At first there was no one but Chaos swirling around and she was lonely.
Everything was dark and impenetrable and nothing existed.
She felt that she was wasteful, untamed;an abysmal,barren woman.
And then Chaos,the first Goddess, decided to spread herself out into the world to give substance to the void.
"If I made someone other than myself then perhaps my terrible loneliness would abate,"she said in her despair.
And that is when she reached inside of her self and brought Erebus screaming into the world.
Erebus suckled at her mother's breast for untold ages ,like a wolf pup,until she finally came to adulthood.
"Mother,"Erebus one day told her,"I look around and there is only the two of us here.Why don't you have another child so that I will have someone to talk to.It's burdensome being an only child, I have nothing to do but stare into the darkness."
"If that's your wish then I will grant it,"said Chaos."It would be nice to have another child running around the house."
And that's how Death was born,the twin of Erebus,out of the inevitable loneliness beneath it all.
One day the two of them were playing with a great celestial egg in a field of poppies when it began to hatch.
"What's this,"they cried in unison,twins to the true,"another is born!"
And from the shell of the cracked egg it was Night which sprung forth as a black horse.
Night was a beautiful steed,as fast as the wynd and as mysterious as the void itself.
For ages the twins rode the wonderful equine across the land and each time was as good as the last.
But over time the horse became withdrawn.
One day when Erebus was gathering flowers with her mother in a basket,Death decided to see whatever was wrong with him.
He searched forever and at last found the dark horse feeding on poppies in a field.
"I'm worried about you,my friend, you've seemed to have gone distant from us.Unburden your woes to me so that I might better understand what ails you."
"You can smell the fragrance of the poppies in the wynd,"said Night."That's why I often come here,to escape my loneliness."
"Yes,"said Death."And the smell of the opiate addle my senses!"
It was when he fell into a deep slumber that Night lay with him and once he awoke there was another being standing before them in a glow of radiance.
It was then that Death realized that Night had deliberately lured him into the poppy field,so that he might cojoin with her.
"Who is this beautiful young woman;sprung forth as though from the Sun itself?"
"She is our daughter,and her name shall be Love,"Night told him.
"But Erebus my twin doesn't know of this,he will be jealous of our union."
"Now you know the reason for my dark misgivings,in foresight of what is to come...."
Indeed, Erebus was so distraught that he shut himself away in a hidden place in the earth and was never seen again.
"Oh,my brother,what have I done!"
And so it was that Death comes to take the ones you love away from you,as in eternal punishment for his betrayal.
