"I'm sorry…but…I already have a boyfriend."
Travis stood there, mortified. How could I have forgotten that she had a boyfriend?! That was the reason why I hadn't confessed to her before!
Travis started laughing. "Of course…of course…I'm sorry…I'll be going now."
Turning back, Travis looked at the ground, unsure what to do. What number does that make it now? I lost count after twenty.
Arriving back home, Travis took off his shoes. "I'm back."
His mom appeared from around the corner. "Where were you?! I keep on telling you to tell me when you're leaving!"
"I was just at the park with a friend."
His mom sighed. "Just let me know next time. Dinner is almost ready."
"Alright." Travis walked upstairs into his room and plopped himself onto his bed.
An alarm from an alarm clock rang through the room. Travis reached out his hand, hitting the clock. However, he missed the snooze button. After many failed attempts, Travis was successful. Slowly sitting up, he looked at the clock. "You just have to be the first thing I hear every morning. Why can't I hear, 'Good morning Travis! I came here to wake you up for school!' from a girl?"
A voice shocked Travis. "Because that's just plain weird."
Looking at his door, Travis saw his sister Jennifer standing at the door. "Haven't you heard of knocking?!"
"Maybe I have. Maybe I haven't, now get up perv. Breakfast is almost ready, and Mom wouldn't want to see you still in your boxers when you come down for breakfast. "
Jennifer shut the door, leaving Travis alone in his room. Sighing, Travis quickly showered and dressed into his school uniform. Walking downstairs and into the dining room, he saw that his breakfast was already on a plate. Sitting down, he began to eat. Jennifer was sitting in the seat next to him, finishing up her relatively small breakfast. "Was there even any food on the plate?"
Jennifer glared at Travis. "Yes there was."
"How much? A molecule of egg? A half an ounce of juice?"
Jennifer kicked Travis from under the table. "Ow! I'm just sayin, maybe you're trying to keep slim to impress that Jerry guy at school."
Jennifer kicked Travis even harder. "Shut up! I don't even like him! He's a pervert just like all his other buddies."
Their mom shouted at them to knock it off. After a few second stare down, Jennifer got up and walked upstairs to her room. Quickly eating breakfast, Travis ran upstairs into the bathroom, brushed his teeth and grabbed his backpack. "I'm off!"
"Be careful getting to school!"
"I will!"
Running out of the house, Travis got to the sidewalk and began his ritual of walking to school. Halfway there, he felt his phone buzz in his pocket. Taking it out, he saw that it was from his mom. "Taking Grandpa to the doctor's later today then going out for dinner with him. You have to fend for yourself tonight."
Travis sighed and put his phone back in his pocket. "I wonder if we have the ingredients for tacos…"
Finally arriving at the school, Travis went to his locker, picked up his books, and headed for his classroom. Sitting down at his desk, he spotted the girl from yesterday and quickly turned away. Opening his book, he was hoping to get his mind off of his rejection when he felt an arm being placed on his shoulder. "The loneliness, the open book pretending to be studying, you must have been rejected then."
Turning around, Travis saw his friend Chris. "I'm right, aren't I?"
Travis rolled his eyes. "That's the fourth one this month. How am I ever going to get a girlfriend at this rate?"
Chris sat down at the desk to his left. "In due time my friend. In due time. After all, you're receiving advice from THE 'Love Expert' at school."
"I thought it was the 'Ultimate Womanizer'."
"Don't worry about the trivial details. Let's start planning your—hi Sarah!"
Chris started waving at a girl who just walked in the classroom. She saw Chris and quickly walked to her seat, ignoring him.
"She's just playing hard to get. She won't be able to resist me for long."
"I don't know. I'm starting to think it's quite easy to resist you."
"So mean! However, since your heart is in despair, I'll forgive this intolerable indecency against me, and help you like a best friend should!"
"Where'd the big words come from?"
"Anime."
"Of course."
Chris looked at Travis. "On a serious note, don't worry about it. Sure, you haven't had a girlfriend since the fifth grade…and even then, that might not count, but look on the bright side, you at least have a best friend. Other people would kill for that."
Travis looked at Chris. "Change the 'serious' to 'downright depressing.'"
Chris smirked. "Anyways, you'll get one. I have a feeling the process of getting a girlfriend will start today!"
"Or that could be the feeling of the chili you had last night."
"…that too."
The bell rang, signaling that class was about to start.
Christ took out his books. "We'll talk after class. We don't want Mr. Usla to get mad at us again for talking during class."
Travis nodded his head and looked back down at his book. Soon, Mr. Usla walked in the room. "Alright class, before we begin, I'm here to introduce you to a new transfer student."
The door opened and a brunette girl walked into the room. "Everyone, this is Mary. She just transferred here from New York."
Travis looked up. New York huh? That's a long way from here…
"A little over two thousand miles." Chris whispered.
Is he a mind reader or something?
Mary waved at everyone. "Nice to meet you. I'm Mary."
Travis finally looked at Mary. Woah!
Mary's hair was a bit longer than shoulder length. It wasn't straight, but wasn't too wavy either. Looking at her height, Travis thought she must have been around his height.
Mr. Usla looked around the classroom. "Ah, there's your seat. Right down the third aisle. See it?"
Mary nodded her head.
"Alright. That's your seat for the rest of the semester. It's about time to start class, so please take your seat."
Travis glanced at Mary as she walked down the aisle. Brown eyes…cute face…
Travis then looked to his right. Wait…the empty seat…
Mary took a seat at the desk, right next to Travis. Oh you have got to be kidding me! What if I my stomach rumbles during class?! It'll look like I'm just a pig who can't get enough to eat!
