The more attention and love you give your animal, the more may be returned. This is the most work, done daily. Feeding, grooming, walking, communicating, playing, and training.
Your relationship is key to be an animal witch or a wild witch. If no relationship exists, you are simply a witch. You cannot determine such a relationship exists until magic finally results of it. Loving your animal does not mean they love you back. To be loved deeply by an animal is a great honor. This is called loyalty.
Loyalty is a gift you cannot take by force, deceit, or magic. With that said, adopted animals or animals you don't own but care for in the long term have been known to be loyal. Though this isn't a sure thing.
Step three: Meet your familiar in your dreams. This is also the most work, done nightly. Visualizing the animal is easy practice, but to go to bed with a mindset of meeting your familiar and with a certain spell or wish in mind is a delicate action. This is known as a request. You may meet them but end up playing instead, for they are creatures of pleasure and not work.
When your request is heeded and accepted, the familiar may bestow you their traits temporarily the next 24 hours. They may not behave but strange coincidences may occur.
They can bring you luck in unexpected ways, directly or indirectly. It is their magnificent spirit that blesses you. They may bring you people, animals, and items. They may bring you courage or wisdom. They may save your life.
There are special witches, very rare witches, who may grow up without animals in their lives but can glean a weakened animalistic power. This exception to the rule are those who familiarize with images, icons, myths, and symbols of animals such as the Eagle on American money or paleontologists studying dinosaur bones. They are known as fossil witches.
