Kolkata, 5 Ramadan 1445 H
Still at 6.45 am, Mrs. Salamah was already walking non-stop towards Mr. Salman's shop. It seemed that Mrs. Salamah did not want to delay asking Mr. Salman, so she immediately left after the dawn prayer. After walking for a while, finally Mrs. Salamah arrived at Mr. Salman's shop.
"Chotu, where's Salman?" Asked Mrs. Salamah to Chotu, the waiter at Mr. Salman's shop.
"There he is, madame." Chotu replied while pointing at the 3 men who were busy chatting.
Mrs. Salamah went straight to the crowd. Mr. Salman, it looks like he's checking his customer order record list.
"I want to talk to you." Said Mrs. Salamah to Mr. Salman.
"Yes, we'll talk later." Mr. Salman answered without looking at Mrs. Salamah.
"I have to talk to you now. Otherwise I'll speak in front of everyone." Said Mrs. Salamah in a forceful tone.
"You guys go, we'll talk again later." Said Mr. Salman to the two servants who spoke to him earlier.
Mr. Salman and Mrs. Salamah finally spoke in the garden. Mr. Salman stood with his back to Mrs. Salamah. So that Mr. Salman and Mrs. Salamah spoke without looking at each other's faces.
"What's wrong, Salamah?" Asked Mr. Salman.
"I have something to ask you." Replied Mrs. Salamah.
"Just ask, Salamah." Said Mr. Salman.
"Why did you slap my daughter?" Asked Mrs. Salamah.
"Your daughter has acted like that. That day the family Ruqayyah’s future husband come to see Ruqayyah, then with what right does he dare to insult my mother?" Said Mr. Salman.
"My daughter won't do that. But why do you bring up my upbringing?" Said Mrs. Salamah.
"Why does she interfere in other people's business?" Said Mr. Salman.
"It's not meddling but caring. Maybe you will never understand the difference between meddling and caring. Before marriage, was it wrong to know the candidate?" Said Mrs. Salamah.
"My father already knows everything." Said Mr. Salman.
"Your parents decide everything." Said Mrs. Salamah.
"Your daughter wants to cut ties with my daughter." Said Mr. Salman.
"She doesn't want to cut off your child's relationship. Sadiqah just wants you to find out the religion and morals of Ruqayyah's future husband. Sadiqah just wants to make sure Ruqayyah is happy with her marriage. If you think it's wrong, then let it go." Said Mrs. Salamah.
"If she doesn't want to ruin my daughter's relationship, why would she enter the family house of Ruqayyah's future husband's family without permission? Then spy on us?" Asked Mr. Salman
"She never entered someone else's house without permission. At that time she only entered the courtyard of the house, and the guard brought her in. She did not come to the house to spy on you. She just wanted to bring a missing child to her mother. Sadiqah thought that is the child's house, finally the child's mother approached Sadiqah and took her child then the child's mother said that if she did not live in the house anymore and immediately left. When Sadiqah entered her taxi again she realized that her purse had fallen in the house so Sadiqah would have to back to the yard of the house to get his wallet. Then Sadiqah accidentally knocked the jar in the yard until it fell. Then the guard brought her to meet you. And you know what happened next. " Said Mrs. Salamah, giving clarification.
"What do you want, Salamah?" Asked Mr. Salman.
"Many things Salman. 20 years have passed, many things have changed, but you are still the same. You never listen to other people's explanations. You only listen to your mother's explanations. In front of everyone you have the heart to knock me down, you forget your promise. In front of everyone, you had the heart to leave me at that time. That day you said in front of everyone, my daughter is rude, has no shame, and a child who has no father. " Said Mrs. Salamah.
"She really doesn't have a father." Said Mr. Salman defensively.
"Do you know, words often hurt more than a beating. Especially if it comes from your own family. One more thing, Salman, to this day I still hide everything from everyone, even from my own daughter. To the extent that I am afraid. opened my mouth. But now I'm not afraid of anyone. I used to be weak, but I'm not anymore. The me now isn't the me I used to be. " Said Mrs. Salamah.
"20 years ago, what happened between us, everyone already knows. Now what else do you want to tell Salamah?" Said Mr. Salman.
"I'll tell you. The child you slapped yesterday, the child you said had no father, is actually her father is still alive. Even the father of that child is standing in front of me today." Said Mrs. Salamah.
Mr. Salman was surprised and angry to hear Mrs. Salamah's words because no one was standing in front of Mrs. Salamah apart from Mr. Salman himself. Mr. Salman turned to face Mrs. Salamah
"What did you say Salamah?" Asked Mr.Salman.
