It was the year of 2002, and it was the night after Christmas when she was dropped off. The day after she was born. The hooded woman placed the basket on the front step with the infant inside. She set a letter on the child’s chest which read:
My dear brother,
I’m sorry but I can’t take care of Dawn. I’m too sick and her father won’t take her. So I thought you and Ashley would like to have a little girl to take care of. Her birthday was yesterday, Christmas, so you know when to celebrate. If you hear that I have passed, it will be true. I have had just enough strength to bring her here, after that, I won’t be able to live much longer. I’m sorry if she is a burden. But please don’t reject her.
Sincerely,
Your Sister
The woman sighed, looking into her baby’s sweet face one last time, before knocking loudly on the door. Inside, she heard someone scurry to the barrier as she stumbled off herself. Ashley Wasley opened the door and looked around. A small coo was heard at her feet and her eyes traveled downward.
“Jay,” she called from the front door, “can you come here?”
“Yeah, sure, what is it?” Her husband asked as he walked up to his wife. Ashley points to the infant in the basket at their feet. Jay picks up the letter and reads it. “Dawn, her name is Dawn, and it’s my sister’s baby. But she can’t take care of her.”
“Can we keep her, Jay? Please?” Ashley pleaded. He frowned playfully, then smiled.
“Of course, she’s our niece after all.” Jay agrees. “She doesn’t have a middle name, I’m gonna say, her full name is Dawn Darko Wasley. What do you think?” His wife pauses for a moment.
“I like it, now let’s get inside before she freezes to death,” Ashley smiles.
