"Hurry up!" He yelled. Hiro ran where everyone else was heading. Kyra ran to catch up.
She was bewildered. "Where are we heading?"
Hiro didn't look back. "The bunkers. We'll be safe there."
"What's going on?"
Another woman running with them overheard the conversation. "The enemy. Fort Cirrus. It was a surprise attack from them. Luckily, a small one." She hurried ahead of them.
Kyra stared at her up ahead. "Fort Cirrus?"
"I'll explain later." Hiro was panting but didn't stop. "Right now, we have to be quiet."
After a moment, a small cabin came into view, looking only big enough for ten people. But somehow, hundreds of men and women were squeezing into the space.
"That's the bunker?" Kyra shook her head. "How?"
Hiro smiled. "You'll see."
When they reached the door, they were almost plowed down by the people trying to go in too. Hiro grabbed Kyra's arm so they wouldn't get separated in a sea of soldiers.
"This way!" He spoke. Hiro dragged her to a small trap door at the edge of the room. He shoved Kyra down first. There was a ladder, going down about twenty feet. When she and Hiro got to the bottom, she looked around. It was a huge cavern, as big as the camp itself. Hundreds, no, thousands were crowded around each other. Some held onto each other, others held onto things that they grabbed.
"Ta-da!" Hiro gestured all around. "What do you think?"
"Wow. Seems like the ultimate hiding place." Kyra shivered. "Now what?"
"We wait. And not a peep."
Every ten to twenty minutes, they could hear an occasional bomb exploding. The impact shook the cavern. Kyra shivered. But this time, out of fear.
She whispered as quiet as she could. "Hiro. What time do you think it is?"
He whispered back. "Probably around 18:30."
"Huh?"
"Sorry, that's army time. I meant around 6:30."
Kyra felt a little embarrassed. "Oh."
After about two hours, the bombs stopped altogether. Kyra felt relief. She looked at Hiro and could tell he was thinking the same. He motioned for her still not to say anything or go anywhere and walked over to General Michael and some other officials. He exchanged a few whispers then came back to Kyra.
"What's going on?" She still kept her voice quiet.
He looked around. "I've been given orders to take a team outside to see if they have left."
"I'll go with you."
Hiro shook his head. "Too risky. You don't have any training. Stay."
"Please?"
Hiro looked down for a moment, thinking. He looked up again at Kyra. "Fine. But you must stay near the cabin's door. Okay?"
She felt excited. "Understood."
"Stay here for a moment. I have to assemble a team." Hiro ducked into the crowds for a few minutes then came back with several others, including Arrow. "Kyra, meet our team." He nodded to the other couple. "This is Echo and Cammi."
The two girls nodded together. Echo had jet black long hair and light green eyes. She had on a brave look but her pools of eyes gave away her slight fear.
Cammi was a dark brown and had gold-brown eyes to match. She wore a small grin which was accompanied by straight, white teeth. Both girls wore the same uniform with twin ranks.
Hiro introduced Kyra. "Echo, Cammi, meet Kyra. She's our newest recruit. Like, really new. She'll be joining us on this mission." Hiro retreated back into the crowds of soldiers. "I'll be right back."
The three girls stood in awkward silence, staring at each other. Finally, Cammi broke the silence. "So.. new recruit huh?"
Kyra straightened up. "Just started today."
Echo just stared at both of them.
Cammi smiled a bit. "I was kinda fat too when I first started. But war shaped me up."
"Really?" Kyra sighed. Where was Hiro?
"You know.. I could be your trainer. To help you get into shape before we hit the battlefield."
"Cool. When?"
"In about.. 4 months. So we don't have long. By the way, what tent are you in?"
Kyra couldn't remember. "I forgot, but I know the way there."
Just then, Hiro reappeared. He held a box holding enough weapons for all of them. He looked at them all. "Choose your weapon."
All of them went forward and grabbed a gun. Echo grabbed a rifle and Cammi took a shotgun. Both of them started filling it with bullets. Hiro got a gun similar to Cammi's and gave a handgun and a machete in a case and strap to Kyra.
"Here, strap the machete to you. Only use this if the gun is useless." He instructed Kyra on how to shoot the handgun then grabbed a machete for himself. "Let's go."
