They can only last a certain amount of time and as they create happiness...when they are gone is sad.
I fear many people have lost a dog in their lifetimes, and although is not like losing a family member or a close person, they leave a massive hole in our hearts and yet we remember them with the same warmness and importance any person in our lives has.
Loss is something that everybody encounters it can be in the shape of a dog, a cat or any living being. Even other animals than humans feel loss.

That is of course because we remember the nice moments and we believe they are somewhere better.
So when a dog dies, I believe they encounter us again in any shape...
Death is sad and it is okay to be afraid of it...but just think about it...the dog might be there waiting for you...
