Heather scrolled through her feed with blank eyes. No sound inside of the room could be heard, other than the clicking of her mouse. Not a single shred of light entered due to the fact that she had blocked her window with countless pillows, and in the dark, her computer screen was the only thing to glow.
Her eyes blinked slowly, her dark eyebags enhanced in the shadows, and her soft breathing slowed down.
Muffled laughter could be heard within her headphones, as she watched another video of people falling off of things. Videos about people taking a spice challenge and crying over the fact that it was to much. Videos about people making fun of others. Videos about pranking people to the point where they never woke up after having fireworks lit under their pillow.
Was this supposed to be funny?
Heather couldn't understand people. The majority of humanity found pleasure in the pain of others, but she didn't find any part of it enjoyable.
With another click of her mouse, she came across a video of muted Syrian children covered in debris. There were countless likes and prayers sent into the comments... countless... millions... but that didn't stop everyone from dying.
Her eyes reflected the computer screen's light, and her lips were white and chapped. Human beings... they were views as creatures blessed by miracles for being intelligent, and above all of other animals. Creatures who were given free will and the power to change the environment to whatever they wished.
Inside of the depths of her mind, she chuckled. How blessed we are, indeed.
More than 10 millennia of death and murder... wars and petty crimes... infidelity and abuse... slavery and human trafficking... how fortunate. Not. 492Please respect copyright.PENANA6X2fFWszpz
What was the point of existing when there was nothing human beings could do but hurt others and themselves? Why love another when love were the thorns on a rose's beauty? Why sacrifice yourself for those who would forget you? Why be happy when there are others having it worse?
There's not a single person who has not hurt another on this planet.
What was the point of living in this horrid existence? Nothing much, really... 492Please respect copyright.PENANAPTlx2c7uQR
We are born, we are raised, we go to school, we make friends until we reach high school, where we are taught the harshness of the world, the unfairness of society, and the abuse of being misunderstood, we suffer through adulthood being forced to work for an imaginary currency that governs the world at the palm of its hand, we work and work and work, are expected to make a perfect family, and then die just like that.
If life was a game... it's a very messed up genre. 492Please respect copyright.PENANANW48UbLv23
"Living in the dark again? Really, girls?" Heather's mom sighed when she took in the room's appearance. "You need a little light from time to time..." it only took her one push to get the fort of pillows to fall apart, allowing the light to barge in through.
Suddenly, high pitched hisses were heard, and underneath the mountain came alight two other girls who had buried themselves in dark solitude.
"The light!"
"It burns! My EYES!"
Heather yelped and retreated to the room's remaining shadows, trying to bring her monitor with her. Her eyes were closed. No way was she going to end up blind.
"Don't forget to eat lunch. I'm going out to buy some chips for movie night! Potatoes chips for you, Heather, and cheese flavor for the rest of us!" Heather's mother left the room in a jolly manner, closing the door for her absence. 492Please respect copyright.PENANAb3RocnytLu
Heather smiled, she liked potatoes better.
She glanced at her sisters, who were writhing in pain under the sun's light, trying to bury themselves once again under blankets.
Out of nowhere she decided to ask, "What's the point of living?"
Their answers were almost immediate. "To die." "To Live." the answers came separately from each sister, but in their minds, all three of them knew that the two answers were one and the same. 492Please respect copyright.PENANAbkyisAM5Jv
"What's the point of our existence in this world?"
"To belong."
Heather laughed, "I guess that's kind of right." after her sisters had blocked the window, she returned her monitor to where it belonged. The two girls went back to their nap, having nothing else to do in the afternoon, while Heather stayed awake. 492Please respect copyright.PENANArw6ZUJVViQ
She was human. That is why she can be broken just as easily as the next person. She wasn't perfect, even though others expected her to be. If Heather was a human, does that mean that she's just as bad as the majority of humanity?
Gluttony... greed... pride... envy... lies... sloth... wrath...
All of this has been done. Does that mean she's going to hell? 492Please respect copyright.PENANAfvxVetPm7s
However... was it a sin to want more love and affection? Was it a sin to have pride in her talents? Was it a sin to rest even because you've already worked for hours on end? Was it a sin to break down and burst into madness after having so much done to you? 492Please respect copyright.PENANAnx30NEd2Zx
If it was... then you all know where Heather was headed.
Heather turned off her computer and dug into the pillows and blankets, finding her sisters in the bottom. With a grunt, she jumped inside of the tunnel and carefully made sure she entered without breaking the mountain. With a satisfied sigh, she snug in between the two of them .
Oh well, that was just life. There's no point in fighting it. Let what will come, come. Perhaps it was destiny, perhaps it was fate. Whatever it was, it's still going to happen anyways. No point in crying over spilled milk. 492Please respect copyright.PENANAgvsCMmBYsd
Heather's eyes were well adjusted to the dark, and she looked at both of her sister's slumbering faces. In her mind she thought:492Please respect copyright.PENANAFiBNJLwKpb
"At least these two furry statues get me." And with that, she fell asleep with a smile.492Please respect copyright.PENANAOI3HNWw0qL
Ignorance was bliss, but it wasn't something that she had. If only people had the same mindset as her. Maybe then pointless wars wouldn't start.
For now... Heather will fight in order to live and to die happily. Let the world settle their own problems, Heather won't get involved in their petty fights. She'll just be one of the people cleaning up the mess, it suits her better.
In a world full of darkness... Heather will be part of the light.
How funny considering she hated the literal meaning of light. Or maybe ironic? She needed to stop thinking so much... it was bedtime... afternoon naps were fulfilling.