"The father of Sadiqah is you Salman." Said Mrs. Salamah.
"That means, Uncle Salman is ... my father." Murmured Sadiqah, who overheard Mrs. Salamah and Mr. Salman's conversation.
Actually Sadiqah followed her mother to stop her mother who looked so angry with Mr. Salman who had slapped Sadiqah. But it ended with Sadiqah hearing this truth from her parents' own words. Sadiqah left that place on her bicycle because she was not ready to accept this fact. Meanwhile Mr. Salman and Mrs. Salamah were still in the park because their conversation had not ended.
"Today I'm telling you so you know what your mistake was." Said Mrs. Salamah as she walked away from Mr. Salman.
"I know I was wrong if I hit your daughter. But to prove me wrong, you don't have to lie like this until I hate seeing your face." Said Mr. Salman.
"You want to accept this fact or not, everything will not change. Do you remember Salman, we separate because divorce lawsuit. You and your mother asked me to leave your house after I finished my iddah period. But the truth is, I was pregnant at the time, I was late to find out about it. I tried to tell you at that time, but it turns out you have really left me, and my memories. You are already happy with your new life without me. I gave birth to twins at that time, but one of my children is missing when born." Said Mrs. Salamah.
"Actually Salamah, I was the one who brought your child. I and Jannat gave her the name Ruqayyah. I didn't know if Ruqayyah had twins, so I think you are lying when you say that Sadiqah is my daughter." Said Mr. Salman.
"Why would you do that Salman?" Asked Mrs. Salamah.
"At that time Jannat was very depressed because she lost her baby in an accident and even her uterus had been removed. My mother asked me to take your child when my mother found out you gave birth to my child. When Jannat was completely cured of her depression, she remembered that she had lost the baby. She knew that Ruqayyah not her real child. That's why she felt so guilty towards you when she found out the truth. " Said Mr. Salman.
"When did you ever love me? Today you hate me. When you found out I was pregnant with your child, you didn't ask to come back at least to finish my iddah period. You even left me. I didn't ask the name of the father for my child. I just wanted to say, starting today if my child cries because of you, I will not accept it. I can not forgive you Salman. " Said Mrs. Salamah.
"I just want to be devoted to my mother, Salamah. Is that wrong?" Asked Mr. Salman.
"Realize Salman, your obedience to your mother has made you unfair to your wife, and also your children. For your devotion to your mother you have separated a child from his mother, a mother to her child, and someone from her own sister. In our religion, we are. it is forbidden to be obedient to your parents in cases that are against the law. Repent, may Allah forgive you. And pray that one day I can forgive you. " said Mrs. Salamah.
Mrs. Salamah, and Mr. Salman walked in opposite directions and left the park.
Salamah (40) POV
For years I looked for my daughter, almost desperate for herself to wait for her presence. It turns out that all this time my daughter is very close to me. It turns out that my neighbor's child is my daughter. Why can't I feel her presence? 20 years have passed so many things have changed, but Salman is still like that. Couldn't he have changed for the better, at least for her own daughter. Why did he have the heart to separate his own child from her mother? I only get tired when I talk to Salman, because only his mother he will listen to. I chose to leave the park, because this conversation had yielded nothing but tiredness. I continued walking away from the park, and walked back home. I was silent for a while because the road in front of me was still full of vehicles. On the opposite side, I saw my daughter Ruqayyah also waiting to cross. Looks like she's going to her father's shop. After feeling that the road in front of her was deserted, Ruqayyah stepped out to cross the road. Suddenly a car sped toward Ruqayyah. I saw with my own eyes, a child I had not had time to say that I was her mother almost had an accident. I ran to save her. Ruqayyah survived the accident and now she is in my arms, but her face is filled with fear.
"Are you alright ?" I asked my daughter, holding her cheeks.
"I'm fine, aunt. Are you hurt?" Said Ruqayyah.
"Alhamdulillah. Mother is not hurt, dear." I said.
I hugged my daughter again, Ruqayyah returned my hug with doubt. I don't want to lose my daughter again. And sure enough, there is someone who releases our arms. That person intended to distance me from my own daughter. That person is Mrs. Pakizah.
"What are you doing, how dare you approach my granddaugther." Mrs Pakizah said to me.
"Grandma, aunt Salamah only saved me from an accident." Said Ruqayyah to her grandmother.
"Really Ruqayyah? Are you okay, Ruqayyah? Are you hurt?" Asked Mrs. Pakizah who was worried about Ruqayyah.
"I'm fine grandma." Said Ruqayyah.
