The Mate Bond
I push Lucifer away, but he pulls me close to him again, holding me tightly as I cry. Once my tears dry up, I take a deep breath, just realizing the smell of my mate. Its sandalwood and cedar. I step back still upset with him.
“Why wasn’t I good enough the way I was? Why’d you have to kill them?” I breath out.
“You were too perfect for me. I didn’t deserve you the way you were. I had to do something. I love you, always have, but I couldn’t bear the thought of being with someone as perfect as you. Now, you are right for me.” Lucifer says softly.
“I wasn’t perfect. I was trained to be an assassin by your demons. I didn’t even know what they were until you killed…” He kisses me, cutting me off.
I push his shoulders but fail to move him. He just pulls me into the kiss. It’s so wrong that it feels right. I should be fighting him, but I can’t. I’m so hurt by what he’s done, and the fact that Kyle left without so much as a goodbye.
“Come with me to my castle. I will have a room for you immediately.” Lucifer states.
“What am I going to do now? I’ve been so focused on revenge, but I can’t fight the mate bond. I can’t fight you.” I say.
“We are bound to be together, but I don’t like you referring to it as mates. We aren’t animals. We are angels. Albeit fallen, but still angels. Let’s call it a lover's bond.”
“It’s a mate bond. There are no other words for it. We may not be animals, but we are still mates. We just haven’t made it official yet.”
“Yet?” he sounds hopeful.
“Easy tiger. I’m not just going to give into you. I’m still fighting with my emotions. It’s going to take a while before I’m able to let go of the past. Not only that but my boyfriend just left me. So, forgive me.”
“Of course. I will wait for you, but come to my castle with me, let me show you that I’m more than a killer.”
“But you ARE a killer. Angel of death.”
“That may be true, but you haven’t unlocked your full potential. You don’t know what you are capable of.”
“Oh, and I suppose you do?”
“Come to my castle. I’d like you to see where you will be living from now on.”
“I guess I have nowhere else to go, Do I?”
He leads me down the side of the smaller mountain we were on, and to the gothic-looking castle. Its architecture is absolutely gorgeous. Gargoyles sit on the four corners of each of the 6 towers. It has a wrought iron gate like you’d see in a scary movie. Or a haunting. I guess it fits with him being the angel of death. I sigh, taking in the beauty of what’s normally a place in a classic horror movie.
He stops abruptly and I crash into him. Sparks ignite throughout my body at the mere touch. I glare at him. He smiles mischievously. That smile alone will kill me some day and make it impossible to stay mad at him. My heart caves in his gloriousness. I never thought anyone could have this kind of effect on me. I realize I want nothing more than him, right here, right now, but of course, I resist. I’m not going to let him win that easily.
“What? Why’d we stop?” I ask impatiently.
“Well, honey, I think we need to go over a few things before we enter the grand ball room on the other side of this door.” He points to the wrought iron gate.
“Rules? We aren’t 18 anymore.”
“Chill out, it’s not like you’ll be in the dungeon. You will have a grand room right next to mine. That aside, we need to come to an agreement. No. More. Killing. Demons.” He emphasizes each of the last words.
“Ugh, I’m not going to kill your little pets.” I snap.
“Hey! They have feelings too. As you should know since you’ve dated one.”
“I didn’t even know he was a demon, but he’s dead now, isn’t he?”
“He was one of the best assassins out there and you managed to kill him without even blinking. I was thoroughly impressed.”
“You would be.” I pull my hand from his and cross my arms.
“If you want me to treat you like an adult, then start acting like one.”
“I’m as much of an ADULT as you.”
“You are indeed an adult in looks but not in actions, except for when you were killing my so-called pets.”
“You feed them, shelter them, take care of them, and set rules for them, heh, I bet you even pet them when they are good, don’t you? Whether they are pets or kids? Choose one.”
“What the hell is wrong with you? They are… well… you know… not humans but…”
“Creatures. Just like pets.”
