William Sketoe, Sr was a Methodist minister from the south alabama town of newton. His lynching on december 3 1864, gave birth to another one of the most famous ghost stories in Alabama. Local stories state that he was hanged (Yes this is the right word) on trumped-up charges of desertion from the confederate army. While other sources that I have talked to state that he was aiding pro-Union renegades in the area. Whatever the reason for his murder, heres how it went down. A shallow hole was dug underneath his feet to accommodate his large frame. Which led to the stories of the hole won’t stay filled. According to people who live in the area say the whole no matter how many times it's been filled it won’t stay filled. Sketoe’s tale became a staple in southern folklore after the author Kathryn Tucker Windham wrote her book “13 Alabama ghost and jeffrey” (It's a really good book actually) The site of his hanging has remained a tourist attraction for decades, Even though the hole was actually filled in during a flood in the area (damn I know right I wanted to go stand in it.) Today the site of his lynching is beneath Alabama Highway 134 over thw choctawhatchee river (I’ve been swimming underneath that bridge. Nearly got bit by a cottonmouth. Other than that it's fun, plus the water is surprisingly clean.) There is a monument of him that was built nearby. Sketoe’s lynching created quite a comotion in Newton, especially as the locals began to notice that the hole dug to facilitate his hanging never seemed to disappear. It retained its original dimensions which are about thirty inches wide by 8 inches deep. Even filled with trash debris, locals always returned and sometimes within hours it would be empty. Campers who have filled the hole with dirt then pitched the tent over it. Awaken to find it swept clean. All of this has turned Sketoe’s story into a legend. One local resident insists on a completely natural explanation. Mary Fleming who has lived in Dale county after the war and saw the hole many times, asserted that Sketoe’s friends, including one named Wash Reynolds, Secretly kept it clean while insisting that it was supernatural forces. Of course Reynolds denied this, insisting that he didn’t know what was going on with the hole anymore than anyone else did. In about 1979 a new highway bridge was constructed over the site of his hanging, his hole found itself beneath the new span. In 1990, after flooding necessitated importation of rip rap to strengthen the river bank. The cavity was covered with a ton of rock. Although it hole isn’t visible itself, the site is still very popular. In 2006, the sketoe family members joined Newton officials in dedicating a monument to the ancestor near the site of his death. Yeah that's all I got I’m gonna debunk it and say it's not real cause there isn’t enough evidence to say that it's real.524Please respect copyright.PENANA38h7lf1Qjs