"Ruqayyah, next time you want to cross, watch the road properly. Where are you going to Ruqayyah?" Mrs. Grandma Pakizah.
"I'm going to dad's shop. Father asked me to deliver something." Said Ruqayyah.
"Okay, immediately fulfill your father's call." Mrs. Pakizah told Ruqayyah.
"Thank you, aunt." Ruqayyah said just before she continued on to her father's shop, Salman.
Only me, and Mrs. Pakizah left on this street.
"Why could you do this? Why do you mean to separate me from my own child?" I asked Mrs. Pakizah.
"Don't call me mom. I'm not your mother. And I don't understand what you're saying at all." Mrs Pakizah said to me.
"I already know that Ruqayyah is my daughter who disappeared 19 years ago. Why did you keep me from Ruqayyah?" I asked.
"Because I don't want my flesh and blood to be cared for and educated by you. I never liked you. I don't want my granddaugther to be like you. You and Ruqayyah are very different and it's thanks to my upbringing on her." Replied Mrs. Pakizah.
"Why did you never like me?" I asked
"Okay, I will tell you the truth. Your father is the person responsible for the death of my husband, Salman’s father. That's why I will never accept you as my daughter-in-law. Even if you know the truth, don't you try to approach, or talk about something with Ruqayyah. Or me will do something that you never imagined. " Said Mrs. Pakizah as she left me alone.
Mrs. Pakizah the more I believe that you are a good person, the more you prove me wrong. Mrs. Pakizah to this day I still respect you as I respect my own mother. But have you ever thought of me as your daughter while you didn't think of me as your daughter-in-law when I was the wife of your son, Salman. You don't like it so much that you force me to do khulu '. Even you have the heart to endanger my life, and the lives of the babies in my womb so that I can quickly finish my iddah period. Not only that, you had the heart to separate me from my own daughter when you found out that your new daughter-in-law couldn't give you a grandchild. You also accuse me of being the one who caused your daughter-in-law to fall down the stairs to death. I almost got the death sentence if Salman didn't come and tell the truth about what happened and Jannat died. After that you always gave my family pain. You always say Sadiqah is a fatherless child with bad character. I don't know what kind of pain you will give if you know Sadiqah is also your granddaugther. Will you separate me from Sadiqah as well as you will separate me from my daughter Ruqayyah?
Author POV
Sadiqah sat in front of her house. She still remembers the conversation between her mother and Mr. Salman.
"I have to tell Ruqayyah, if I want to know the truth." Sadiqah muttered to herself.
Suddenly Mr. Salman walked towards his house, which is opposite Sadiqah's house, carrying a vegetable basket in both hands. Sadiqah saw a vegetable that had fallen from the basket because it was overloaded. Sadiqah walked over to Mr. Salman.
"Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Said Sadiqah.
"Wa’alaikum salam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Mr. Salman answered.
"Dad, the vegetables fell off." Said Sadiqah to Mr. Salman.
"What did you say Sadiqah?" Asked Mr. Salman.
Sadiqah realized that she had wrongly called Mr. Salman as father. Sadiqah picked up the fallen vegetables and gave them to Mr. Salman.
"Uncle, I just want to tell you if the vegetables you brought fell from the basket." Said Sadiqah.
"Thank you Sadiqah. Sadiqah whatever happened yesterday, I beg your pardon." Said Mr. Salman.
"Uncle, I have forgiven you because of Allah. Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Said Sadiqah.
"Wa’alaikum salam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Mr. Salman answered.
After that Mr. Salman went into his house as well as Sadiqah. Inside Mr. Salman's house, he just sat in the family room, daydreaming, remembering his good times with Mrs. Salamah as a husband and wife. Ruqayyah was surprised by the attitude of her father who kept on daydreaming since returning from the shop. Ruqayyah approached her father.
"Dad, what are you thinking? Why are you daydreaming?" Ruqayyah asked curiously.
"Ruqayyah, please bring your father's pajamas outside." Said Mr. Salman.
Instead of answering Ruqayyah's questions, Mr. Salman tried to keep Ruqayyah busy with homework.
"Fine dad." Ruqayyah said happily that at least his father stopped daydreaming.
Ruqayyah immediately carried out her father's orders. She hurried outside to pick up a dry clothesline. Suddenly Sadiqah came to where Ruqayyah was.
"Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Said Sadiqah.
"Wa'alaikum salam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. Sadiqah, what are you doing here? If grandmother finds out we are talking, she will be angry." Said Ruqayyah.
"I want to talk about important matters with you Ruqayyah." Said Sadiqah.
"Quickly say Sadiqah." Said Ruqayyah.
