As I walk across the bathroom towards the shower, I pass a little square mirror. I know I must look terrible so I try my best not to look but fail as I quickly glance to the side and spot my reflection in the mirror. My jaw drops and I groan, It takes a good few seconds of staring to accept the fact that this hobo looking creature in the mirror is actually me.
I stand there for a few moments, studying myself in horror. Why didn't anyone tell me what I looked like! Feeling super embarrased I look away, determined now more than ever to get clean and feel more like myself. No wonder Mason thought I was dragged through the bush backwards
My hair, which is almost always in a neat-ish bun ontop of my head, is now sticking out awkwardly at all different angles. Most pieces have been pulled from the hair band altogether and just hang awkwardly down the sides of my face.
My skin is covered with a thick mixture of blood and dirt, and my clothes are full of small holes and rips. Probably from mine and Jillian's great escape through my back yard. I can't stop a small grin from spreading at the memory of Jillian's plump figure scrambling up the wall.
I quickly take off my dirty clothes and jump into the shower. The smell of apple shampoo fills the hot hair around me as I allow the steaming water to run down my body while I work the shampoo and conditioner through my thick my mop of hair.
The more I relax the more my thoughts seem to buzz to life. The one alarming question that's been sitting in the back of my mind since this whole thing started is itching for attention. What happened to the priest? I hate lying to these people who've been so good to me but, would they be helping me if they knew it was me who physically pushed him the moment the demon left his body? What happens when he's reported missing and they find that my house was the last place he went?
Like a coward, I shove the thoughts away. I'll make sure to bring it up soon, we need to find where he was taken, asap! With that, my thoughts wander to Jillian. Oh Jillian, I wonder what she's up to. I'll ask Mason to take me there a little later to chat to her, after we review the footage. I gulp, trying to silence my mind as I rinse the soap from my body and hair.
Stepping out, the sharp change from hot water to a cold breeze on my wet skin makes me shudder a bit as I wrap a fluffy grey towel around my body and walk towards the window, taking a deep breath of fresh air. The smell of rain on hot tar fills the air as a breeze gently drifts through the window, bringing with it the promise of rain.
Huh, it looked like it was going to be such a sunny day. Now the clouds that are rolling towards us look dark and menacing.
Oh well, I've always preferred the dark clouds and rainy days. The way the light radiating from a fire glows and dances on the pages of a book as you sit on a beanbag in front of it. Along with the smell of the hot cup of coffee next to you as you lose yourself in another world with nothing but the soft sound of raindrops crashing into a window close by.
Compare that to bright, sunshine filled days where everyone is sweaty and irritable. If you don't have a pool, fan or aircon you're doomed to spend the rest of your day laying on the tiled floor in your undies until the heat stops being an asshole and let's you breathe..yeah. it's going to be a better day today.
I quickly dry myself and put on the clothing Felicia and Danny gave me. The skirt feels a bit tight, but rather that than have it fly up at the tiniest hint of wind! I've had that, trust me. You don't need that level of embarrassment in your life!
I pull a brush through my hair, expecting a crap load of knots but am pleasantly surprised to find only a couple, and it takes me no time at all to brush it out and pull it into a high ponytail. Once I put my sneakers on I make my way back to the twins' room.
The moment I step in I see that both girls are in deep conversation. Danny's face is scrunched up in concentration as she studies Felicia, who has her back to me with her hands on her hips. Unsure of what to do, I just stand there in the doorway, playing with my fingers, trying not to listen as I wait for them to finish up.
I don't have to wait for long. Not even a minute later, Danny's eyes land on me. Slowly a smile starts to make it's way onto her face, stretching so wide that if she didn't have ears I swear it'd wrap around her head! I give her a small tight smile, suddenly feeling a little self conscious in this shirt skirt as she pokes Felicia and points at me.
She spins around, and when she sees me her eyes go wide and her mouth opens slightly before she too gives me the cheeky grin. Looking at them like this, you can see they're twins, they even have the exact same smile. Felicia walks forward, her heavy boots thumping hard on the wooden floor as she makes her way over to me.
"Oh my God. You look amazing! Maybe if we took the pink out though and put a..." "Nope! Hold up there, Sister. We agreed on this and she will stay in this!" She says as she walks forward, joining her sister in front of me. "You look beautiful! Wait until Mason se..oomph! Ow!" "Shut up." Felcia tells her twin through a smile and clenched teeth. What was that about?
Danny glares at her before clearing her throat and looking back to me. "Come on, let's put a bit of make up on, you look a little tired." She says, leading me towards the dressing table on her side of the room.
She picks up the powder but before she can slap it on my face, I gently grab her wrist. "Uuh, no thanks. I think I can manage." Danny smiles and hands me the powder which I put down in favour of liquid foundation. I carefully apply the runny liquid which matches my skin tone perfectly. After that, I add a little blush, mascara and eyeliner. I don't even reach for the lipstick on the table, I hate the way that stuff feels on my lips.
The question I've been dying to ask is right on the tip of my tongue. I open my mouth, and close it again, losing my nerve at the last second. Stop being so stupid, just ask! Just pretend you're merely curious. I open my mouth again, determined to speak, but when I meet Felicia's eyes in the mirror I close it again and sigh.
"Spit it out." She says casually as she leans on Danny's cupboard, still watching me through the mirror. My heart starts beating faster but I control my movements and breathing, acting as if nothing's wrong. "I have no idea what you're talking about." I say casually, making sure my voice doesn't get too high.
"Stop talking shit, I can see you want to say something, so go ahead." I sigh and frantically look for something to keep myself busy with. Looking between the lipstick and the eyeshadow I decide to go with eyeshadow, at least I'll be able to keep one eye closed when I ask. I pick up a small purple brush and swipe it along a beautiful golden brown colour and close my one eye.
I pretend to be in deep concentration as I try my best to casually ask. "So, are you and um... I mean, you and Mason, you're like, together right?" Ugh, way to sound so high school, Kayla! I barely got a chance to glance back at her to guage her reaction before she started laughing. Not just any type of laugh. It was a laugh that came from the pit of her stomach. She bent over, holding her middle as she waved her hand in front of her.
My face heats up as I turn around to stare at her. "What's so funny?" She doesn't reply as Danny walks forward, trying not smile as he says."Oh, Honey. First of all, Mason doesn't date. He's had one girlfriend before and well, it didn't work out so well, that was nine years ago.
Secondly, we're his step sisters!" She says giggling. "Wait, wait, wait." Felicia says between breaths. "Why did you think we were together?"
I shift uncomfortably as they both look at me, waiting for my reply. I look down and start playing with my fingers, squeezing each one as I go. A nervous habit I picked up when my parents died and I was brought in for questioning at 8 years old.
"Well, he's just always smiling at you, and you're the one he sits next to in front and..." "Hey!" Danny interrupts, putting her hand over her heart, acting extremely hurt. "He smiles at me too, and the only reason she gets to sit in front is because we lost a bet and she won shotgun for a month."
Oh, oops. I giggle nervously as she places a hand on my shoulder. "Well there we go, I'm glad you got that off your chest. Just a warning, though, he doesn't get attached. He may care for you as a friend eventually but, never more. Just don't go rushing towards someone who's just going to break your heart, okay?" She squeezes gently before letting go and turning around.
"Come on, guys. I'll go tell them we're ready." She tells us as she walks towards the door, still giggling to herself.
