Chapter 2: We meet again
Professor McGonagall greeted me in the hallway the next morning. We walked into the Great Hall for breakfast, I used this moment to ask if it were possible to sit at a different house table. I wanted to sit with Neville and I didn't feel comfortable enough with the Hufflepuffs I'd met yesterday. But before she could answer she was interrupted by a cheerful Cedric Diggory.
"Larsa!" He exclaimed feigning disappointment and grabbing my arm. Startled and my face turning red, I looked at him wide-eyed. "Now, why would you want to sit at a different table? Does house pride mean nothing to you? He shook his head. "No need Professor, I will help her adjust." He grinned, pulling me towards the Hufflepuff table. She nodded approvingly and walked away in response. "C'mon, sit down." He patted the open space next to him.
I took the seat. "You know, you're kinda pushy."
"In a good way?"
I scrunched my face. "I guess."
He bumped my shoulder happily. We chatted and ate breakfast. Cedric was easy to talk to and bubbly. He offered to walk me to my first class. I accepted.
My first class of the day was Divination with Professor Trelawney. When I entered, the kooky professor with gigantic glasses rushed over to me and addressed me enthusiastically, "I'm so glad you are here dear. I have a good feeling about you." She pointed a shaky finger at me.
"Thanks." I smiled, feeling awkward.
"OH," she stopped and exclaimed, "Now, Draco will have a partner, finally!"
My jaw dropped looking over to the boy who's expression matched mine. She grabbed my arm and pulled me across the room to an empty seat in the front of the class. She urged Draco to join me. He begrudgingly left his two friends, stomped down the steps, and slid into the seat across from me. Professor Trelawney, satisfied, walked away to begin the class.
"Hi." I blurted.
Draco sat up from his slumped position and replied cooly "Hi USA".
I half-laughed in response. He smiled.
"You never got a chance to introduce yourself," I stated referencing our previous conversation.
"I assume you already know who I am.'' He gave a cocky grin.
I rolled my eyes. "For the principle of it then."
"Alright, I'm Draco. Draco Malfoy." He extended his hand.
I took it. A jolt of electricity ran through me. Even though his hands were cold, I felt warm.
"Charmed."
I was on my way to Transfiguration when the staircase came alive. I gripped the rails and frantically looked around searching for help. No one. Not a soul in sight. I almost jumped out of my skin when I heard a voice. I scanned my surroundings until I noticed a peculiar woman in a painting waving to me. Peculiar only because she had a strong mustache. "Don't worry girl just stay put until it chooses its place." I nodded and thanked the woman. The stairs eventually stopped moving. Their "place" is in the opposite direction and on an entirely different floor than where I was headed.
"This place is insane," I whispered to myself exiting the stairs as quickly as possible.
Now, entirely stressed I sped walked through the halls trying to get to my class. I turned the corner and smacked into a body, sending the contents of our arms into the air, papers now scattered on the floor.
"Shit. Sorry." I apologized, quickly bending down to retrieve my things.
"Idiot Hufflepuff." An angry girl spat simultaneously bending down for her own.
I stacked my stuff into a pile and handed her one of her books. She snatched it from my hands, glaring at me. "Jeez," I stated while lifting my hands up in surrender.
She stood up with one hand on her hip and the other holding her books. "You are aware you are speaking to a Slytherin prefect, right."
''Is that supposed to mean something to me?" I asked standing up holding my books.
I could have sworn I saw steam come out of her ears.
"I get that your the new girl and all but it's high time you learned your place.'' She sneered stepping closer to me.
"My place? Girl, what the hell-" I was interrupted by her smacking the books out of my hand and onto the floor, again.
I stared at her, mouth agape. She stepped closer to me, inches away from my face.
"Pansy." A stern voice interrupted. Her head snapped to their direction.
"Let's get to class." It coaxed.
It was Draco.
"You just made an enemy." She whispered before whipping her head around and joining him.
