The moon shown high and bright that night. The silvery light filtered through the full limbs of the trees, casting grotesque shadows on the forest floor.
A homely cottage sat deep in the forest. Despite it being late, a small child waddled through the trees in front of the house, not a care in the world. A cold wind chilled the forest, swaying the branches.
The small girl suddenly whirled around, her wide blue eyes scared. She had seen something. A shadow. The hairs on her neck stood up and her arms were covered with goosebumps.
“Juniper!” Shouted a woman’s voice.
The toddler no more the five years old hobbled over to her mother’s voice, stricken with unmeasurable fear. The child’s mother, non-the wiser of the shadows looming over her child, called out her name once again. She wrung her apron hanging on her thin frame, hoping that Juniper would be alright. She let go of the cloth and started outside, her gaze scanning the dark clearing for her child.
Meanwhile, the small girl ran. The uncontrollable fear in the pit of her stomach growing. More shadows loomed threateningly above her. They wouldn’t hurt her. They were just roaming about as they were instructed to do, but the life force of the child was so strong. It took all it had in those shadows to stop themselves from feeding upon the child.
“Juniper dear!” The distraught mother said, panic in her voice.
A low guttural growl sounded in the shadows of the trees, it’s yellow eyes glinting with menace. The toddlers large owl-like eyes widened as a large wolf stalked toward her. “JUNIPER!” Her mothers voice screamed, a terrible feeling in her stomach. The child knew nothing else except to cower in fear at the beast. A sound like a laugh came from the depths of the wolf’s throat, sending a shiver down the child’s spine.
The giant wolf pounced on the child, it’s claws raking her face. The toddler let out a high-pitched scream of pain echoed throughout the forest. The shadows looming around the child, watching as the wolf attacked, drifting away at the sheer fear and pain in the scream.
“STUPEFY!” A jet of sparks hit the beast as it had been about to chomp down on its prey. The wolf’s body went rigid and it hit the earth with a thud. The child wailed in pain as her mother scooped her up from the ground, murmuring things like “It’s gonna be ok” and “Oh my baby girl”.
“I can’t—I can’t see!” She squealed. The mother pressed her finger to the toddlers mouth, coaxing her to quiet down for fear of any other creatures finding them. She ran into the house.
“Gideon!” She hollered. “Help! HELP!” The child’s father rounded the corner, his blue eyes widened with panic. His panic only seemed to grow as he saw the claw marks on his daughter’s face.
“What happened?” He gasped as he knelt beside his wife and his child.592Please respect copyright.PENANAmWyozjGR6Z
“She wandered out—couldn’t find her—attacked,” the mother sobbed. She studied the child’s wounds. They weren’t deep cuts. She wondered why the beast had attacked her without the intent to kill, for if it had, then there was no doubt in her mind that her daughter wouldn’t be here at her side.
“—she can be treated at St. Mungo’s,” The father continued.592Please respect copyright.PENANABWvQO55qyt
“Yes, Yes,” she agreed, barely hearing her husbands words.592Please respect copyright.PENANAsWvvK9BYo0
“I’ll apparate her,” he said. “Meet me there,” he instructed, his voice grave. He scooped the child’s in his arms and disappeared with a distinctive CRACK! 592Please respect copyright.PENANAp6J1OL1RqX
