There are many names for them, however "The Outsiders" is the name of those who have actually had the chance to meet them. Their power is vast, surely surpassing that of humans. People of old had claimed they resided in the sky. Others claimed they inhabited everything, their presence felt in the wind, oceans, and fire. Some even claim they walk among us, ignorant of their true nature. But their true existence is somewhere outside of our realm. A realm of great mystery. As mysterious as their desires and interest in our world.
Every century or so, one who is of our world is born, charged with a special purpose. The purpose to seek those willing to receive the gift from one of these great entities. This gift we call "magic." These people, known as the "Frikli," tend to live longer than other natural human beings, one of several "blessings" from the entity that chose them. Such blessings are only a fraction of what the gift of magic offers. Nevertheless, it is considered an honor to be Frikli in the magic society. Some Frikli roam for centuries and throughout the entire earth until they come across a someone worthy. One being worthy ultimately depends on their Outsider's wishes.
Over time, there were many ways of how humans have come across the Frikli. Within the hollows of ancient trees in forgotten forests, medieval villages, or even in the basements of abandoned buildings in a busy city. They tend to keep out of the public eye. Historically, they have often been perceived as evil by most cultures. Cursed, demonic and dangerous are just a few words used to describe them, their masters, and the receivers of the gift. Secret organisations exist that work to extinguish the Frikli, for fear of the potential destruction magic users carry. Though, not all magic users are evil. In fact, some have used their magical abilities for good, healing and helping humanity. But alas, the weight of fear is heavy, and the use of magic must be limited to prevent chaos.
Now, all humans may have their deep desires. Desire and satisfaction within the human soul produces an energy that the Outsiders feed of off. This feeding does no harm to the human magic user them self, rather a pleased Outsider will give their gifted human more power in return. Thus, those with great desires or the ambitious are the ones who are likely to be chosen and encounter the Frikli.
Here's an example of a magic user:
There once was a king by the name of Florian. He was a good king. Didn't over tax his subjects, fair and just, loved by almost everyone. Though, his brother, Simon, had always hated him, jealous of the love and attention he received. One day, while Simon was out hunting, he came across a grotto underneath a great, old tree in the middle of the forest. In it he could see was a small campfire. Within, was an old, skinny man wrapped in dusty travel-worn robes, but with gold and silver rings on every finger and toe. He said he was a Frikli, by the name of Dethias. He giggled and took Simon's hand and told him he had traveled for two-hundred and fifty-six years and that his journey was at an end. He then asked Simon if he desired the throne and a "power" that no any normal man could match. Though he thought this was foolishness and a waste of time, something deep in his heart made his mouth utter "Yes." Dethias smiled, and glowed, burst into blue flames. Simon saw it happening to him, as well. All he could see was the bright flames all over his body, but it did not hurt him. He then realized he was not in the tree anymore, but floating in some bright space. Before him was his Outsider, a giant bedecked with jewels and dressed in fine robes. He sat on throne, looked to be made out of diamonds, and floating above his head, which itself was a ball of blue flame, was a shining crown that glowed brilliantly. Simon's body was destroyed, but then rebuilt. His new body surged with a mystic power. He and his new form returned to the realm of humans, within the grotto. However, Dethias was nowhere to be found, gone from this world, his purpose served.
Where do Frikli's go after they have completed their quest? Some say their souls rest eternally in a paradise beyond our realm, constructed by the Outsiders, to reward them for fulfilling their task. Other's say they are absorbed into the magic user they sought out, a medium between the magic user and the Outsider.
Now, how the magic is used depends on the user's personality and desire. In Simon's case, his Outsider allows him to use magic that relates to manipulating the minds of creatures. After all, mind control and trickery aid one in "winning" the minds of the people, especially certain nobles. Another magic technique at his disposal was alchemy. The nobles wondered how Simon obtained the money to hire legions of mercenaries in such a short amount of time. With little bit of focus and training, Simon was able to change a fist full of pebbles into a fist full of little gold nuggets.
Of course, a magic user does not start off as an ultimate being capable of bringing the world to its knees on the first day. If Simon wanted to turn all his countrymen into mindless zombies that served him and only him, he would start out trying to get into the mind of a rat and have it steal a piece of cheese for him. It takes training and dedication to the Outsider to become a proficient and powerful magic user.
