“One of the murderers awaken,” I heard a voice behind me. I turned to face the voice, only to get smashed in the face with the butt of a rifle. “Don’t look or speak to me!” the voice responded. “No person who so callously slaughtered his fellow Xelhans should be allowed to be treated any better than a wild animal.”
“But I didn’t kill anyone—“ I started to speak again before I felt a sharp pain in my stomach as the soldier kicked me.
“I said silence! You are nothing more than a monster and you shall be executed with the rest of your ilk.”
“Executed?” I groaned. “I can’t be executed, I was just following orders. Besides executing me like this is murder as well.”
The soldier kicked me again, “Killing a monster is not murder, its vengeance. Mothers, fathers, sons and daughters are dead because of your actions. One more to join the thousands of others is of little consequence.” I heard a gunshot and a shell hitting the ground. The door across from me then opened and a woman stepped through with a large handgun, the muzzle was red and still smoking. I couldn’t tell exactly which one it was; my vision was blurry from the head trauma.
What was unmistakable was her brown hair and green eyes. A fellow Numerian, just like me, except opposite sides. Her face set in a scowl as she approached my position. “Get up!” she ordered. Her voice reverberated in the room, but I was unable to sit up. The other soldier there sat me up and I faced her.
She hovered over me a few moments before pointing the pistol directly between my eyes. “You who have seen fit to lock an entire city down before razing it to the ground. I hope you can look those people in the eye when you meet them at Monjar’s Gate.”
“I was only following orders!” I blurted out as I heard the bullet click into the chamber. I closed my eyes and said a silent prayer to Katherina and Vera as I tensed up, waiting for a shot, but instead heard another voice.
“And so where they! That’s why you deserve the same fate as they do!”
“Nome! Cease and desist this!” another voice ordered as a man entered the room.
“Why Duane? They murdered an entire city. There is no reason why we should show them the mercy not afforded to civilians,” she snapped as she looked at who I presumed was Duane, but her gun remained trained on my forehead.
“You can sink to their level and murder, or you can take the high road and let justice run its course.” I heard her groan at the man’s remark and after what seemed like an eternity I felt the muzzle lift off my forehead. I breathed a sigh of relief before I heard the gun fire and felt a searing pain in my right arm as I fell back to the ground.
"You live... for now," she scowled as she pushed the gun into Duane's chest as she stormed out of the room. I had survived what would later become known as the Mysidia Massacre. The pain in my arm was almost a welcome stimuli, compared to what happened to over 80% of my company and the city of Mysidia. 248Please respect copyright.PENANAchEGlCzv0C
