also work in a way that manipulates the behaviour of her enemies, sort of like charm speak. If an enemy does happen to get past her aura (which only really happens when she lets it), they will suddenly feel the urge to do exactly what she tells them to.
Personality and motivation
slow to warm up to people, nerdy, clever, bubbly, deep-thinker, wants the world to be a better place, resourceful, loves music, occasionally sarcastic and times it well, kind (often to her detriment, forgiving too soon), slow to anger, quick to cry.
Emery is pretty opposed to danger and terrible in a fight but since it can't actually hurt her, she feels she can use her brain and help Angel Investigations or the Scooby Gang without them having to worry about her getting hurt.
Familial Relationships
Buffy (twin sister) - They used to be so close, and each other's number one but Buffy becoming the slayer put a strain on their relationship. They both have very different ideas about how to handle things and struggle to agree. They still have each other's backs though, and Emery will always stand up for Buffy when the Scooby Gang mistreats her. Emery also understands that Buffy had to grow up a lot faster than she did when she became the slayer and will always respect her for that, but wishes Buffy could have stayed carefree like she did.
Dawn (little sister) - Since Emery is not around as much as Buffy, she didn't take on a caretaking role with Dawn like Buffy did and her relationship with Dawn is much lighter than Buffy's. They bicker a lot, but also have rare moments where they get along. Dawn sees Emery as her fun older sister and when they're not fighting, she thinks Emery is so cool.
Joyce (mother) - They have quite a close relationship, especially in Joyce's eyes. While Buffy was out slaying, especially before Joyce knew about it, Emery and Joyce would have movie nights or girls nights in. Emery would always feel a little bit guilty though, because her mum would enjoy the quality time without knowing that Emery had an ulterior motive. Also, Emery always felt that there was a lot about hers and Buffy's and Dawn's lives that Joyce would never understand, even without the supernatural side.
Hank (father) - Emery's relationship with Hank is slightly less strained than Buffy's relationship with him but still tense. And it eventually disintegrates when she tries to stay with him in LA, and they have a falling out.
Platonic Relationships
Cordelia (best friend) - While Emery originally did not get along with Cordelia, the two began to grow close in the fallout of Cordelia's relationship with Xander. Emery was already a certified Xander hater so she was happy to provide a listening ear to Cordelia's ranting. Cordelia in turn began to see the value of having a deep friendship with someone, as opposed to her shallow relationship with her popular friends, and her lukewarm relationship with the slayerettes (the main thing they had in common was that they fought monsters together). Being in Angel Investigations together really solidified their friendship.
Giles (father figure) - Just like Buffy and Dawn, Emery sees Giles as a father figure. She loves him deeply and feels completely safe around him. She feels like she can turn her brain off a bit around him, in a way she can't even do around her own mother (and definitely not around her actual father). Giles, Buffy and Dawn are who she misses most when she's in LA and she writes letters to Giles frequently (since he prefers them to email, which is how she keeps in contact with everyone else).
Angel (close friend) - For a while, Emery only thought of Angel as her sister's boyfriend but she grew to love him in her own way. She thinks he's a bit silly but knows his heart is usually in the right place and knows he'll always look out for her, not just for Buffy but because he loves her too. They have a very sibling like relationship.
Spike (close friend) - Upon Emery's return to Sunnydale after Doyle's death, Spike became a sort of confident for her, since she was fighting with Buffy. It started sort of jokingly, Emery complaining to Spike about how annoying Buffy was but then he started complaining back (to which she got defensive and said only she could complain about her sister). But eventually they reached a sort of understanding and began to get close. Emery kept her guard up because Spike didn't have a soul yet but her friendship with him did fast track his desire to get a soul. They got so close that they even thought they might be romantically attracted to each other but quickly realised they were better off as friends.
Doyle (close friend) - Emery and Doyle grew close really fast, and Doyle grew to be quite protective of Emery (more emotionally than physically, as Emery's feelings could still get hurt even if she couldn't get physically hurt). Emery cared very deeply for Doyle and adored him and was crushed when he died. She blamed herself for not having better control over her aura powers, as she could have saved him. They had both been learning to use their respective powers to their advantage instead of letting them just be so Emery doubled down in her self-training after Doyle's death to honour him in the best way she could.
