I don't really remember the first time he came over. Normally he'd tag along with someone when he was over, we wouldn't hang out ourselves and by ourselves, I was a year older, after all. Honestly, he was just a background character or the one we'd nominate as "it" in Hide-and-Seek. Poor guy... we could've been nicer. Well, I guess we could still be nicer. A little bit, at least.
One day, I guess, we hung out ourselves. Or maybe the other company left and he needed to wait for a ride, or maybe his parents came over and he tagged along. I don't remember, I honestly can't. It just blended together and we were friends all of the sudden. 704Please respect copyright.PENANAX4e42v5YdV
There were a lot of things we connected on. We would write, we would play the guitar and sing, we'd escape to my backyard and climb to the roof just to... talk. It was the most simple friendship I'd had in a while. Refreshing, really. Soon, he was over almost 24/7, and we had to communicate to everyone that, "No, we aren't dating," and "No we don't want to date."
Another few months, and we started Skyping when we weren't face-to-face, talking about life's epiphanies and our own problems, draining and leaking our sorrows like drunks. Soon after, he called me, "Sis."704Please respect copyright.PENANAt7OahgPJIj
On his thirteenth birthday he invited me, and only me, to go skiing with his dad. So, my own Dad and I went up to Tahoe to go skiing, talking about the weirdest stuff on the five-hour drive up. It's a tradition now. We ski every day on his birthday, he and I, with my Dad and his. It's fun, and we tease each other on our faulty techniques and how he bombs the hill way too fast and how I'm way to scared to go on anything faster than a grandma's driving. 704Please respect copyright.PENANASpAZnL4MkS
I remember one day on the roof, he just sorta blurted, "Well, I used to like you, you know." Of course, I actually did know. He made it pretty obvious when we were 10 and first met. I had no intention of liking him back, not in that way at least. At the time, I had liked someone else, anyway.704Please respect copyright.PENANAmd55Fid3Yj
So, I replied with something sassy like, "Why wouldn't you like this?" We laughed, then we played some Super Smash Brothers Brawl for the Wii.
That's what it was-- that's what it is. We hang out, as if we're tied together, not caring about our image, or our own sins that we've shared together. We just care for each other. Simple as that. I love him, there's no doubt about it.
It shocked me, when I left for college, that he was the one who cried the most.
