In a far away land there lived a royal family. The family made sure their subjects had plenty but when tragedy took the King, the Queen began to show less heart towards her subjects. Her daughter tried to make up for this lack, only for it to betray her in the end.
One day a magician came to the castle to preform and see if it would lighten the Queen's mood, and unstone her heart. What resulted in happening was the Princess being taken into a doll he presented, a doll that held a mystical stone. The magician vanished into thin air with the doll.
The Queen ordered a kingdom wide search for the magician and demanded her daughter be returned to her safely. Unknown to her was the magician was on his way out of the kingdom, cloaked in dark as night fabric. He patted his bag to feel the doll and picked up the pace until he found his horse, untied its reigns and took off in a quick pace into the falling night.
The Princess managed, during this trip, to make the doll move or at the least walk as she could not release the crystal which held her soul. One night, she wasn't sure how long had passed, she managed to work the flap open enough for her to slip out. She took off into the wilderness to try and find her way home.
Along the way she meets a curious snow fox. During their trip back, the magician learns his doll has fled. He shakes his head and heads back, searching for the doll.
Time has since passed and the Princess see's her kingdom in a disheartened light. Listening to a couple talk she learns the Queen was still ill and left to bed. Fearing she would not see her mother again, she orders the fox to rush to the castle. The fox obeys and they hurry to see the Queen with the magician on their heels.
Inside the castle they get around the guards and staff, finding the Queen's chambers and the fox helps her up onto the bed. Seeing her mother look old and ill breaks her heart. The Queen see's the doll and gives a sad, weak smile. She asks how her daughter has been and apologizes for her behavior. The Princess tells her to conserve her energy and to tell her what is wrong. The Queen explains it is a broken heart and there is no cure. She tells the Princess she must now rule the kingdom and bring it back into the glory it once was.
The Princess explains she is not sure how to do that as a doll. The magician chimes in out of breath that the spell will soon fade. When asked to explain he tells them the spell enchanted on it was to make the Queen see the error of her cold heart. It was to help her see what she had that she could love. Once that love was realized the spell would break on the doll.
Just as he explained, the gem began to glow and soon the doll fell limp and there stood the Princess as she had on that day some years ago. Princess Rosiana took her mother's hand, begging her to live for herself and for the people of their kingdom who are worried for her. The Queen vows to do her best to fulfill this.
For many days after that she was in a wheelchair, explaining and helping her daughter learn what she needed. One day a time later on, the Queen passed away not in bitterness or heartache but joy, a joy she found thanks to the return of her daughter. Rosiana declined to take the title of Queen, explaining a Queen cannot be one without a King to balance her out. So she would remain as the title of Princess until she has found one who could add to the kingdom more than she alone could do.
The Queen was laid to rest by her husband and Rosiana had a festival made on that day to pay honor to her parents, and the rulers of the past. Much rejoicing took place as the kingdom prospered as it once had before the King's death.