"I already know the reason for the animosity between our two families, Ruqayyah." Said Sadiqah.
"What is the cause, Sadiqah?" Asked Ruqayyah.
"I have learned a truth today. Ruqayyah, we are sisters. Your father is my father. 20 years ago my mother and your father were husband and wife. For some reason my mother and your father separated. Then after that your father married aunt Jannat, your mother." Said Sadiqah who only knew part of the truth.
Until now, Sadiqah and Ruqayyah, only knew that Ruqayyah was Mrs. Jannat's daughter. Even though this is not the case.
"I don't trust you Sadiqah. My mother doesn't take anyone's place. My mother is with great pains to win over everyone here." Said Ruqayyah.
Ruqayyah was offended because it seemed as if Sadiqah had said that her mother was the cause of the separation of Sadiqah's parents. Especially the fact that Sadiqah and Ruqayyah were born in the same year.
"Forgive me Ruqayyah if my words are not pleasing to your heart. But I really don't mean that." Said Sadiqah.
"Ruqayyah, why is it taking so long?" Shouted Grandma Pakizah as she walked towards the drying place.
"Sadiqah, hurry and go. it won't be good If grandma sees you here.” Said Ruqayyah.
"Wassalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Say Sadiqah before leaving.
"Wa’alaikum salam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Ruqayyah replied.
Sadiqah went from the drying place in the yard of Grandpa Daud's house. Grandma Pakizah arrived at the drying place after Sadiqah left there.
"What are you doing Ruqayyah? Just lifting the clothesline, why did it take you so long? Yes, I'll help." Said Grandma Pakizah as she helped Ruqayyah lift the clothesline.
Time passed, day has turned into night.
Tonight, after the tarawih prayer, Ruqayyah ironed the clothes that were removed from the clothesline this afternoon. Ruqayyah couldn't stop thinking about what Sadiqah had said this afternoon. This made Ruqayyah pay no attention to the clothes she was ironing. Grandma Pakizah came to where Ruqayyah was when Grandma Pakizah smelled a burning object.
"What are you doing Ruqayyah?" Asked Grandma Pakizah as she took over the iron that Ruqayyah brought.
"I'm sorry grandma. I didn't mean to." Said Ruqayyah who realized that he almost made the clothes he ironed burn.
"Go to sleep Ruqayyah. Let me continue ironing the clothes. Looks like you're sleepy." Said Grandma Pakizah.
"Okay, Grandma." Said Ruqayyah as she went to her room.
"It seems like something is bothering Ruqayyah. From earlier she couldn't do anything right. I have to find out." Grandma Pakizah muttered to herself.
In her room, Ruqayyah could not sleep. Even though she had ablution, and prayed before going to sleep, she still couldn't sleep. Yes, because praying before bed does not make a person fall asleep. The content of prayer before going to sleep is asking Allah to look after someone who is sleeping. Ruqayyah just turned her body around. Ruqayyah was so disturbed by her own thoughts. She woke up again and took a photo of her dead mother. She cried while hugging her mother's photo. Every day she missed her mother. Today she missed her mother even more. Moreover, Sadiqah had told Ruqayyah something about her mother. Ruqayyah had tried to keep her from shedding tears, but she couldn't help it anymore. Holding back her tears will only make her homesicker even more.
* Grandma Sumayyah's residence *
Sadiqah is sewing clothes at the moment. Every day Sadiqah sews clothes in her room so that she can sell them and earn an income. Sadiqah is not someone who understands fashion trends, and she just doesn't care about clothes trends. You don't even find a dressing table in her room. In her room there is only a study table and a table for sewing. She is only capable, and only wants to make syar'i clothes. She only makes anarkali dress or serwani. Sadiqah believed that it was a big risk to become a tailor. If she makes clothes that are syar'i then she gets merit and the profits she gets will bring blessings to her life, but if she makes clothes that are not according to the law then she will sin, and lose the blessings of her income. Sadiqah also thought that the tendency of the people to wear clothes that were not in accordance with the syariat was due to the less pious tailors. If a person shows a path of truth and goodness to her sister then for her the reward is the same as the person who does that good. Conversely, if someone causes another person to fall into sin, for her the sin is the same as the person who committed the sin. It means that the less cautious tailors will get the sins of those who wear the clothes they sew. Because the tailor is the one who makes people get sin for wearing clothes that are not according to the law. It also means that the godless tailor is guilty of sin every second because people put on the clothes she sews all day long.
