It was this afternoon that it happened. My brother Ohamma had fought with one of our classmates and he had beaten him severely. My brother was a bit big and fat, so he usually never felt intimidated.
Obinna, the boy he fought with, took his math notebook, and when Ohamma caught him, foolish Obinna, thought he could bully him. Ohamma then pushed him and took his book back with anger and force. Obinna landed on the bare tiles in our class. Obinna then stood up to face him.
"Why did you push me, eh? You think you can surpress me just 'cause you are fat?" Chibuike said slapping him.
Ohamma pushed him in anger. Obinna stood up and was about to hook him a punch, but Ohamma, fully alert, covered his face with his arms, then took Obinna by the collar and pushed him once again to the floor, then bent over and started punching him. When students saw that it won't end well, that things were about to get ugly, separated them. Ohamma's breast pocket tore in the process. Obinna stood up in defeat, but Ohamma gabbed him and dragged him to the wall.
"See what you've done?" He said pointing at his pocket. "Lekwe Ihe I mere. Fix this now."
I've never heard Ohamma speak Igbo before unless when he was angry.
"I did not tear your pocket," Obinna said, "so leave me."
Obinna made an attempt to go, but Ohamma's grip was too strong.
"Fix this now, or you'll go home with injuries allover," Ohamma said angrily. My classmates dragged Ohamma away and started praising him. Then Ohamma laughed and that was how everything ended. No one else except for me and my classmates knew about the fight.
We had Afang soup with swallow at evening. Me and Ohamma always had the biggest share because dad said we were still growing. Chibuike, the eldest (I had 3 siblings before him, so he was the same as me and Ohamma, he was still growing too).
Ohamma and I attended the same secondary school. We atte ended Delight secondary school Orji, IMO state Nigeria.
I had a fight with Obinna at our short break. I was copying my basic science note when he took out the fish in his food and put it on my face. I warned him to stop but he would not listen, so I took out my water bottle and threw some water to his face.
"I bu onye ara? Are you mad?" He said and slapped me. That slap alone was enough to make me go mad.
I stood up from my chair and slapped him back, then we started fighting. The fight stopped immediately it started. Obinna really liked fighting.
My classmates encouraged me and told me that I could've beaten him like the way Ohamma did. Ohamma is different from me because he was big an fat and could often use his weight on people and he was also very strong.
Ohamma woke me up early on a Sunday morning.
"Get up and change," he said. "It's Sunday, remember?"
He said it as though I didn't know it was Sunday.
I went to my waldrope to get my clothes I would wear for church. Then I turned to Ohamma.
"Is everyone else up?" I asked.
"Yes," Ohamma replied.
I stretched and yawned. My red Sunday dress still on my hand. Then I turned back to Ohamma.
"Go, I need to change," I said. Ohamma was already on his church clothes.
"Alright," he replied and left my room and shut the door behind.
I Placed my church cloths on the bed. Those were the new clothes dad had bought for me last Saturday. I then removed my night dress, a sleeveless blue gown and tied my towel around my waist, then I went to the bathroom. 507Please respect copyright.PENANA9bTOeDqdwc
I took my brush from my toothbrush holder and started brushing with a toothpaste (I still don't know why I brushed with my towel on), then pulled of my towel and fell into the bath (which was already foamy with warm water and soap).
I sank myself in, letting all the old things pass away. Church was going to be fun, I knew that.
After some minutes, I got up from the bath and dried up my body. Then I went to my room and changed into my red Sunday dress. Then I got to the living room.
Everybody was already there waiting for my arrival.
"What were you doing in your room, eh?" Chibuike asked, "we could've been late."
Dad came from the living room.
"Chioma. What kept you asleep?" He asked suspiciously.
"Nothing," I replied.
He stared at me as if I was hiding something. But I did not mind. Minutes later, we were in dad's car and off we went to the church.
