Chris strode confidently along the moonlit forest path. he gazed around at the trees expectantly, knowing exactly where he was going, but still looking out for his winged friends. he soon came to a large stump. a long-forgotten tree knocked down by a ravaged. he squeezed the top half of his body through a well scratched and weathered whole in the side. inside the rotting stump were his friends, two creatures of about house cat size, with large butterfly-like wings, and bone-like plating running down their spines. their large green eyes stared at him for a moment then they began crawling over him in excitement, these were phantoms. the large moon showed through the top of the fallen tree illuminating what Chris now realized to be a nest, with two hatchling phantoms clambering about blindly. the two parents noticed his gaze and the larger of the two came to the nest looking at the babies. the parent looked up at Chris and nodded to him, signifying its trust. as gently and as gingerly as he could, he picked up one of the tender wriggling hatchlings, letting it squirm in his palms. eventually, it stopped wriggling gathering its mind. it looked up at him with a curious expression. Chris lowered his head to the tiny creature and it touched his nose with its own, sniffing his curious scent. after a moment of wriggling its snout the child sneezed and fell backward onto his fingers. Chris then let it down back into the nest of assorted leaves, twigs feathers, and other small objects.
Chris smiled and looked at the two-parent phantoms. "congratulations, guys." he issued a long-winded yawn. "Alright, I'm heading to bed, have a good night." he patted the creatures on their small smooth heads. he managed to squeeze out of the hole and stumble his way sleepily toward his home, a small cottage on the top of a hill. he laid down in his bed and fell asleep almost immediately.
