Fawn stretched her legs once they docked Moss’ sloop. She silently admired the large rock formation known as the Methri Jyep. The dark stone stood alone in the horizon towering over the ocean surface. Upon the dark stone, houses and buildings were carved out. The rock itself branched off in two directions right at the ocean surface. A large metal bridge connected the two. Fawn squinted and could see the tiny forms of androids crossing the bridge.
Her favorite part was the cave entrance. The stone formations that dropped low at the entrance begged her to enter. Bright reflective light danced on the shadows from inside the cave in a beautiful dance. The water turned a beautiful green hue as the water grew shallow near the rocky entry. The cave’s opening lead to the long corridor that sunk deep below the ocean to the rock bed at the bottom. The Jyep’s center of operations was built into the cave below the ocean floor.
If only they would let her get her hands onto the data base and get into the coding, she could understand how the systems run the world’s currents and managed the tides. In every ocean, the coordinating Jyep maintained the currents. The androids made sure that the fleets do not cross paths too often and sends trading fleets around on faster streams. It was a delicate balance and the androids kept the entire world running. They had to monitor the ice bergs in the cold regions, as well as keep the ice shelves from growing too large and throwing off the currents course. If one current were to curve at the wrong angle along an extended ice shelf, the rest of the current would not connect into the other oceans correctly.
Fawn watched BLIM lazily speak to another android that approached them as they docked. She smiled brightly. This was the type of work he had been made to do. Her father took him under his wing when BLIM was fresh out of the underwater factories. New androids are still pretty rare. TORT was the first new droid they had seen in recent years.810Please respect copyright.PENANApMlQlLqoPF
BLIM was also her ultimate experiment. From a young age she became attached to BLIM and fiddling with his systems to make him more human and more advanced. She did not like the coldness some of the droid gave off. BLIM, now an abomination or a miracle to some of his kind, was too different from any other android. Every android in the oceans knew of BLIM.810Please respect copyright.PENANAyrzTHpcowU
“Hello Fallow Fawn, you are right on schedule,” the android said nodding his head in her direction. The droid was tall and had dark skin. His brown eyes followed Fawn’s every move. Fawn winked at the android and walked towards the cave with her arms twisted behind her back. Her mind was already beginning to form a plan of how to escape this particular droid. He always had a bad habit to stick to her like glue.
“Going to follow me around today Prototype BLIM?” Fawn said with a smile.
“I am not authorized to give you permission into the system Fallow,” the droid said in a monotone voice. “Please, call me 37.”
“So you are the 37th revision on BLIM’s original operating system?” TORT asked curious.
“Yes,” 37 said as he led them into the cave’s opening.
“More precisely, he is the 37th attempt to recreate what BLIM is now today. I think they are on-“ Fawn let her voice trail off trying to calculate.
“We are on the 229th revision. ” 37 responded for her.
“Ah, 229 failed attempts to recreate the operating system BLIM runs on,” Fawn said with a proud smile.
“Barely runs on,” BLIM mumbled from behind her. Fawn paused for a second letting his stride catch up to her and stomped on his foot before continuing. Wincing BLIM glared at her but kept his mouth shut.
The path downward was wet. Fawn took in a deep breath closing her eyes. The damp smell of the cave and metallic tinge on her nose left her feeling giddy. Fawn couldn’t contain her excitement as she heard the familiar buzz of computers the deeper they descended down the stone staircase.
Bright light erupted from the bottom of the stairs and Fawn bit her lip. The clicking of buttons and the turning of gears filled her ears. Fawn had submitted multiple applications to the Methri Jyep, but every time she was denied access.
Often Fawn remembered that her father would hide away her creations. As a child, this confused her but now she understood. He tried to protect her talent. He brought home BLIM and she began tinkering. Fawn was pretty sure if the Jyep could get their hands on her brain they would, but for now they wanted to keep her away. Her father told her once that her rare talents would strike fear in Jyeps.
“Do you think it was rude to not invite Moss to join us?” TORT asked.
“He is a big boy,” Fawn said glancing at the android. “He will find something to keep himself busy.”
“It feels wrong to leave him behind,” TORT said glancing back up the stairs. Fawn shrugged her shoulders and stepped into the florescent lite room.
Androids sat at computer panels checking levels and made adjustments. To her right a large screen was mounted to the rock wall. Lite up was an entire map of the planet. Each ocean shone a different color. Fawn gazed at it watching the Methri currents swirl on the screen. Lowering her gaze she saw a dotted line indicating the end of Methri and start of the Ippo Ocean. Farther south a greyed out area showed where the ice shelves currently lined.
“They are not advancing as fast this year,” she commented as she mentally calculated the difference from last year’s map she was able to glance at. 37 glanced up from his tablet and nodded his head satisfied.
“We sent the warm current south this year a bit early to keep the ice under better control,” he commented. Fawn knew better then to ask what system and formulas they used to come to the conclusion that sending warmer water south would help. “Come Fallow, we will continue.”
“I would like to wonder around for a bit after I deliver the documents,” Fawn said with a cheesy smile.810Please respect copyright.PENANAfOf7LEruJn
“37, it is best to just go along with what she wants. It is much worse when you don’t agree on some level,” BLIM said with warning. Fawn mentally congratulated BLIM for being her backup.810Please respect copyright.PENANAhggb9co6MQ
37 gave her a skeptic look but said, “We will see.” He turned on his heel and lead them towards the main office.810Please respect copyright.PENANA3fVhX1K9vU