In making clothes, she only uses standard sizes, because she never really knows the body size of her customers. She doesn't take orders for clothes, she just makes clothes according to standard sizes and sells them. For nothing, Sadiqah just didn't want to touch other people's bodies, and she didn't want to open up opportunities for seclusion. Sadiqah also does not arbitrarily choose fabrics for the clothes she will sew. Sadiqah does not use silk cloth, and cloth that will steal the attention of those who look at it.
This is a form of defending religion according to profession. Sadiqah wants to help her fellow believers towards the path of obedience and submission to Allah SWT. Together to obtain His mercy, and towards His jannah.
Sadiqah is about to finish her third Anarkali dress at this point, but the thread she uses for sewing has run out. Sadiqah took a new thread from her desk drawer. After that she threads the needle hole. Because Sadiqah was out of focus when thinking about today's events, accidentally her ring finger was pricked so deeply that it bled.
"Aww .." Sadiqah screamed in pain.
Mrs. Salamah, who passed in front of Sadiqah's room, was surprised to hear Sadiqah's scream.
"Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Said Mrs. Salamah in front of Sadiqah's room.
"Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh. Come in, mother." Said Sadiqah
Mrs. Salamah went into Sadiqah's room. Mrs. Salamah saw Sadiqah's bleeding finger.
"Sadiqah, your finger is bleeding. You wait there, mother will take the medicine box." Said Mrs. Salamah as she went to get the medicine box that was put in the cupboard in her room.
Meanwhile Sadiqah waited for Mrs. Salamah to return to her room. Soon Mrs. Salamah returned to Sadiqah's room with a medicine box. Mrs. Salamah sat next to Sadiqah and then held Sadiqah's injured hand. Mrs. Salamah cleaned the blood on Sadiqah's finger with cotton and then put medicine on Sadiqah's wound.
"Aww ..." Sadiqah screamed in pain.
"Does it really hurt?" Asked Mrs. Salamah.
"Bit, mother. Mother, wich was more painful to stick with needles or lied to for years by someone we trusted the most?" Asked Sadiqah.
"Of course it hurts more to be lied, Sadiqah. Why do you ask that?" Asked Mrs. Salamah.
"For the first time I disagreed with my mother. For me getting a needle is more painful. Mother, a person is not tormented because of someone else's bad deed to her, but someone is tormented because she has not been able to forgive someone else's bad deed to her. Mother, everyone has the right to have the opportunity to improve herself and I know there is no human who has never made a mistake. Forgiveness is a very noble act and one of the keys to one's happiness in this world and the hereafter.
Allah SWT said:
fa maaa uutiitum min syaiʻin fa mataa'ul-hayaatid-dun-yaa, wa maa 'indallohi khoiruw wa abqoo lillaziina aamanuu wa' alaa robbihim yatawakkaluun
"Whatever (enjoyment) is given to you, it is the pleasure of living in the world. Whereas what (enjoyment) is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who believe, and only in God they put their trust,"

"and also (for) those who keep away from grave sins and heinous deeds, and when they get angry immediately forgive,"
(QS. Ash-Shura 42: Verses 36 - 37)
But mother, everyone who has received forgiveness from his siblings should repent to Allah SWT,"said Sadiqah.
"Alhamdulillah because Allah has given you a forgiving heart. Mother is very grateful, and proud to have a daughter like you." Said Mrs. Salamah, covering Sadiqah's wound with gauze.
"Thank you mom." Said Sadiqah.
"You're welcome Sadiqah. Next time be careful." Said Mrs. Salamah.
"Yes mom next time I'll be careful." Said Sadiqah.
"I am surprised by you Sadiqah." Said Mrs. Salamah.
"Hm ..." Said Sadiqah confused.
"A few days ago, you told the children that going to bed immediately after the evening prayer is sunnah. But today for the first time you are sewing clothes at night?" Mother asked.
"Em .. yes I forgot mom. I just thought of finishing these clothes as soon as possible. Next time I'll just sew clothes during the day. Thank you mom for reminding me." Said Sadiqah.
"You better rest now, it looks like you are very tired. Don't forget to pray before bed. Wassalamu'alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Said Mrs. Salamah.
"Wa’alaikum salam warahmatullahi wabarakatuh." Sadiqah replied.
Mrs. Salamah left Sadiqah's room.
"Mother, I just want to say that whatever you do I have forgiven you. Because I know you only want good for me." Inner Sadiqah.
Sadiqah clears her belongings for sewing. Sadiqah returns the thread, needle and scissors to their original place. Then Sadiqah folded the unfinished clothes she had sewn into the cupboard in her room. After everything was finished, Sadiqah got ready to lay down on the bed and pulled the blanket up to her chest.
