Winter, Spring, and Autumn. Those were the seasons that Arlan Heinz Alegres had never tried before. After all, he came from a country of eternal summer. The coldest things would get was during the 'Ber' months, and it consisted of struggling to get the window closed as a storm raged through or walking through flooding streets.
So, when Arlan stepped out of Taipei's airport and felt the cold breeze of August, he immediately wished that he had bought clothes for cold weather. He should've waited inside of the building instead of curiously going outside.
A feminine voice called him over in English. "Arlan! Arlan! Over here!" her voice had a thick accent. When he turned, he found a Taiwanese woman with blonde hair and glasses waving excitedly. Her name was Ing-Wen.
Exactly one year ago, he had met Ing-Wen as a foreign student in Taiwan. After working hard, he managed to be selected as one of the Senior High School students who would be able to see the opportunities one can get when studying in a Taiwanese college. She was their guide at the time.
How fascinated he was with the place. The moment he had tasted a world outside, he was immediately captivated. He thought the moment that he arrived: I will come back and study here no matter what.
Now, one year later, the same spot that he thought those words, he came back not as a Senior High School student, but as a 1st year college student who has yet to start their semester.
With only his white, long-sleeved shirt, baggy jeans, and old converse shoes, Arlan tried to control his hair away from the wind, and waved back at Ing-Wen with the same amount of enthusiasm.
"Ing-Wen!"
The small clouds were littered all over the sky, but still, some of the sun's rays were able to make it to his brown eyes, making it shine into gold.
Today, was the start of a new chapter of his life. A chapter where he would realize that the price of independence was the desperate want to see his family again. A chapter where he would realize that without money, one can't move forward as easily as others. A chapter where he would realize that hard work can only get you so far.
And... a chapter where he realizes what it means to meet a beautiful soul.
