Freshman Year - Jupiter
My phone rings. I sigh and roll over to grab it. I answer the phone. “Damn, bean. You look like a hot mess.” Omari says. I laugh. “Get the hell up. It’s the first day of school.” He says. I open my eyes the tiniest bit. “Are you in your car?” I say in a small voice. “Yeah, we’re coming to get you!” Isaiah yells. “Shut up, Isa.” I say. “Get up, Jupiter. We’re coming to get Emilio and then we’re coming to get you.” Omari says. “Ugh, fine.” I say. He smiles. “Good morning, bean!” He yells into his phone. I giggle.
“Good morning, you idiots.” I say. “We’re going to jump you.” Isaiah says. “No not.” I say, trying to move my body. “Get up!” Omari yells. “I’m trying! Jesus, I’m still tired, Mari.” I say. I roll over off my bed. “There you go. Progress.” Isaiah says. “Bye.” I say and hang up. I groan into the floor. “Wake up, bean!” My mom calls. “I’m trying!” I yell. It takes me 7 minutes to motivate myself to get up off of the floor. I look around at my room, with all of it’s posters and albums.
I stand in the middle of my room, swaying with my eyes closed. “Okay.” I say and shrug my shoulders. I connect my phone to my speakers. “Ughhhh!” I yawn. I go through my music and choose ‘Waste It On Me’ and set my phone down on my bed. “And I know there’s no making this right, making this right.” I sing. I grab my towels and go into my bathroom. I look at myself in the mirror and yawn.
I get into the shower and sing along to the song. I start to cry after washing my hair. “So if love is nothing more than just a waste of your time, waste it on me.” I sing along while crying. I grab my sponge and start to wash my body. The next song comes on and I cry harder. “Feeling hypnotized by the words that you said. Don’t lie to, just get in my head.” I sing along. After my crying fest in the shower, I climb out and dry my body, going into my room. I snatch up my phone and put on ‘Whoopty’ by CJ. “Smokin' the zaza, it go straight to the māthā. Then I'm uppin' the choppa. I'm hittin' the cha-cha, open his lata. Then he dancin' bachata.” I rap along, getting hype. I dry my hair and grab my outfit.
I tuck my neon green and black Billie Eilish shirt into my jeans then pull a black zipper jacket over my shirt. I pull black socks on and Nike Air Forces. I grab my black and neon green beanie over my semi-dry hair. I do my eyeliner and mascara. I grab my phone and slide it into my back pocket. “Lia!” I hear Emilio yell. “Mio!” I scream and run out of my room and downstairs. I jump into his arms. “I missed you!” I yell. He chuckles. “You too.” He says. I jump down and take in his outfit.
Air Jordan 1 High Quai 54’s with black ripped jeans. A red and blue jacket over a King Von hoodie and a black headband he probably stole from me. I shake my head, smiling. He poses. “You like the fit, huh?” He says and sticks his lips out and then his tongue. I scream. “Mio! You got your braces!” I scream at him. His eyes go wide then he bolts out the front door. “Love you, mom!” I yell before running out the door after him.
I jump in the car and punch Emilio in the arm. “You’re such a rat! You didn’t tell me you got your braces!” I yell. “Hey, bean.” Omari and Isaiah say. I turn to them and smile. “Hey,” I say then turn back to Mio and glare. He smiles innocently. I put my seatbelt on and turn towards the window, pouting. The car starts to move. “Aw, Lia. Don’t be mad at me.” Mio says. “Hmph. Don’t talk to me.” I say, trying not to smile. Omari snickers. “Fine.” Mio says. I shrug and smile.
I wait a few more seconds then I feel Mio wrapping his arms around me. “Please, Lia, forgive me! Thou forgiveth me!” He says. I start to laugh and wrap my arms around his neck. “Fine, rat. I forgive you.” I say. “No. Forgiveth me.” Mio says, smiling. “ I forgiveth you, Emilio Rosaro the fourth.” I say. “Thank you, Lady Jupiter Lia of Buckingham. Thank you.” He says. I push him off of me. “Hey, bean! It’s your first day of Freshman year!” Omari yells, smiling. “Ew, don’t remind me, Mari.” I say. He starts to laugh. “You’re ridiculous.” He says, laughing. We all start to laugh.

“She likes you, bro. Why’d you do that to her?” Dylan’s little brother, Mason says. “I don’t know, Mason.” Dylan says. “She was your friend.” Mason says and shakes his head at Dylan. “But she liked him.” Kali says. “So what?” Mason says. “She’s not pretty.” Kali says. Dylan clenches his jaw. “Kali, shut up! Just because she wasn’t your friend doesn’t mean she wasn’t mine.” Mason says. “Ugh, fine.” Kali says and walks away. Mason looks at Dylan’s face. “Hmph.” He says.
When they went home that day, Mason stared at Dylan. “What?” Dylan said. “You like Jupiter, don’t you?” Mason says. “No, Mason! Go away.” Dylan says. “Yes, you do but you didn’t stop everyone from making her embarrassed.” Mason says and walks away. Dylan looks down at his phone and frowns. And, so, to avoid Jupiter, he starts dating a girl named Caroline in his grade.
Emilio
I put my arm on Jupiter’s shoulder and she wraps her arm around my waist. As we walk into the school with Omari and Isaiah, Jupiter cracks jokes. Randomly she stops and starts doing a weird dance and singing, “Now, I’ll be honest, I don’t really understand.” Me and the boys laugh.
“Stop, stop, stop.” Omari says walking over to her, laughing and trying to stop her. She runs away from him and into the school. People from middle school and her other friends wave at her and she waves to as many people as she can. I smile as I watch her being herself and feeling free. I’m just so happy that she is happy and joking around. I hope nothing ruins that.

