I hummed some old song to myself as I moved around the bedroom. I swiftly put down a tray onto the oak nightstand that stood by her bed. I poured some of the steaming hot tea into two delicately decorated cups, painted on were small roses and a small line of gold. Both my grandma and I had a big love for tea, she used to even make it herself. Back in the time she could still get out of bed. Since I was visiting her today, the home nurse had the day off.
''My dearest.'' She whispered in a croaky voice, her wrinkles being accentuated as she smiled at me. Her breathing tubes made it difficult for her to talk, but she still tried. I loved the nickname she had for me, it made me feel so appreciated. I smiled back shyly in response, cupping my hands around one of the cups.974Please respect copyright.PENANARFGGR3zmro
What used to be a cozy and warm bedroom, was now the exact opposite. All kinds of hospital equipment was set up around her bed, monitoring every little move she made and word she said. This equipment was the main reason she was still alive, it kept the fresh air coming and her heart pumping. The shining white material looked odd against the old creamy blankets and walls, which were also decorated with pink roses. Flowers were another passion of her, roses especially. Every week I spent two hours in the flower garden in front of the house to make sure everything was alright with her loves. Grandma had a view on the front garden, and I wanted to make sure it was always the best.
I looked up from my lap and brought the cup to my mouth, blowing into the cup to make sure she wouldn't burn her tongue if I gave it to her. With both hands I brought the cup to her lips and tilted it so she could drink. Her face lit up when the warm tea flowed inside her mouth. Even though she was old and could barely move a muscle, she drunk the tea eagerly and quickly. I smiled as I pulled back the cup and dried her lips with her handkerchief. As I drank my own tea with closed eyes, she suddenly spoke to me.974Please respect copyright.PENANA7GYbXUgpBf
''Could I ask you a favor, dearest?'' She said softly, barely a whisper. I put down the now empty cup and nodded my head slightly in response.974Please respect copyright.PENANA6h99Sp3R23
''Do you remember that song, one I used to sing to you?'' She asked. I nodded once again. A smile appeared of her face, accompanied by a twinkle in her eyes.
''Ah, I see. It always worked to calm you down. Do you know the words to it?''
''Yes, grandma.'' I replied. She put a hand on my cheek, rubbing her thumb softly across. I leaned into the touch.
''Could you sing it to me, dearest?'' She asked almost shyly, a sweet tone in her voice. How could I say no to that?
''Of course, grandma.'' I replied, before slightly clearing my throat. I wasn't that good of a singer, but she didn't seem to mind as I sung the first couple of lines.
She closed her eyes, letting out a content sigh. My heart slightly broke, seeing her like this. I know that she felt sad inside, and I hated that she felt like she needed to be strong for me and the rest of the family. I finished the song softly, barely able to hear the last words. I wondered if she had fallen asleep, but after a couple of seconds she opened her eyes again.
''Thank you.'' She said, patting my knee softly with her hand. I pressed a quick kiss to her temple, before turning around to bring the tray back to the kitchen.
As I walked down the stairs, I began to feel odd. I felt bad for leaving her alone in her room again, she must have been so lonely all that time alone. Sure, there was always a nurse here to take care of her, but I knew how she was. She didn't like strangers in her house, would keep questioning them. They'd confuse her, because how did they get into her house?
I quickly put away everything on the tray, cleaning up the kitchen a bit. After a couple of minutes, I walked up the stairs again. I raised my eyebrows when I heard a faint beeping sound. My eyes widened as I flew up the rest of the stairs, before breaking into her room.
She still had the same peaceful expression on her face. Her cheeks were flushed pink, and the corners of her lip slightly upturned into a smile. I let out a small sob, before rushing over to the equipment. I tried to fix things, but I wasn't a medic. I had no idea how the equipment worked, or how it had to be plugged in again. Hopelessly, I fell down onto my knees, sobbing into her blanket. My face hit her hand, which was quickly losing it's warmth. It hung loosely over the edge of the bed, the needle that used to be in it was nowhere to be found, nor were her breathing tubes. 974Please respect copyright.PENANALa619PUmyA
''I'm so sorry.'' I whispered, as I hid my face into my hands.
