Chapter Three
Jack Burrell smoked a cigarette. He watched the road. 'It's over there!', he said. He was with his girlfriend, Marcie Staler, and Ned Rubenstein, the Jewish prankster. All of them were hired by Steve Christy. 'Camp Crystal Lake is cursed', Ned said. 'How do you know?', Marcie asked him.
'I read the newspapers', Ned answered.
He saw the Native American totem poles.
The words: Welcome to Camp Crystal Lake, Est. 1935.
A man was chopping wood with an axe. He had blonde hair, blue eyes, and average height; he wore blue shorts, and wore a red scarf across his thin neck. 'Can you three help me dig the tree out of the stump? I'm Steve Christy'. Jack, Marcie, and Ned made sure the job was done.
'And I thought we'd won't be working', Ned complained.

Alice Hardy opened the cabin door.
She had red hair, hazel eyes, and average height. She wore a plaid shirt, flared tan brown jeans, a black belt, red socks, and shoes on her feet. At twenty-one, she was the Assistant Camp Counsellor; she was also the ex-girlfriend of Steve Christy. Her artwork was back in California; her eyes gleamed in the hot weather.
'Hi, I'm Alice'.
'Jack, Ned, and Marcie'.
'Steve, Brenda is painting the cabins...and is near the archery range'.260Please respect copyright.PENANA8EjQsGK8CF
'No, I want Brenda to paint', Steve said.
Whatever was going on, Jack didn't like it.
'Come on, let's go to the cabins', Alice said.

Once they were settled, Jack opened the Generator Room door.260Please respect copyright.PENANAGo0g2YJYjt
He turned the light on, and after three minutes, the power was on.
Spiders spread across his hands.
'Yuck!'.
They headed to the lake.

Ned flailed in the water.
'Help me! Help me!'.
Jack jumped in the deep end.
He performed CPR.
Ned coughed up water out of his lungs.
He sighed, as he wanted to kiss her.
He was left disappointed.
***
After lunch, Alice saw Steve.
'You draw well?', he asked her.
'I only wish I had the time', Alice answered.
'What's the matter?', Steve asked her.
'I have some stuff I need to sort out back in California. My parents disapprove of my artistic flair', Alice answered.
They banged nails into the cabin doors.
'Is it me?', Steve asked her.
'No', Alice answered.
He saw the romantic pictures.
'We...'.260Please respect copyright.PENANAFe8L7OW2ET
'We did last night'.
'Look, please stay the week. If, by Friday, you don't like it here, I'll pay for the bus trip myself', Steve said.
'Fine, I'll stay', Alice reluctantly said.
'Thank you, Alice', Steve smiled.
He waved at the campers, and told them not to do any drugs, make out, and do something to irritate Sheriff Earl Tierney.
They feigned interest in their bad behavior, as he reached town. It was a long afternoon at Camp Crystal Lake.
***
Crystal Lake Police Officer Jon Dorf, 32, was at the camp. His sunglasses gleamed in the sunlight; his leather jacket kept him warm. No, he was hot. He looked at the campers as if they were people who were used to being arrested for a crime. 'What are you all doing here?', he asked Brenda.
'We're volunteers, Officer. Can we help you?', Brenda asked him.
'Looking for someone. Name of Crazy Ralph', Officer Dorf answered. 260Please respect copyright.PENANANsJVRuEH3S
'There's no one that's crazy out here, Officer', Ned said. He was dressed as a Native American Indian from an old 1950's western with John Wayne.
'Can it, Tonto', Officer Dorf barked.
'Hey, I'm dumb as they come', Ned said.
'Is he dangerous?', Alice asked him. 260Please respect copyright.PENANAYJwJFnCssN
'When he gets The Call, he gets drinking. And he spouts the Lord's Gospel. And I have to drag his ass into the cells until he's sober. And I hate to do that job'. Jack looked at his motorcycle.
'Hey, nice bike'.
'What are you smoking, boy? Weed, doing cocaine...'.
'No, man. Drugs are bad', Jack lied.
On the radio Karen James, the radio operator, said: 'Officer Dorf. Sheriff Earl Tierney wants you back at the Station. Over'.'
'This is Officer Dorf. I'm at Camp Crystal Lake. Crazy Ralph is not here. Over'. He added: 'Don't want to keep the Sheriff waiting. I won't have any weirdness out here'. And he rode away in a dusty storm, as the campers laughed.
***
Alice saw Bill.
'Do you think we'd last all summer?', Bill asked her.
'I don't think we'd last all week', Alice answered.
And they smiled, as Alice kissed him.
***
Alice cleaned cabin 4.
As she did so, she saw a brown snake.260Please respect copyright.PENANAL2YCoysSFc
'Bill!'.
Bill, and the other campers, saw the creature.
'I'll get rid of it', he said.
He grabbed it, and threw it into the dark woods.
The danger was over.
'At least we know what's for dinner'.
'Marcie! Marcie! We are not having snake; we are having steak with mushroom sauce, and vegetables', Alice said.
And she grinned.
***
Alice saw the pantry door open.
Ned, and Marcie, saw the stranger.260Please respect copyright.PENANAkjswfpmB3m
'Who are you?', Alice asked him. 260Please respect copyright.PENANAwuUwc9BhJ4
'I'm a messenger of God. You're doomed if you stay here...doomed. It's got a death curse', Crazy Ralph answered. He walked towards the door, and opened it. Then he got on his favorite bike, and uttered: 'You're all doomed!!!'. 260Please respect copyright.PENANAhBNvsioMYL
'I think we just met Ralph', Ned said.260Please respect copyright.PENANA5AV4OaUvUI
'Great! That's all we need', Alice sighed.260Please respect copyright.PENANAOTHduD54GJ
She closed the door...and decided to secure the campground.260Please respect copyright.PENANAEdZf2VwbCx

'You could've killed me!', Brenda said.260Please respect copyright.PENANASgZ2RRJbQ6
And Ned whooped and hollered...and disappeared towards the edge of the cold, scary, lake.260Please respect copyright.PENANAk8HJfTPR4g

'Why does Ned do the silly stuff, Alice?', Brenda asked her.260Please respect copyright.PENANA4AAQJyfdA5
'It shows you how much he loves you', Alice answered.260Please respect copyright.PENANA8acc5sQmNJ
'Really'.260Please respect copyright.PENANAFZyzat69HX
'Yes, really', Alice said.260Please respect copyright.PENANACHxeotsVnV
And they washed the dishes.
***
Ned saw Jack and Marcie.
They were kissing, and hugging.
Suddenly he saw a mysterious figure in cabin 6.
The weather was changing.
A storm was brewing.
His right shoe hit the steps.
'Hello. Can I help you?', he asked the stranger.
He went inside.
The knife came towards him...and there was only the darkness. The killer dragged the body onto the bunk, and thunder boomed outside.
***
Jack saw the weather.
'Sometimes I have a dream in which the rain falls downwards, and becomes blood...and washes into little rivers', Marcie said.
'It's only a dream. Hey, this is not a dream. Looks like it's going to storm like a sun o' a gun...let's go!', Jack said. And they ran to cabin 3, as Alice, Bill, and Brenda, were in the Loungeroom. Bill was singing folk songs, and the evening had arrived at Camp Crystal Lake.
