“Be sure to apply this every night before going to bed for best results. You should be fully healed within the week.” A nurse had given Dorian a bottle filled with an antibacterial salve. “If you experience any symptoms from possible long-lasting poisons, be sure to go to your local hospital for treatment. Have a good day.” The nurse quickly left the small room Dorian was in, away from the chaos of what had just happened less than an hour earlier. As soon as the nurse had left, Miriam entered the room, looking over Dorian. “Well, looks like you didn’t need any stitches or any serious treatment. That’s a shock considering how many cuts you received.”
Dorian nodded, looking at the bottle of salve. “I’m surprised too. I thought for sure that there were some pretty deep cuts, especially with how much some of them were bleeding, but thankfully there weren’t any deep enough that the doctor thought warranted further treatment.”
“I see. Well, I’m glad I got there in time before they could do some serious damage. You weren’t joking about that guy being extremely quick however. I wouldn’t have believed you, but considering your wounds, I’d be a fool to doubt you. Though, what caused him to be so quick?”
Dorian shrugged. “I really don’t know. HIs body type isn’t one that naturally supports quick speed, but at the same time, we can’t discount the possibility that there were some…supernatural aspects at work. Those black eyes for example…”
Miriam nodded. “Those eyes aren’t something I’ll ever be able to erase from my memory…his eyes didn’t have ANY whites to them! What in the world did he do to get his eyes like that?”
“Any leads into his identity?”
Miriam shook her head. “The agency is just now sending their investigative teams, and considering that we just now found out about a cult that’s threatening national security, it won’t be easy trying to figure out his identity, but I’ll keep you in the loop. That also leads me to what I was told to ask you from the chief just now.”
“...this should be interesting.”
Miriam smirked before continuing. “He wants you to keep an eye for cult activity in Westwich, more specifically, in the academy itself.”
“Why…would he be concerned about that?”
“That document that you saved from the fire? Well, there was mention that someone with a position of power in Westwich is a member of the cult, one of the founders actually. With news of what happened just now being disseminated to the public, a full-blown response from the military or even the intelligence agency would cause panic, and alert the cultist that we know of their existence. Instead, we can have you in the area as a simple student. Even though you helped stop that kidnapping, it’s been reported by Iona that I was the one who was to stop the man and kept your identity secret. While you study and train, you can keep an eye for cultist activity right under their noses. I know you’re not an official agent of the agency, but you’re the only civilian we trust that we believe can pull this off.”
Dorian sighed. “You do realize that if I’m caught, my classmates, and the entire academy for that matter, will be a target for this cult.”
“We are well aware of that, and I’ll have to come up with a response should that happen, but I have confidence that you’ll be able to pull it off without anyone being aware of what you’re doing. You’ll be reporting to me, and I’ll only be telling the chief about what you’re up to. You won’t have to worry about any leaks on our end. Plus, considering your skills, do you really believe you’ll be caught?”
“I was caught once. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here right now.”
Miriam chuckled. “True, but that’s also because you had to deal with the three of us. Not many people stand a chance against an unstoppable force.”
Dorian rolled his eyes and shook his head. “Riiight…and unstoppable force…”
“Well, we stopped you did we not? Your skills are top notch though, except this time, we’ll be supporting you and not opposing.”
Dorian sighed before nodding. “Fine, I’ll accept the task, but only because I’ll be reporting to you. I trust you. I don’t trust the chief as far as I can throw him, but I know you’ll keep him in line.”
Miriam smiled and nodded. “I’ll be sure to report that you’ve agreed. I’ll get in contact with you later with the details about what we want you to do, but until then, just focus on training and healing. Now, how about we get out of this room and back to your classmates? They’ve been pretty worried about you ever since you left them to chase after the kidnapper.”
Dorian nodded and stood up from the bed that he was sitting on. “That’s probably a good idea.” As they began walking out of the room, Dorian winced as the stinging from some of the wounds reemerged as he began walking. “So, what about our kidnapper? Has he been talkative?”
Miriam shook her head. “No, he hasn’t. In fact, he hasn’t said anything other than, ‘Nurus will rule all.’”
“Just like what our hooded man said before his death…any idea what this ‘Nurus’ is?”
“I have no idea, and neither does anyone that I’ve talked to in the agency. However, we’ve only just begun our investigation. After some time, we’ll hopefully have some more info, but for now…we have way too many questions rather than answers.”
