This was like Armageddon.
A war between worlds. But this is no Biblical Prophecy. This is caused by mankind. Mankind's unwilling tendency to never stand down.
"Fire! Fire, goddamnit!" I yelled, as I watched the flying beasts approach from out lookout tower.218Please respect copyright.PENANANl5eFLnw5W
The rain was hitting us like a slap in the face. They were all young men. I was the only seasoned guy there. All of our seasoned men died. 218Please respect copyright.PENANAOVLPr2P8L3
The sights of war was like a punch to their young, naïve minds.
"I'm trying!" yelled another young boy. He was in charge of the canons. I watched him struggle. I also watched our archers drop to the floor like rocks, others tumbling, trying to aim with their shaking hands and bloody fingers.
I watched the flying beasts, which were birds with a lion's head, spitting fire like hail. They were sent by the Magi, sorcerers who are trained in all kinds of evil witchcraft. Us, the Knights of the Holy Cross, were like fleas to these devils. 218Please respect copyright.PENANAbjgSqD4oUb
I repositioned my helmet, then flipped my head toward the young boy. He struggled to pick up the cannonballs, as it was slipping from the rain.
I swore.
I made my way down from the lookout tower, sliding down the ladder. I jumped down to the floor, flung my helmet off, which was annoying as hell, and swiftly picked up the ball and loaded it into the canon, cranked it, and it fired, knocking down about 50 or so flying beasts. 218Please respect copyright.PENANAymytdrw3Lq
"Carry it from the bottom, not from the sides," I yelled, trying to get the point across. It was so hard to hear anything, from the rattling of armor and mail, and the clashing of swords to fend off these otherworldly beasts.
While us humans were struggling on the towers and battlefields, the Magi were standing, well, I think a more appropriate word would be floating, in the far back, constantly sending in the beasts. If I could just get to them, I could end this war.
The young boy screamed as a flying beast came dangerously close, snapping at his head. I pulled out my sword and slashed its head, but it just regrew like a lizards' tail. It now had its attention towards me, snapping towards me. It wanted my head. I was officially stupid for taking it off.
I was slashing constantly-and it constantly regrew-hoping that I would find a weak spot.
It grabbed my foot, biting me with its malicious teeth. I screamed in pain, upside down, seeing the stone floor below me get further away as it lifted me up, like a dog with a chew toy.
This is it. I'm dead for sure. 218Please respect copyright.PENANAJzOFN3DHW9
The beast let go of me, dropping me back down to the fortress. My head hit the floor. I looked at it and saw an arrow stuck in its eye. It was bleeding an odd color of purple, as it slowly died and dropped from a height of 50 feet.218Please respect copyright.PENANA5Ecy2uCNAn
A soldier let out their hand. I used it and got back up to my feet. I thanked them, in the best way I could. 218Please respect copyright.PENANACxz4is8iyl
I saw long, black hair flow from her helmet. All she gave me was a nod, and quickly repositioned her arrow to hit another beast, moving further down the walls of the fortress. I watched her with awe. Maybe I wasn't as seasoned as I thought.
"What are you doing?" I yelled back to the young boy, who was also watching her with awe. "Keep firing! Go!"
He nodded, and reloaded the canon and cranked it.
I looked down at a dead archer, the bow still clutched in his frail hands.
Not a bad idea, I thought. 218Please respect copyright.PENANAfzoKMVKbSZ
I quickly scooped up all of the fallen bows and handed them to the swordsmen.
"Sir? What are we doing with this?" they would ask,
"Shoot them at the eye," I commanded.
"But I don't-"
"You'll figure it out."
And lo, with the help of our new archers, we successfully warded off the beasts. I never knew who the mystery girl was, because she disappeared after killing the sorcerers. I still think of her to this day.