One by one, they climbed the ladder, careful not to drop their guns. Kyra was the last one out. They slowly stalked out of the small house. All of them looked at Hiro for further advice.
"Last thing, stay in the trees and scream code red if someone finds you." Then he crept to the bushes. Kyra stayed on the deck of the cabin as told, peeling her eyes out for any movement. Echo went to the right, Cammi left, and Hiro out of sight. Kyra's ears were sharp as they listened to every bush movement and every bird caw. She jumped at every sound. As terrified as she was, she loved this. She felt important and honored to be with the team.
Suddenly, bushes started crackling. She turned around in time to find a soldier pointing a gun at her. Probably from the other team, she concluded. She ducked. Bullets scattered behind but luckily, she wasn't hit. She turned to run inside the cabin but stopped. That will expose the whole army! Instead, Kyra took a few shots and started running into the forest that surrounded the camp. She heard the soldier grunt and his body thumped to the ground. She was terrified for her life, adrenaline pumping through her as she ran. But at the same time, she felt a thrill she hadn't felt for a while.
She looked back for a moment and in that instant, she smacked into another person. The person fell to the ground, gun falling out of their hands. Kyra quickly recovered and aimed her handgun, finger closing around the trigger.
"Wait! Don't shoot, don't shoot!" The soldier shouted.
Kyra froze. Cammi? Relief overcame her as she dropped her hands to her sides and trembled.
"Cammi? What happened?"
Cammi groaned, trying to get up. "I was gonna ask you the same thing."
"I found a soldier. From Fort Cirrus, I think."
Cammi stared at Kyra. "What?"
"Don't worry, I shot him down. And then I ran. I didn't want him finding out about the cabin."
Cammi slumped forward in relief. "That's good. Did you find more soldiers?"
"I didn't hear or see anyone but I can't be sure."
Cammi groaned again. "Oof. I feel like a wrecking ball hit me. What do you eat?"
"Umm, some of this, some of that. Where are the others?" Kyra quickly changed the subject.
"Here we are!" Hiro came up out of the bushes, Echo following him. "We heard gunshots. Everyone okay?"
"I think so.." Kyra replied.
"Not me! Kyra smashed into me at the speed of like a hundred miles an hour." Cammi moaned.
"I thought you were supposed to be tough, Cammi. You've been in the army for a while you know." Hiro jeered.
"Get plowed over by Kyra here and you won't be laughing either."
"Sorry.." Kyra mumbled, embarrassed by the problems she caused.
"It.. it's fine.. I can still walk, I think." Cammi sighed.
Hiro added. "Good. Our work here isn't done. We still have to check everything else. Come on."
The team cleared the trees and the whole camp came into view. Kyra gasped. There were holes everywhere where bombs hit. Miraculously, it didn't seem to be too bad.
"At least it's fixable.." Hiro muttered as he took in the ravaged scene.
Almost an hour later, they had searched every crack and cranny of Fort Combat. There was no sign of Fort Cirrus soldiers. It was dusk when they finally arrived back at the small cabin. The soldier still laid at the exact same place, in a pool of blood. He was definitely dead.
All four of them stared in astonishment. Hiro finally broke the silence. "You did that, Kyra?"
"Yep.." was all she could squeak out.
Cammi gave her a pat. "Good job. You saved the army."
"I'll make sure General Michael hears about this." Hiro added. Even Echo cracked a smile.
The team went down into the cavern to give an all-clear. Cheering erupted from the thousands of soldiers. All of them went out. Once they were above ground, Hiro went to talk to the General. Cammi, Echo, and Kyra went about, retelling the story and the fear each of them felt. Once the group of giggling girls settled down, Cammi spoke.
"Come on. Let's go back to our sleeping quarters. And I'm pretty sure you're in our tent, Kyra." She added. "By the way, I'm the leader of the tent."
All of them went back, the soldiers going to their designated places. Turns out, Kyra did share a tent with Cammi and Echo. What are the odds? She thought with a snicker. She went to her bed at the way back, to find a diary sitting on it. Surprised, Kyra opened it up. It was blank. She wondered who it could belong to. She flipped to the beginning to find an even bigger shocker. At the bottom, she found her name- written in her handwriting.
Just then, Cammi's voice rang out. "All right girlies, lights out! Tomorrow's gonna be a very busy day!"
Kyra sighed. She'd have to check out the mystery journal later.
