Hex got back to her house the next morning. Sterling and her had spent all night talking. Chris had gotten home late and they talked about the case for a bit. Hex showed the boys her notes and Chris had repeatedly thanked her for her help before she finally had to tell him to calm down. She had slept on their couch and woken up to Sterling’s cooking. Sterling had always loved cooking and he was talented too. He knew he was skilled with pots and pans too, and took every chance he could to show off. Sterling made omelettes, crepes, and coffee. She had eaten her fill and then said farewell to Sterling. Chris had left before she’d woken up, so she had time to say a proper goodbye to Sterling. She’d stood on the porch for more than 20 minutes before she insisted she leave.
Hex had called Bo as soon as she was home, asking him to come over to her house as soon as he could. In about five minutes, he’d arrived.
“I was already over by your place. I was at the library looking at old newspaper articles,” Bo explained, hugging her shoulders. “What do you want to talk about?”
“Did you know Sterling loved me?” Hex blurted.
“Jump right on in, why don’t you?” Bo responded, raising an eyebrow. Hex felt a surge of irritation over Bo’s snarkiness and jealousy over Bo’s ability to raise one eyebrow. “I knew. I thought you did too. Didn’t you feel the same way?”
“I just found out yesterday! And… yeah, I did feel the same. But you should’ve told me!” she said.
“Well, did you tell him how you felt? What did he say? Are you two in a relationship? How’s it going to work when you two are both really complicated people? Aren’t you not supposed to be in a sexual relationship with someone you work with? Is it wise to be in a sexual relationship with someone that actually knows your really deep dark secrets?” Bo asked, a torrent of questions pouring from his mouth.
“Who said anything about sex?!” she shrieked.
“That’s not answering any of my questions,” Bo sang, teasing Hex. Her face flushed and she examined the table.
“I told him how I felt… well, I more of shouted my feelings at him. And… I don’t know if we’re an “item” but I’d like for that to be the case. I was worried that we’d screw up the relationship we have right now with romance, but I’m willing to take that chance, and I think he is too. And this relationship is not purely sexual, so before you make this dirty, just know that we’re both civilized people with proper etiquette,” Hex said in a rush.
“I’m not making this dirty… this was absolutely filthy before I even arrived at the scene,” Bo replied, accenting the sentence with a wink. Hex reached over and shoved him off his chair. “What the hell was that for?!”
“That was for being a slimy man skank,” Hex replied, grinning at him. Bo sighed and scrambled onto his chair again.
“So, you and Sterling?” he said.
“I… um, yeah. Yeah, Sterling and me,” Hex said, smiling and swaying lightly on the chair. Bo grinned and nodded.
“I knew this would happen. I so called it,” he said, poking her in the side. Hex shrieked and tried to swat his hand away laughing.
“Stop it, Bo! I’m ticklish! You know that!” she shrieked, laughing. Bo wrapped his arms around her torso and pulled her off the seat. She bent her legs, laughing hysterically. Bo set her on her feet and continued to tickle her. Hex giggled like a 4 year old and squirmed about. She was breathless from her snorting and fits of laughter. Bo stopped tickling her and she sat up, breathing hard. Hex cracked up and Bo stared at her before beginning to laugh as well.
“I… haven’t laughed… that hard since… well, I can’t even remember. Thanks,” Hex said, gasping out the words and then glancing at Bo sideways.
“That was really fun. We should laugh like that more often. We need it,” Bo told Hex, pulling her into a hug. “You know that you’re the closest I have to family right? And that when you feel like crap, I feel like crap too? I want to see you smile more often. I think Sterling can do that for you, in all honesty,” Bo told her. Hex rested her head on his shoulder and he tilted his head so it was resting on hers.
“I think he can make me happy too,” she said quietly, smiling. “We should probably get back to investigating serious business. Lives are on the line, we should get going.”
“Alright, boss. Are Chris and Sterling coming to the house?” Bo asked. Hex nodded.
“They’ll be here at noon,” she replied.
