Wednesday, November 25, 1994 - Morning
I came to the common room carrying a message I had written during the night.
Harry met me there. “Good morning, Luna. I hope you are well today.”
I handed the message to Harry. “I’m fine Harry. This is for you.”
Harry looked at me and smiled.
“This is from Hermes. He said that the God of the Underworld, you know, Hades, he wants these taken care of as soon as possible.” I carefully studied Harry’s reaction. Harry took the message from me. The look he gave me told me one thing. He was frightened.
Harry read the message.

Soul Anchors
A Soul Anchor, also known as a Soul Shard or a Horcrux, is an enchanted object which contains a fragment of a person’s soul. Once created, a Soul Anchor will prevent a dead soul from entering the Underworld. This soul can regain a presence in the living realm. The magic used to create a Soul Anchor is among the darkest known.
Riddle created six soul anchors. These Soul Anchors have kept the shade of Riddle’s soul in the living realm. Riddle is preparing to regain a corporeal form.
They must all be destroyed to finally send Riddle to meet Hades.
Soul Anchors to be destroyed and how to do it.
- Riddle’s Diary – destroyed.
- The Gaunt Ring – Gaunt shack, Little Hangleton.
- Helga Hufflepuff’s Cup – Lestrange family vault, Gringotts.
- Slytherin’s Locket - Black family home, 12 Grimmauld Place, Islington, London.
- Rowena Ravenclaw’s Diadem – Come and Go Room, Hogwarts.
- Nagini, Riddles familiar, a snake – Old Riddle mansion, Little Hangleton.
Recommended actions:
- Request Li family curse breakers and soldiers to get the Gaunt Ring.
- Inform the goblins that a forbidden artefact, Hufflepuff’s Cup, is hidden in the Lestrange vault. They will want it to be gone. Arrange with Lord Greengrass to collect Hufflepuff’s Cup from the goblins.
- Send a house-elf to get Slytherin’s Locket. Kreacher, the Black house-elf is desperate to be rid of it. Harry can command it to open with parseltongue.
- A Hogwarts house-elf can get Rowena Ravenclaw’s Diadem from the Come and Go Room.
- Arrange with Lord Greengrass to have the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets rendered down. Keep some venom to deal with the soul anchors.
- Bring the soul anchors to The Chamber of Secrets and destroy them with basilisk venom. One drop on each will do the job.
- Nagini is a witch who was cursed to transform permanently into a snake. A charm to break the original curse will be given to you by Nagini’s own family. Nagini will transform back to her human form. The soul anchor can then be destroyed.
- Try to time the horcrux destruction and dealing with Nagini to be as close together as possible. Riddle may be able to sense when a Horcrux is destroyed. If he knows you are killing Horcruces, he may try to create more.
The next issue is the fragment of Tom Riddle’s soul embedded in Harry’s scar. This is not a soul anchor as the ritual to create a soul anchor was not performed when Riddle murdered Lily Potter. Riddle’s soul was torn by the act of murder, and the unprepared soul fragment was embedded in Harry when Riddle attempted to cast a killing curse at him.
Harry must ask the Unspeakables to perform the necromancy ritual to remove this fragment. Harry will then be free of the connection to Riddle.
Hermes
Herald of the Gods of Olympus
It was such a long message. I had never had such a long message before. Harry read the parchment. He was not as frightened, but he looked so sick that I thought he would throw up.
I told him, “Harry, you don’t have to do all this yourself. You have allies who would jump at the chance to help you. Give this to Professor Dawes.”
At last, Harry looked relieved. “Thanks Luna, I did think that I had to do all this myself. When you reminded me of my allies, I realised that I have be reminded all the time that the Gods told me that my allies would help with the hard jobs.”
Harry and I waited for Professor Dawes to return to Merlin Tower after breakfast. We followed the professor through the portrait. Harry called to the professor. “Professor! May I give you a copy of this. It is a message from the Gods that Luna heard in the night.”
Professor Dawes looked at me, she always took every opportunity to study our faces when something significant was happening. I wonder if she can see nargles too.
When she had read the message, Professor Dawes looked at me again. Her face was different, she was not studying my face anymore, she had a look of wonder.
“I will get advice from Lord Greengrass about these jobs. I will also ask the Unspeakables, they might want to see you quickly Harry. If this is what I think it is, you might need time away from school.”
Professor Dawes paused and stared at Harry’s scar. Harry looked embarrassed and turned away.
“I’m sorry, Harry. I was thinking about your scar. I wish Dumbledore had made more of an effort to investigate it. However, he is a political wizard, and not a trained healer. A healer would have done something about it. You had better go to your classes. Luna, can you come to see me when you have a free period?” Professor Dawes had become more business-like. It was as though she was embarrassed at being caught staring at Harry’s scar.
I said, “Yes Professor. I have the two periods after lunch free.”
Harry spoke again, “Professor, my godfather Sirius, he has returned to Britain and is living at Grimmauld Place. He could collect that Soul Anchor for us.”
Professor Dawes did not look certain about that. “Let’s speak to Lord Greengrass about that Harry. We have to be careful about who we get involved in this matter.”
After lunch I arrived at Professor Dawes’ office. Previous meetings had been about how I was adjusting to being a younger house member. Most of the others were a year older than me and in any school that was a significant age gap.
“Luna, I want to talk to you about Harry.” Professor Dawes then seemed to wait for me to comment.
“Harry is sad most of the time. He is attacked by wrackspurts which take advantage of his moods to get him even more fuzzy thoughts.”
“I want you to think about things that are needed to make Harry happy. I have a list of things here which might make Harry happier than he is now. I want you to give me your opinion about them. There are some things on the list which Harry already has, but there are too many that he does not have. I want to know if there is any way to make any of the missing things happen for Harry.”
She gave a parchment with these lists on it.
Does he have what he needs to survive?
- Does he have proper food and drink?
- Does he get shelter from rain, wind, cold or heat?
- Does he get continuous sleep without nightmares?
- Is his clothing better than cast off rags?
Is he safe in his everyday life?
- Are there real threats to him personally?
- Does he have a permanent place at his school?
- Does he have access to what he needs every day?
- Does he have good health?
- Does he and his family have a place to call their own?
Does he feel love and belonging?
- Does he have friends?
- Is he accustomed to being physically touched by anyone?
- Does he have contact with his family?
- Does he feel a sense of connection?
Does he feel esteem?
- Does he get respect?
- Does he have self-esteem?
- What status does he have?
- What recognition does he have?
- Does he feel that he has strength?
- Does he feel that he has freedom?
I looked at the lists. Some I could answer, but only for now. Things could quickly change to take all of Harry’s happy list away.
Professor Dawes spoke again. “There is another thing which Harry needs to have. That is a desire to become the most that he can be. Does he think like that now?”
I slowly shook my head. “He doesn’t think anything of himself at all.”
“Please write one short essay to answer all the questions. The questions don’t follow any order, a no for one question can be followed by a yes for the next. It will be confidential, of course. Thankyou Luna.” Professor Dawes stood and walked to the door.
I went with her, but I had one answer to give now.
“I can answer one question now. Some nights Hermes wakes me up and asks me to get up and go to the common room. It is always silent there. I sit and wait. Then I can just hear Harry crying out in the night.”
“Once I went to his room. The door was not locked. I went in. Harry was yelling out in his sleep. He was calling out things like ‘Please don’t hit me!’ and then ‘No! Don’t kill me!’. Then he stopped calling and stayed asleep.”
“I went back to my room. While I was walking, I heard Harry cry out again.”
Professor Dawes was looking sick.
