Dear Atalanta
I love you.
I miss you.
You deserved to be here.
You really did.
Your flitting eyes and awkward laughs and exhasperated signs and careless , excited screams.
Your unbridled exhaustion and soft daydreaming and raging sense of purpose and the waterfall of words you'd douse me with.
Your sense of wonder, your surreal imagination, the way you dreamed up worlds that followed not even the idea of a rule, the way you ran through the tall grass.
The way you stuttered when meeting someone new.
The way you misremembered song lyrics.
The way you were.
You were uncapturable.
I like remembering you happy.
Remembering you both breaks me and heals me in ways I can't quite explain. It hurts. It hurts more than showering in broken glass. But it gives me a sense of purpose. A will to keep going. Not for myself. But in hopes that I can one day reclaim this planet for us. That I can be the one that pulls the pillars out from under their roof.
Because if they're gone, this won't ever happen again.