“And yet you slept with a creature… a werewolf nonetheless.”
“He was never in wolf form. That’s just plain disgusting.”
“But that’s what he is, weather he looked it or not.”
“I bet you’ve slept with some of your ‘demons’, so what’s the difference? Oh, that’s right they are still creatures even if they don’t look it.”
“You’ve slept with one too, and then killed him once you found out he was a demon.”
“I killed him because he gave me no choice in the matter.”
“There’s always a choice, sweetheart.”
“So, you’re saying you chose to kill my pack, that it wasn’t out of necessity? Because I swear you said you had to do it earlier. To get me to become a fallen? Remember?”
“I… that was different.”
“Not really.”
“Fine, I admit defeat… this time.”
I beam with joy, “Good, because I’m sure there will be more arguments.”
He smiles and shakes his head before leaning in and kissing me. I allow it because he is my mate. Whether or not I like it. I sigh after he breaks the kiss. He leads me inside his home, and up three flights of stairs to a grand bedroom.
“This will be your quarters until you finally submit and become mine. It will happen. It’s just a matter of time. I’m a very patient person, angel, thing.” He stumbles over the words.
“You can say person, we can look human if we want to, I have had to hide my angel blood in my hunt for demons and you. Now, on the other hand, I can show my wings freely.” I say.
“You do know that you can’t change them back to white once you’ve become a fallen. They will remain black no matter how nice and peaceful you are.”
“I’m okay with that. I’ve grown rather fond of my blackened wings. They are my favorite color.”
“I want you so bad right now, it’s evident.” He presses himself against me.
“No.” I respond, “Not going to happen tonight or any night in the near future. I’m still pissed.”
He groans. “This is torture. We are, as you say, Mates. We are supposed to…”
“No.”
“Please?”
“No. This conversation is over. I will see you tomorrow.” I enter the room and find the California king bed surrounded by bed posts almost reaching the ceiling and a canopy over them. I smile at the beauty, before crawling in bed and sleeping.
----
It’s been three months since moving in with Lucifer. He’s not completely heartless. I’m just stubborn. Though he’s grown on me, even though he did such horrible things, but am I really any different?
“Allissa, please let me in.” I hear a knock on the door.
I sigh and answer the door knowing who it is, “Yes Lucifer?”
“You are looking beautiful this morning.”
“It's not going to work.”
“Oh, come on, it’s been three months already. You’re still angry with me?”
“Oh, please, I’m surprised you aren’t mad at me for all the demons I’ve slain.”
“I can make more of them any time I want. I can't replace your family, but there is a way to bring them back, I hope.”
“Since when?”
“Well, I have a gift for you. It’s something special, but I can’t use it… however, you might be able to.”
“You better not be lying to me. I don’t want to get my hopes up if it doesn’t work.”
“You control light, even in your darkened state. What I mean is you are a healer. You should be able to bring them back.”
“If I could bring them back I would have already.”
“You don’t have this.” He shows me a staff with a huge diamond at the top of it. It looks to be made of red stained oak.
“That thing is huge. What is it?”
“It's called the Staff of Rebirth. Only healers can use it. Since I’m not a healer, I cannot use it. Each angel is born with their own abilities. Some heal others can grow plants and trees, and still, some can control demons. Even further are some that control elements. Some control dragons, even. There is so many things' angels are capable of.”
“Tell me more about this staff?” I point to it.
“It has the ability to strengthen healing abilities and bring back the dead. Only problem is, they won't remember you. The user can’t be known by the ones brought back. I’m sorry, but even if you bring your family back, they won't know who you are. You can still visit as a traveling healer, but they can’t know you brought them back.”
“Even if they don’t know me, I’d like them to be able to live full lives. How will I know if it works?”
“You will know.”
I ponder the thought of bringing them back before I grab the staff from Lucifer. Its heavy but nothing I can’t handle holding. I look over every small detail. Its highly decorated.
“Thank you.”
