Monroe:
Since meeting and talking with Rachael’s birth dad, everything that followed such as Trevor starting to court this twig-like girl named Emily and Snow calling off our marriage arrangement seemed tiny in comparison. Snow, Gale, and I once we got back to camp from the cave decided to not tell Rachael about her father. Now about two months since camp, Gale has gathered me and Snow together to finally go tell Rachael about her dad. With a flick of his wrist, Gale uses magic to stop the carriage and he and Snow climb out first in front of Rachael’s castle.
“Gale! Snow!” I frown able to sense Rachael running as fast as her legs can carry her to Snow and Gale. I wait a moment before stepping out, allowing Rachael to have a private moment with them. Remembering the conversation with Gale about Rachael’s powerful magical abilities to subconsciously change the environment to fit her emotions, I prepared my body for a quick change in weather. Rachael did not disappoint. The temperature dropped and the light from the sun darkened a bit, however, it wasn’t as bad as I supposed it would get. I look down from the carriage to see Rachael anxiously drop her arms from around Snow and Gale.
“Oh. I didn’t know you were coming to visit too.”
Rachael:
“Miss.” Miss Mary is almost out of breath standing in front of me holding a letter. “Miss you have mail.”
“Thank you.” I take the soft white envelope from her cold hands. I watch as always as Miss Mary fades walking away from me. According to what little Gale has told about since my disappearing act during camp, both Snow and Monroe know a bit about us magical creatures so there is no point in her hiding her abilities as a spirit. I quickly tear open the letter to read what was so important for her to have me read when I had barely spent a minute with my friends and Monroe from camp. Inside there are four words.
Go to the garden
Snow:
As Rachael leads us all to a gigantic garden, I kept an eye on Monroe. Since Rachael’s dad told us that Monroe is the only full bred human of our camp group, he has barely uttered a word to me. It’s quite unnerving, especially for him to suddenly go mute when before camp, he would weekly come over to my castle to lecture me about my childish behavior. It’s been about eight weeks since I last saw him and not even my most recent prank of having all of my personal guards’ underwear fly from my castle’s flagpoles has made him stop by. 610Please respect copyright.PENANAN17u3CagyI
By the time I caught up with Rachael and Monroe in what appears to be the middle of the garden, Rachael is seated on a glowing rusty metal bench with Monroe standing a few feet away, staring down at her.
“Rachael,” I started saying but stopped when I saw her eyes soften as Gale came up behind me. It’s no use saying anything to her when her eyes get all soft like that when Gale is around. She is so in love with him, yet according to Rachael’s Dad, Monroe is the one for her.
Gale:
A soon as I caught up with everybody else, my eyes fell on Rachael sitting down on a glowing metal bench. Its glow I can tell comes from Rachael herself who is supplying it with just enough magic to keep it from breaking under her weight, yet not too much magic that the bench materials can’t handle. Obliviously she has learned well to moderate the amount of magic she can use, but she is still too powerful for her magic to be concealed.
“How do you explain your magical glow,” I ask her avoiding her gaze. After spending the majority of my childhood with her, I know when she knows that I am keeping a secret from her.
“It’s the glow of a young woman who wants to know what is troubling you, dear Gale,” She responds with her voice dripping with sweetness as she twirls a pink rose around her fingers from a nearby bush. I sigh in defeat already knowing that I couldn’t win against her.
“We talked to your dad.” Rachael’s fingers pause. “In person.” Rachael places the rose in her long black hair and stands up dusting herself off.
“When was this?”
“In the cave at camp.”
Monroe:
“Rachael!” Isabella suddenly appears with the other seven girls that had helped us save Rachael from the witch’s cave. They enter from the opposite side of where Rachael lead us from.
“Oh hello, Isabella did yo…”
“There’s no time for small talk. You have to choose your husband in a few months.”
“Wasn’t that already decided in the cave? Supposably true love’s kiss to wake the sleeping beauty?” Grumpy throws her hand up in the air in annoyance.
“Why does everyone assume it is as cliched as true love’s kiss? Doc tells them,” Grumpy yells. Doc nods, turning to the four of us with an explanation.
“In the book of fate, it states that no marriage arrangements will be made for Rachael until she becomes of the marriage age, which is sixteen and only on her 16th birthday will she and her three closest friends - Gale, Snow, and Monroe - will the prophecy be fulfilled.” Doc reads out a massive ancient book that suddenly appeared in her hands. I glance at Gale and Snow to see them with matching shocked expressions
“The prophecy included all of us too?” Isabella nods in response to Snow’s question.
“So in six months when I turn sixteen then I’ll be in another marriage arrangement?” I didn’t need to feel her emotions to know she asked with exasperation and despair in her heart. Grumpy rolled her eyes before turning back to Doc to answer.
“Yes, but this time your partner will be whoever wins in a fight to the death battle between Gale and Monroe.” 610Please respect copyright.PENANAUrS4f58QM2
