In 1957, eleven year old Jason Voorhees, 11, allegedly drowned in the cold waters of Camp Crystal Lake. A year later, two camp counsellors, Barry and Claudette, are attacked in the barn. After a series of accidents, and fires, the camp is closed for two decades. 

In the summer of 1979, Steve Christy, and Alice Hardy, hire several campers to look after the camp, unaware of the death curse that causes the town to be on edge.