I yawn and walk into the school. Immediately I see a girl running down the hallway towards me. She’s smiling and waving at a lot of people and people are also smiling. A boy is chasing after her. I watch her run down the hallway and watch as she tries to hug someone while running. “Hey, baby!” She calls back and smirks at the girl then blows a kiss. The girls laughs. “Fuck you, Jupiter!” The girl yells, smiling. My face falls. Jupiter? No, there’s no way that it’s that Jupiter. No. I won’t believe it. I look past her at the boy chasing her. No, that’s not Emilio. “Bean, stop running!” The boy yells.
I facepalm myself. That’s Omari, her cousin. It is Jupiter. Fuck. I don’t know what to do. She’s getting closer. I look down at her ankle. Of course, it wouldn’t still be sprained. Does she still play basketball? I turn around and she collides into me. I fall on the ground and she falls on top of me. My instant reaction was to wrap my arms around her so she doesn't go on the floor.
She laughs. “Sorry, sorry.” She says, looking behind her. Omari catches up to her and then looks down at me. His face gets hard. Two other boys run up behind Omari. I immediately recognized Emilio as he glared at me. Jupiter continues to laugh until she realizes that they’re all staring at me. “What? What’s wrong? Stop looking at him like--” She looks at me. Her smile fades and turns into a hurt look. She jumps off of me and starts to walk away. “Lia!” Emilio calls after her. He glares down at me one more time then runs after her.
I’m left with Omari and I’m guessing Isaiah. I look up at them. Omari helps me up. “Stay away from her, man.” He says. “Damn. Not even a hello?” I say. “Not after you hurt her.” Omari says, looking past me. “That was a while ago.” I say. “So what, man. You still hurt our little cousin, beyond repair.” Isaiah says. “If I remember correctly, you left the school and she was alone.” I say, defensively. “Last time I checked, you stopped talking to her when you found out she liked you.” Isaiah says, stepping up to me.
“Hey, stop it, dammit.” Omari says. I look at Isaiah and he looks at me. Omari looks at me. “Just, don’t do it again, okay?” He says. I never break eye-contact with Isaiah. “Yeah, alright.” I say. The bell rings. “Get to class, everyone!” A teacher yells. “I’m watching you.” Isaiah says. I dismiss what he said with a wave of my hand and roll my eyes. I walk away and go to my first class.
Jupiter
I’m having an anxiety attack. Emilio grabs me and hugs me. “Why is he here? Why is he here?” I cry. I hyperventilate. “It’s okay, Lia. It’ll be okay.” Mio says. “No, no, no. I never wanted to see him again.” I cry. Then I push Mio away harshly. He flies to the other side of the hallway. He looks at me confused. “What’s next, huh? You’re gonna leave me again, huh?” I yell at him. “Lia, calm down.” Mio says. “No, dammit! You’re going to leave me, aren’t you, dammit!” I yell. “No, I’m not, Lia.” Mio says. “Stop calling me that!” I say.
“Then trust me, Jupiter.” Mio says. “No. No, never. Uhn-uh. You’re gonna leave me, I can’t trust you, can I? No, no, no.” I say, starting to panic. Mio takes a step towards. “Don’t come near me, please. I can’t trust anyone. Don’t come near me.” I say. “Hey, best friend, Lia, I’m here.” He says. “No, stay away.” I say, backing away from him. I went back into the wall. “Please, Lia, calm down.” He says. I pull at my hair and cry harder. “Stop calling me that!” I yell. He pulls out his half of the necklace.
“Do you remember my promise?” He asks. “No, no, no. I can’t trust anyone.” I say, looking everywhere. “Jupiter Lia Fountain, look at me.” Mio says. I drag my eyes to look up at him. I look at his hand holding the necklace. “I promised you that I will take care of you, to protect you, to love you. Lia, I love you and I will protect you. I won’t leave you and I won’t let him hurt you again. I will never let anyone else hurt you.” He says. I drag my eyes up to look into his eyes. I take a step towards him, my hands shaking.

I look at my phone as I walk towards the bathrooms. Suddenly I hear a familiar voice say; “No, no, no. I can’t trust anyone.” Jupiter. I stop in my tracks and look up. Jupiter and Emilio. “Jupiter Lia Fountain, look at me.” Emilio says. Jupiter slowly looks up at him. He’s holding a necklace. “I promised you that I will take care of you, to protect you, to love you. Lia, I love you and I will protect you. I won’t leave you and I won’t let him hurt you again. I will never let anyone else hurt you.” He says. Who me? My brows go together. Jupiter steps towards Emilio. “Come here, princess.” Emilio says. Princess? Are they together?
Jupiter steps closer and soon enough, he’s holding her and she’s crying into his neck. I caused that. I turn and go back to class, not needing to use the bathroom anymore and all day, that scene plays over and over in my head like a terribly sad movie I’ve watched.
