Chapter Five- It Comes With A Price
Hex had trouble falling asleep that night. She squirmed beneath her reversible comforter and finally decided to yank the large, fluffy thing off. She stood up and padded across the floor with bare feet and crossed the room to her desk. She’d brought her laptop, the manila folder with the crime scene photos, and the research Bo had printed up to her room. She sat down and began to read through the articles. The first was about Elizabeth Short’s murder, famously known as the Black Dahlia murder case.
Short had been found in an empty lot with a Glasgow Grin carved into her face, and her body had been cut in half. After her death she’d been sodomized. Her nude corpse was found on January 15, 1947. More than 50 people confessed to killing Elizabeth Short, but the case is still unsolved.
The next few pages were photos from the Black Dahlia investigation. Hex pulled out the photos of the bodies of the girls that had been found recently and spread them out beside the pictures of Elizabeth Short’s body. She squinted at the face and drummed her fingers against the edge of the desk. The way the Black Dahlia killer had executed the Chelsea Smile was different from the way that the Copycat Killer had done it. Hex sighed and rubbed her eyes. She picked up a pen and began writing notes on post-its, drawing arrows and sticking them on the photos.
After she had finished with the notes on the similarities of Black Dahlia and the current case, she crept into her computer room and made copies of the photos. She punched holes into the copies and slid them into a binder, then slipped back into her bedroom.
The next article was pertaining to Jack the Ripper. There were photos of each letter that was almost a definite match for him, as well as descriptions of the victims and suspects. Hex copied these as well after making more notes on each of the letters.
The last article had only one photo. It was a picture of the writing on the wall of an apartment, written in lipstick by William Heiren. It said “for heaven’s sake catch me before I kill more I cannot control myself” in shaky script. The color of the lipstick was stark in contrast to the wall, just like the words in blood that the Copycat Killer had written. She scribbled a few more notes and copied the photo before settling into bed again.
Glancing at the clock, she saw that it was just after 3:30 in the morning. Hex pulled the comforter up to her chin and within seconds was asleep. She had no dreams that night, and only slept for two hours before hauling her tired ass out of bed.
She stumbled into the bathroom and glanced at her reflection. She looked like a zombie. Hex grabbed a giant make-up bag and began her 15 minutes of applying makeup that made her look like she wasn’t wearing any makeup at all. Her face looked slightly less haggard and colorless when she was finished. Hex decided to actually try to look decent, especially since Sterling--well, Chris as well--were coming over. She brushed through her hair and applied some lipstick before joining Bo in the kitchen.
“Hey, Hex… why are you wearing makeup?” Bo greeted her. She groaned.
“Is it that bad?” she replied, grabbing a mug and pouring coffee into it. Bo shrugged and gave her a look that said “I’m a guy, how should I know?”
Hex sat on the stool, nursing the mug filled with liquid energy. "Do you know when Sterling and Chris are coming to the house?"
"Nope, they don't talk to me that much. They just want to talk with you most of the time," he replied. She shrugged.
"I guess they do... Is that weird?" she asked.
"I think so, but maybe they don't. I wouldn't know, after all, I'm just the sidekick," Bo replied. Hex raised an eyebrow.
"Oh please, you're my sidekick now?" I don't think so. That role is Bear's. You can be my pet," she said.
"You're making your DOG into a sidekick and I'm your freaking PET?! That's outrageous! Why would I agree to be put on a leash?"
"I'd let you roam around freely. You can't go to the bathroom in my bathroom though. Do your business outside," she teased. Bo choked on his cup of coffee and laughed.
"Remind again why I put up with you?" he asked.
"You just adore me so damn much. That and I have you under mind control," Hex said, rocking back on the stool and grinning. She winked and drained the dregs of her coffee before standing and rinsing the mug.
"Can you rinse mine too?" Bo asked, extending the mug toward her. Hex shook her head and swatted the back of his head.
"Rinse it yourself then make yourself useful. You need to look over my notes I took when I couldn't sleep," she told Bo, then dropped the photocopied articles on the counter and grabbed her bag. "I'll be leaving now."
He raised his hand and waved behind him, already looking over the notes and articles. Hex walked out of the building and then slid into her car and turned the key in the ignition. She hesitated, then turned the car off and then pulled out the originals from her bag and opened it, looking at them again. Black Dahlia, Zodiac Killer, Jack the Ripper, William Hereins. There had to be something somewhere. Some type of connection. Hex would find it, she knew she would.
A/N: This chapter was absolutely a wreck. I'm sorry that I haven't updated this in a long time! I might make this chapter longer a bit later. I'm having some family trouble, but it's a lot better than it was. Thanks for the understanding and support! Sorry again for not updating and going pretty radio silent...
