She pressed her face against the car window, cooling her head against the surface. It was nothing. She was over reacting, going psycho – crazy. Why did she have to know? Maybe he had joined a club… that met every Tuesday at 12am. Every Tuesday for two years. Jack had dug the driveway out from snow, made sure holidays ended before Tuesday and even “gone for a walk” when the car broke down.
Sue her, she was curious. Perhaps she was a tad suspicious… and paranoid.
She hated it.
Mia had asked him, gently hinted and offered to drop him off. He had laughed off her enthusiasm, saying he was a “big boy” who was fine getting to work on his own. That was what she was worried about.
She smacked her head against the glass, rubbing her head where a bruised formed from the contact. Following him slowly for the past hour, he had driven through town with regular head checks.
Had she borrowed a friend’s car halfway through so he wouldn’t suspect anything?
Maybe.
Did she almost crash the car in a street lamp because her manual skills weren’t up to scratch?
Now, she sat in a car with no air con watching her husband walk into a dense forest.
This is not looking good, she thought as she shut the car-door and slipped quietly after him. He flicked branches out of his way, intent on his destination. She followed, holding her breath as he led her to a hall like building, coloured to adapt to its surroundings.
He stopped.
Mia felt her breathing hitch as he slowly turned around. Her heart thudded, until it was all she could hear. He stooped to stare at her through the bushes, smiling crookedly at her.
‘Mia, you’re stuck.’
‘I’m not! I’m fi-’ She stopped as she realised thorns had pierced her clothes, unable to tug herself fee.
‘Mia!’ he yelled, running closer, ‘don’t pull-’
Too late she realised dragging resulted in tearing her clothes literally off her body. He clasped his hands over his mouth, stifling something high pitched coming out of his mouth. Her shirt lay in strips in the branches, angry red lines marking her skin where the thorns has run along her flesh.
‘Hey,’ he said gently, coming closer as he pulled off his jumper, ‘I like this bra.’
‘You knew I was following you.’ Mia accused, snatching the jumper.
‘Stealth does not involve smashing into a street lights.’
‘Almost smashing!’
He grinned, laughing at her scowl, ‘I have been waiting for months for you to finally stalk me.’
‘Months?’
He nodded confirmation, taking her hand and leading her closer to the building, ‘months.’
‘What is it?!’ she asked, slipping the jumper over her head.
He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her towards the building, opening the door for her to see inside.
It was all timber, the carpet all different sorts melded together so it looked like quilt work. A small kitchen corner sat at the far back of the room, hidden behind a couch turned towards a projector screen. Book cases ran down the end wall, contrasting against the soft blue walls. It smelt like her perfume. It looked like an extention of her. It was her.
‘You built this?’
‘I did.’
‘Even in the snow?’
Jack turned to her, ‘that was one time! It was snowing and there was no roof!’
She laughed, pulling him closer to wrap her arms around him, ‘you’re perfect…. And sappy.’
‘You said you wanted a space for yourself!’
‘Not in the middle of the woods!’
He griped her hand and pulled her over to the TV, running his fingers over the DVD’s.
‘Original covers!!’ she squealed as Disney movie titles ran down the shelf. She ran to the op shop couch, laughing as it held her weight.
He strolled over to her, obviously proud of himself by the way his chest puffed out. She blushed crimson and patted the spot next to her, watching him take it by throwing himself onto the couch.
She leaned against him, sighing happily.
‘Hey Jack.’
‘Yeah…?’ he asked carefully, ‘no there is no Jacuzzi – thanks for playing.’
She yawned, tired from her stress, ‘I have a surprise too.’
‘What is it sweetheart?’
She smiled lazily, ‘Jacky and Mi-a sitting in an-amazing-Mia-hall K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love. Then comes marriage….’she broke off and glanced intentionally at her wedding ring. She grinned at his startled expression, closing her eyes and curling her fingers into his shirt.
‘You work it out.’
