My eyes snapped open to the sound of shattering glass. Loud yells follow seconds later.
I hear mom on the phone. She's yelling furiously at someone, or maybe herself. I can hear the strained anger in her voice, the frustration and anxiety.
Before I could sit up. Dad's voice bellowed. He was speaking half French half English over the phone to somebody who was clearly making him annoyed.
"Where is he?!... Don't tell me useless shit like that. Dites ce que l'enfer qui est arrive a mon fils. Where the hell is he? Just put 'em on the phone, I'm tired of talking to you."
I then heard Abigail approach quietly. She was asking what was going on. Mom's voice was agitated.
"Go back to bed, your father and I are busy."
"Why? Did Linus not come home yet from his ski trip? We talked yesterday over the phone, he said he'll be back before any of us wake up."
"You talked to him? He answered?"
"Yeah, yesterday." She confirmed.
"Then go get your phone, call him, maybe he'll answer you."
"Why? Is he lost or something?"
"We don't know, just do as I tell you. Go, hurry."
Her footsteps echoed away.
Dad apparently got off the phone, and directed the conversation towards mom.
"Do you know what those brainless directors said?"
"What did they say?" Mom asked anxiously.
The sound of glass scraping the ground distracted me for a second.
I blink once, twice, then quickly tune back in with my parents conversation.
"They said, he and two other kids, were signed out late last night. And so they can't track down someone who isn't their responsibility anymore. What kind of bogus excuse is that!"
"Linus should have been here by now, if he left last night. You don't think--?"
"Non, no. He probably stopped somewhere for the night, with his ami's. We'll wait for the call.Let me try calling..."
A lot of bustling was going on in the other room just then. But instead of getting up to go see what was going on, I stayed and just listened,
Soon, the slow pitter patter of Abigail's feet, entered the room again.
Mom spoke again.
"Well? Did he pick up, what did he say, is he close?"
Abigail didn't say anything for while, until dad's voice interrupted.
"Abby bebe, tell us what happened. What did he say?"
It was then when the house phone rang.
Dad was quick to pick it up and answer.
"It's the state police, he announced.
I could barely hear the phone conversation. Dad wasn't saying anything, and the other line was just mumbles.
"Linus didn't pick up his cell, when I called," Abby told mom abruptly.
Mom groaned, clearly annoyed but then Abby continued.
"Linus didn't pick up, but his friend did. He kept repeating the same thing over and over, when I asked him where was Linus."
"What did he say?" mom asked anxiously.
"He kept saying he was sorry. He wouldn't let me talk."
Then finally I heard the click of the phone turning off.
Everything was silent for the longest time.
And then...
"There was an accident, reported in their name." Dad muttered numbly. "A mile away from the resort they stayed in."
Mom gasped.
"No..."
Dad didn't waste any time though
"We have to go... Now!"
