In the backseat of the car, I watched as dad speeds down route 1 while cursing under his breath. Moms eyes are closed but she's not sleeping.
My little sister and two brothers sit silently beside me. None of them say a word.
I watched as dad pulls over towards the sound of police sirens. The snow is thick around us yet dad drives off the road and plows through the snow covered grass.
Two police cruisers join us and dad stops.
Dad tells us to stay put before exiting the car and approaching one of the officers. We waited for a while, everyone watching dad and the police officers.
One minute, two... Then mom scrambles out of the car when seeing her husband's face fall.
Dad nearly stumbles, clutching onto mom for support.
Then mom falls and no one is there to catch her or dad.
Moms crying. Loud sobs echo through the cold air. I look to my siblings. Silent tears ran down my sister's face. The boys curled around her protectively.
I started to reach over to comfort them all but then mom and dad at the corner of my eye got up and started to walk away.
They were going down the snowy slope to where the actual accident happened.
Curiosity got the better of me. I don't remember leaving the car but I did and suddenly I was following cautiously behind them.
No other thought filled my head as I descended down the hill towards three bodies laying on the snow. Officers cluttered around them but they couldn't block the sudden chill that slowly grew closer.
The sound of ambulance sirens filled the air as they reached the scene, hurdling gurdies out of the trunk.
They were just about to pass me when everything suddenly stopped.
I turned in confusion, eyeing my parents in front of me, frozen in place. The guys with the gurdie have also froze. Soon I realized that everyone in the whole perimeter had froze and it was only me left.
I continued down, passing the gurdie men, my parents, and the officers on parole.
The moment that came next was mine alone as I faced the bodies in the snow.