Wesley (friend) - Emery was unsure about Wesley at first, and protective over Cordelia when he had an interest in her. They grew to get along but Emery became wary again when Wesley showed an interest in Fred. Their relationship is a little bit strained because of that but they have enough history together by that point that they try to ignore their differences (or similarities) as best they can for the sake of their relationship.
Willow (friend) - Willow and Emery are very similar. Both nerdy and quiet and took a while to grow into themselves. Both queer. Similar taste in women. Both into witchcraft. When Willow got hooked on dark magic, Emery was worried she too was headed down the same road, but Willow herself eased her fears, something that Emery is eternally grateful for, especially since it would have been so hard for Willow to say in the face of her own struggles.
Anya (friend) - Emery and Anya don't have a super close relationship but they get along well enough and Emery thinks Anya is so cool. She admires Anya's bluntness and also Anya reminds her of Cordelia a bit in that regard, so Emery gravitates to her whenever she misses her best friend. Emery thinks Anya can do way better than Xander but tries not to be too annoying about it to keep the peace between them.
Neutral or Unpleasant relationships
Xander (mutual dislike) - Xander's weird jealousy over Angel and Buffy's relationship never sat right with Emery and she's disliked him ever since. In turn, he's disliked her back.
Romantic Relationships
Faith (BTVS season 3) - A brief but meaningful relationship. Emery's first introduction to dating. A very tumultuous relationship but the feelings both girls have are real and genuine and maybe it would have turned into something more if Faith had not been going through such a tough time
Spike (briefly, BTVS season 5) - It barely counts as a relationship because it was basically over before it had begun. Spike and Emery had gotten close but realised that they were better off as friends when they tried to make it work romantically but it didn't click and felt wrong and awkward.
Tara (briefly, BTVS season 6) - Emery was infatuated with Tara as soon as she met her, and decided to shoot her shot when Tara and Willow broke up. They had a brief love affair that meant so much to Emery but ultimately, Tara decided to get back with Willow and it broke Emery's heart. She was absolutely devastated when Tara died and understood why Willow went insane over it.
Fred Burkle (Angel season 3 & onwards) - Emery and Fred felt smitten with each other instantly but Fred was still recovering from Pylea and Emery had just gone through two emotionally devastating years so they took it slow with their romance and fell for each other over time.
Timeline
BTVS season 3 - Emery is immediately infatuated with Faith. To her surprise, Faith likes her back and they have a bit of a romance. Emery really likes Faith but cracks in the relationship start to appear early on, as the two are very different. When Faith commits accidental murder, Emery desperately tries to get her to talk about it and succeeds a little bit but not enough. Emery is devastated when Faith switches sides.
BTVS season 4/Angel Season 1 - Emery stays with Angel in his "bat cave" as she and Doyle call it. After Doyle dies, she returns to Sunnydale to get over her grief, especially since she thinks its her fault for not learning to project her aura well enough to save him. Angel understands, but Cordelia is mad at her best friend for abandoning her.
BTVS season 5/Angel Season 2 - Emery is in Sunnydale. She's not getting along super well with Buffy because of a fight they had when Buffy went to LA to get revenge on Faith. As a result, she moves in with Spike for a bit to give Buffy her space. She moves back in with Buffy and Dawn when Joyce dies and the three sisters all grieve together. Emery intervenes and stops Dawn and Buffy from dying at the hands of Glory, using her aura powers.
BTVS season 6/Angel Season 3 - Emery takes a bit more time to process her grief and sort things out with her sisters, then returns to LA. She meets Fred, who's just starting to come out of her shell, and they connect instantly. Cordelia rages at Emery for leaving but their relationship is not as complex as Emery and Buffy's so a few yelling matches and a make-up is all they need to forgive each other. Emery settles back into life in LA with her friends and begins to fall for Fred. She also begins to look into basic witchcraft spells so she's not totally useless in a fight.
