Ugh, little brothers!
Locking the door, I turned and saw my reflection in the mirror. My body was pale and thin as always, but for a change, my navy blue eyes were dull. I sighed and ran a hand through my tangled hair before turning the water on. As I let it warm up a bit, I stripped from my purple pajama pants and white tank top. I stuck my hand under the water, checking the temperature before stepping into the tub, letting the steamy water wash away my tiredness.
I poured some strawberry scented shampoo into the palm of my hand and lathered it into my hair and rinsed. Doing the same with matching conditioner, I climbed out of the shower and wrapped myself in a fluffy, white towel and walked into my room. Opening my closet, I began to scavenge to try and find all the pieces of my favorite outfit. I wiggled my way into the dark gray jeans and slid the black tank top over my toned stomach, finishing it off with a dark, washed out, mid-sleeve denim jacket.
I walked back into the bathroom and applied my usual dark purple eye shadow and eyeliner, making my eyes pop. For some unknown reason, dark colors always look good on me. I have never been able to pull off the light colors, but that has never bothered me. Making my way back down the stairs, I saw Dad and Noah eating at the table.
"Now did you two really have to yell?" Dad asked us as I crossed the room.
"Yeah Dad, we did," Noah replied looking at him like he grew two heads. Rolling my eyes, I leaned on my hands as they're placed against the table.
"Oh look. It took a girl a shorter amount of time to get ready than it did a boy. How sad."
Noah scoffed. "That's because you barely even cleaned yourself you pig."
"You know, its not nice to talk about yourself. I thought Mom taught you that already. Guess not." I shrugged and sat down, the corner of my mouth twitching into a small smirk of victory. From the side, I could hear dad sighing.
"Now, now. Save the arguing for later you two. Carrie, you ate already right?"
I laughed. I mean, I couldn't help it. "Yeah Dad, of course I did. If I cooked, of course I'm going to eat."
He smiled at me, eyes crinkling at the edges just like always. "Just making sure. Okay, Noah put your plate in the sink and you two meet me in the garage."
"Yeah, we know the drill," Noah replied in a bored tone, putting his plate in the sink as I grabbed my black Converse and laced them up. While finishing my first knot, Noah joined me as he slipped on his red and white sneakers. He sighed nosily beside me and I glanced at him.
"I hate school. If someone blows it up, he or she would be my hero."
I snorted in amusement. "No kidding." After tying my final knot, I grabbed my shoulder bag and turned back to face him. "Come on. If we don't go to him, he will come to us." I started to walk out to the garage and I see out dad sitting in the car, pointing at his watch. I groaned and jogged down the stairs and flung myself into the passenger seat.
Noah shortly followed, sliding into the back and Dad started the twenty minute drive to the school. It's a combined middle and high school so Noah and I constantly ran into each other. Some people think it's stupid to combine the youth with the young adults, but the school district says its more convenient. I had no idea how, but I guess I couldn't argue with the school system.
We parked in front of the school and I grabbed my bag, exiting the car before slamming the door closed. Dad rolled down the window as Noah climbed out and stood next to me. "Call me to pick you guys up alright?"
I rolled my eyes and nodded. "As always." Anxious to get away, I started to turn, but apparently, he wasn't done talking.
"Love you both and stay out of trouble. You hear?"
Stay out of trouble? Little fits of laughter escaped between my lips. "Yeah, no promises there, Dad. Love ya!" And I bolted toward the school doors, getting ready for the day ahead of us.
