The protagonist of the story is Richard Evelyn Byrd, an Air Force pilot who encountered a fog while flying a military aircraft over Antarctica. He was led into a room to meet an elderly man, who informed him that this place was called "AGHARTA," a subterranean world, and that its technological level was nearly a thousand years ahead of surface-dwelling humanity.
