Day one of one! The ninth time I get to certify that a kid is healthy enough to be killed. This job sucks, but it is better than the last one I had. For the record I know that the "surgeons" are perfecting the technique. I also know that the last kid almost survived. What the byte-news failed to mention was that she would have been a complete vegetable and requiring medications to keep her heart beating. In the end she met the fate of the previous seven: ground up into meat. All this writing is making me hungry.
In case this project succeeds and posterity is reading this in the future far enough to forget the present issues, let me explain. In the late 20's and 30's of the twenty-first century giga-corporations rose to power and provided many technological advancements across many fields. Corporations such as the Amazon/Starbucks Combine, Exterra, Apple, GenLife, Up-ore, Priceco, and many others. Competition grew fierce and many countries were controlled or heavily influenced by the "comps". Each company began to hire mercenaries and form armies to protect their assets and disable the others. Apple also began training terrorists to influence public opinion and the others soon followed suit. Soon small wars barely reached news coverage due to the state of the world. America, one of the last free countries, grew desperate when it seemed that there was no end in sight.

The Initiative received funding from all of the founder countries, but soon began to run its own financing operations. Half of the world's technological companies were soon held by the Initiative. Everything from investing in off-planet ventures to secretly replacing rich members of society with body-doubles and rigging elections.
This powerful organization strove to find a final solution. Trillions upon trillions of dollars were spent to attain world peace, and to ensure mankind's survival for the long-term. It was 2038 when an answer showed: scientists had developed a field capable of influencing the human mind. By 2042 field testers determined that it worked with a 100% success rate with zero side effects. the field was dubbed the Tranquility Aura. 2045 saw the launching of satellites carrying aurora generators. July 16, 2045 was the date the generators were activated; it had been one hundred years to the day since the Trinity Nuclear Test.
Three hours after the activation, comps ceased to matter. Humanity had been reduced to savage packs of feral humans. What couldn't be done by animals, fire, war, bronze weapons, famine, disease, gunpowder, poison gas, genocide, and radiation was done in three hours by a signal. what survivors remained after the signal cowered in the wilderness where the signal did not reach, bunkered down in signal-blocking skyscrapers of metal and duracrete. The only bastion of civilization that remained was the underground city Hesperus. Originally build by the U.S. to shield government officials from a nuclear strike, the Initiative seized it for their own purposes. They wanted global peace, and yet were willing to provide for war. Hesperus was turned into a training ground for child soldiers. Pax hoped to develop a force loyal to the end, and most importantly, immune to the aura. The children had been gathered and just completed the indoctrination period when the signal was activated.
